Solo in Algeria (One of the World's Hardest Visas): Appreciating Algiers' Architecture

First part in a ~7 part series of my travels across the Maghreb (Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco). Algiers is a gorgeous city, European in architecture but worlds apart from Europe in finance, culture, and atmosphere. Citizens gather reading newspapers over $0.25 coffees in the morning amidst the haze in the distance. Even though I was here one day, hopefully you'll find as much to appreciate about this capital as I did.

Can somebody explain to these people ?! This question keeps on coming as if the visa is for second class people only .It's hard just because you're not used to be treated as you treat others ...An Algerian citizen has to meet the same conditions that you were required to in order to get your country's visa...fair enough.
@Forastersoc
@Forastersoc 13 дней назад
It's perfectly fair, I think it's an equal response to bad visa regimes for Algerian citizens. I would hope for more free movement in the world. I think it's fair to point out, as Algeria gets far less tourism than Morocco and Tunisia, which is due to choices that Algeria has made which is fair but is not emblematic of Algeria's wonderful people and history.

Algeria applies a reciprocity principle for visas, meaning that countries requiring visas from Algerians will also face the same requirement for their citizens. Additionally, it can be challenging for Algerians to obtain visas from those countries. It’s important to remember that every person in the world has dignity and the right to defend it. In Algeria, you are not considered a tourist but a guest, and you will be treated as such. There is no scamming of tourists in Algeria. Welcome to Algeria

Algeria makes visas difficult for visitors from countries that make visas difficult for visitors from Algeria and makes visas easy for countries that make visas easy for their citizens. Reciprocity, no one is better than another. Sovereignty is shown in these matters.

Last thing. The Algerians do not talk about a war of independence. They talk about liberation. They were invaded by force. They never asked to be part of France so it is a war of liberation and a revolutionary war, not a war of liberation. Logic. They only freed themselves to take back their country. And yes, the history of Algeria is complex but fascinating when you take the time to seriously study its history. And believe me the history of Algeria is incredible. You can't imagine, they were a great Berber civilization. Hannibal, the famous hero and warrior who made Rome tremble, he was Algerian. A Berber born in Algeria at the time. Other Algerian Berber characters influenced Roman civilization. Many artists, authors and personalities were born in Algeria. The candle was born in Algeria. Couscous too. and many things you don't imagine. Even Abraham Lincoln received a great Algerian hero, Emir Abdelkader, after saving more than 10,000 Western Christians from Syria by sheltering them in his own home. Following his great act of kindness, he was received by American President Abraham Lincoln who presented him with two COLT revolvers. Lincoln declared a famous phrase in tribute to the Algerian hero and the Algerian people. I'll let you look for this famous statement. Following this, the two peoples signed an agreement of friendship and fraternity. This is why the USA supported Algeria's liberation struggle against the French colonists. Even JFK had received the first President of Algeria, Ahmed Ben Bella, at the White House. Many media videos from the time are on RU-vid. Just search. It is also the land of revolutionaries, land against colonialism and racism... The only country in the world that helped Nelson Mandela was Algeria, which had the apartheid regime sanctioned at the UN , which also helped all of black Africa to free itself from colonialism. Even Che Guevara stayed in Algeria, he was fascinated by these Algerian heroes who knew how to defeat a great power thanks to the art of Algerian guerrilla warfare. The U.S. Black Panthers were refugees in Algeria, etcetera... It is the only country in the world to have won the war against terrorism and without aid. No other country has achieved this. In short, the multi-millennial Algerian history is fascinating but unfortunately little known by the current generation.

And regarding Visas, I will explain to you. Algeria has a simple and logical policy for issuing visas. This country applies the principle called "the principle of reciprocity". This means that Algeria requires the same documents from nationals of countries that have not signed a movement agreement between their countries. Algeria issues the same number of visas as it gives to Algerian nationals wishing to visit other countries. It’s give and take. It's simple to understand. It is a sovereign country. There are countries which do not need a visa to go to Algeria because they have signed a decree of free movement and trade. So, it is from your politicians that you must demand cancellation agreements or visa facilities between your country and Algeria. However, over the past 2 years, Algeria has greatly simplified obtaining visas. Indeed, since 2022, Algeria has made a reform to give visas to tourists who choose to visit the Algerian Deep South. In the Sahara. You have to go through an approved tourism agency, and the agency takes care of all the administrative side. And the visa will be issued to you on arrival directly at the airport. After your stay in the great Algerian south, you are free to travel to the rest of the country. Algeria created this visa to promote tourism in the great South of Algeria, the Sahara, where the most beautiful vestiges and historical sites are located. For example, the famous cave paintings dating from prehistory (Neolithic) which is the largest open-air museum in the world, the troglodyte dwellings, the Roman ruins (Algeria is the 2nd country after Italy to have the most large ruins and Roman sites). So, here's a good tip to get the visa without difficulty. You must go through an approved agency and choose to visit the great south of Algeria, with Touareg guides, for 1 week. And after this week, which will change your life forever because the experience is so extraordinary, you can then freely visit the rest of the country. Good tip to know. Find out about this simplified visa, it is very recent. In addition, Algeria has announced its ambition to reach 11 million tourists per year by 2030. Tourism in Algeria is increasing enormously. In 2024 there were 2.2 million tourists, an increase multiplied by 2. It is the country which records the greatest increase in tourists in the world. Within the next 4 years, Algeria will likely sign agreements with many countries to facilitate visa and possibly cancel it

Before this colonial buildings there was a city like Morocco and Tunisia built in 9th century called Al casbah, it was completely destroyed by France , the European like building are proof of what france destroyed , our identity and our heritage , they are proof of how much our ancestors suffered because of France , I personally think they’re beautiful of course but there’s a lot of pain behind their history Also everything you’ve seen is not ottoman it’s purely Algerian ( history student here ) only the mosque is ottoman but the ruins are from the Roman period and Phoenician , and the casbah was built by native amazigh algerian berbers in the 9th century waaaay before the coming of ottomans which took place in the 15 century

L'Afrique du nord n'était pas essentiellement chrétienne avant l'arrivée des arabes, les villes l'étaient en grande partie mais pour le reste c'était des païens ou des religions a base phénicienne et punique.

Repeating the idea, but I just don't love filming in public when I don't know a place well. My later videos are much more comfortable when I got a hang of recording and felt more comfortable!
