In this episode of Lessons Learned, Randy Newberg reflects on a limited-entry Montana elk hunt from this past season. He mostly solo hunted this tag and also self filmed it. Not having success, Randy is going to cover some of the mistakes he made as he looks back on the hunt.
First, Randy explains how he should have allocated more time and prioritized this limited-entry tag that he drew. Beyond that, he realizes now he should have prepared for all conditions. During the hunt, the winds were absolutely howling making hunting more difficult. With such high winds, elk hang out in a totally different area than Randy planned to hunt.
He saw elk and specifically bulls on public land. So it wasn't all negative. But with these tips, hopefully you can learn from Randy's mistakes and apply these lessons to your next hunt to help cut the learning curve

You learn the most in life from mistakes you make along the way... I really appreciate your content. Especially stuff like this. The amount of information is priceless because I learn so much from it. Everyone shows awesome hunts. But never show nor talk about the hunts that sucked. And must importantly what made it suck and the mistake made that made it suck more. Thank you for sharing. Not just the good hunts. But also the bad ones. It’s highly appreciated.

#4 - hunt for your own reasons. Thanks for being REAL and upfront. It's refreshing. Agree - go with your gut. I know you have an audience to deliver for, but being yourself & letting the chips fall will create better personal experience (thus, content). Who cares what others think.

Thank you so much for sharing. I think I learnt more watching your videos than actually hunting, even if I have a "Notes to myself" that I try to update every time I go hunting or fishing, just to remember what works and what doesn't.

Randy, you champion the little guy in the hunting world. The little guy (often) just hopes to SEE elk !! And, to have an opportunity to shoot a legal one? OMG !!! Fill the freezer with great table fare. As for your willingness to kick yourself on video afterwards... again, that's championing the little guy in the hunting world. Your honesty of the outcome is most appreciated, and builds one's respect for the work you do (and your crew).

Thank you Randy for being honest about what you did wrong and owning up to it. That is such a rear thing these days. Everyone looks for somebody or something to blame. Just remember when you're getting your tail kicked that means you are still out front God's Blessings on you & your team

Thanks Randy. Sorry you didn't tag out but I appreciate how you learn and teach us how to learn from our/your mistakes. Also gives me hope when an experienced hunter like you doesn't always fill his tag either.

I’m glad to see that you had at least one positive. Because I think we can always find something that worked for us in our hunts and other life experiences. In your case I think you’re selling yourself short. I think you have a couple more positives. Did you bring enough warm clothes? Yes that would be a positive. We certainly can learn from our mistakes. But we can also gain confidence from our positives. And I think you had many more positives. You just didn’t think long enough. I really do enjoy these lessons learned or what I will call debriefing sessions. Thanks for sharing.

Love these lessons learned. Even though there were 3 negatives for most of the hunt, you still almost had an opportunity. With a little bit it less mental gymnastics, you could have had a shot on the 5 point. Goes to show that even a hard hunt with things working against you, you still might have an opportunity and be successful, if you are ready for it.

Great info Randy. I agree sometimes we get in too big of a hurry and don't give ourselves enough time like we should. I also am not considered a trophy Hunter we all like to get the biggest one that's out there but like I've been told you can't eat the horns , so in other words take what you can get because sometimes you don't get another chance.

I always enjoy these segments as I have stated multiple times in previous lessons learned as well as answers for your survey email 📧. I learn a ton from these whether a bull or buck hits the dirt or not. You could be the Bob Ross of hunting diagrams if you had an Afro and drew some Happy Trees 🌲 showing elk sanctuary. Lol 😂 Mental gymnastics gets to the best of us. I have watched you for 5 years and have never thought of you as a “trophy” hunter, but someone who loves to tell a story and who takes advantage of the opportunity that presents itself. I probably could put more whitetail bucks down if I wouldn’t hold out for at least a 3x3 and shoot forkies and spikes that I knew were spikes and not does. Speaking of deer 🦌 you could have mentioned a positive of you passing on a nice buck, because you were focused on the one species that gave you the most meat 🥩 Two last things, I believe that you and the crew could fill more tags 🏷 by doing what you said and doing less hunts, but having more days in a row for each hunt. Preferably 10 days if possible. Secondly that checkerboarding of private and public and corner crossing laws have me nervous when looking at lower point hunts (0-4) for pronghorn and possibly mule deer in Wyoming and eastern Montana. Figuring out access and such without getting a fine has me doing a different kind of mental gymnastics. Any help with that would be appreciated. Thanks for sharing.

An accomplished DIY hunter like you, and you worry about people judging your game taking decisions? Take it from someone who has had to eat more than his share of those expensive Wyoming nonresident deer and antelope tags for one reason or another; "Fuggitaboutit!" You get used to it after awhile. Plus, there's always next season coming. With it comes one more chance to drop another load of cash, only eleven months away! [Laffin'😄]
