Really enjoyed this one. You mentioned "I see rays when crabbing and crabs when hunting rays." Suggestion: Marry the two hunting implements...spear net. Prongs on one end, net on other end.
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 8 лет назад
Thanks fly! Hmmmm interesting suggestion.... I'd be worried about spearing myself when chasing a crab down and I stumble over something... I'm sure there would be tons of people saying how dangerous it is and I would probably have to agree. THanks for the suggestion though!

You are sooooo hysterical and entertaining!! Man I needed that! Especially knowing I have to get up soon and go to work...haha. I'm so afraid of rolling my kayak....some of them make it look so easy on videos and I'm like WHUUT?? No way! Thanks for doing what you're doing Trip and sharing it with the rest of us:) You are my FAV!!!

Its all about experience. No one learns to paddle like that over night! My father had me kayaking (well canoeing back then) since I could walk, and I'm still learning and I'm in my early 50s. Every place you paddle is slightly different. Sometimes you take waves in the face all day and other days its like floating on glass. Its all about learning and experiencing a couple of good failures because they teach the most!

Haha! So happy to hear that you enjoyed that Rachelle! It's definitely tougher than it looks... I imagine some training and it wouldn't be as hard though, surely right? You are very welcome! Sorry I didn't reply to your comment earlier... Missed it somehow..... THANKS A TON!!!!

possible tip which i dont know if it interests you at all but (in my opinion) if you want to grow your channel a little bit more you can upload each day of the trip as a separate video. more videos and frequency of uploading= more views and subscribers :)
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 8 лет назад
Ya know, I've thought about that but what I've found is that the 1st video of a "series" gets a lot of views while the next videos never get the same. Plus some people aren't as RU-vid savy and may not be able to easily navigate to the next one. Also I think RU-vid has changed their ranking algorithm to where "watch time" is more important as well as "audience retention". My longer videos excel pretty well in both of those areas. I appreciate the tip though!

Several suggestions Trip. You can always install a flush mount rod holder to the back of ya and drag a baited line while paddling. " trolling". Practice your wet re entries before your rolls. Watching and doing it, is totally different.As the saying goes...... practice makes perfect. You're right, when in deeper water and don't know what to do, you're screwed! Carry a little hand held umbrella with ya to catch the wind in the direction that you're going,saves ya from paddling. For Gods sake invest in some dance lessons will ya??!! Lmao! GREAT VIDEO!!! and thx for another funny adventure! Cheers!
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 8 лет назад
Hey Keith, glad you enjoyed the video! Dance lessons? I took ballroom dance in college! And aerobic dance to! lol Seriously I did (apparently didn't learn much) I've thought about the rod holder..... I need to just go ahead and do that. I've actually done wet re entries before and didn't have an issue, of course that was with the yak empty vs half full of water. I've got a good buddy who has offered to teach me to roll. Handheld umbrella, lol great tip! Thanks for watching and the great comment Keith!
@LarryTalbot_1313
@LarryTalbot_1313 8 лет назад
If you install a flush mount rod holder, beware of brands. They are supposed to be sealed, but some take on water. That might no be a big deal on the average day, but if you are in chop or bad weather, you'd be surprised how much water can accumulate and how quickly. If you don't bail it, in a couple of bad weather hours, it will be like pushing a tank uphill!

Two questions, one, why don't you bring the wife and kids with you on these adventures? And two, why don't you wear you PFD when you are so far out on the ocean or lake? I think it would be wonderful to see a few videos of you with at least the kids, teaching them to love kayaking and camping at an early age.. I always wished my dad would have taken us out more on adventures. And please don't say it's because the kids are girls. We girls love the time with dad doing things he loves. It builds a great bond. The kids will have great memories doing things with dad. The things you can reminisce and laugh about later in life. My granddaughter is three months old and I can't wait to get her out on the kayak. Here in Western NY we have tons of lakes and rivers to explore. My 72 year old mother Is saving her birthday money to buy her first kayak! Her birthday was May 9, and she got cash towards her boat. She is so excited to get started on adventures of her own. My daughter and I got kayaks last year and got mom out on Canadice lake and she was hooked!
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 5 лет назад
The wife and kids aren't ready yet and it would be much much harder to film. I don't wear the PFD for various reasons..... but when I feel the need to, I will certainly wear it. We do go on many day trips as a family but it's hard to be dad and film at the same time. Hope you and the family enjoy some time Out There!

If you add a paddle bag to your safety equipment. It's a bag you inflate on the end of you paddle that acts like a pontoon to assist in climbing back into your kayak. Atwood makes one that you can get for less than $20. I don't go on the water without mine.

I've tried the waterproof smart watch, wasn't for me. The other one is/was a Times Ironman, just a cheapo from Walmart.... Had it for a couple years but the strap broke the other day. I bought a G-Shock 7900 off Ebay for $45. There are so many watches out there I couldn't decide on one... I got this one because it has moon phases on it as well as the tides which can be pretty handy. I think it's going to be a good one. I like it so far!

if you don't like to cast in an out over an over just troll with a lure behind you it works really well an with the trips you make on your yak you'll catch a lot of fish. I troll with my kayak the other day on the river for the first time an caught a 5 pound striped bass withen 20 minutes an I'm not the best Fisher man either but trolling works lol

@LarryTalbot_1313
@LarryTalbot_1313 8 лет назад
I have to agree, this does work. Especially if you are running out of daylight and haven't had time to catch a meal yet. ll you really need is some line and a lure. The water will drag your line out and do all the work for you as you paddle along, you'll be trolling. If you want to catch a bunch of fish on a long run, bring a stringer alone and just put the fish on the stringer when you stop for a water break or whatever. The only thing you have to make sure of is you have the right lure, for the right water that you are in. But beware, you might also catch a shark!

It is good to practice rescue techniques! The more you know now, the more you will have when it matters. For the way you get back in there is a thing called a paddle float to stop the boat from flipping when you get in from the side. For your rolls you need the paddle to be outward way more, the kayak and paddle make a T at the end of the roll but you do not even need to do a sweep roll to learn rolling. Check out this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v-riOC8poAs.html The roll he does at 35 seconds is what I talk about, he starts out with the paddle and kayak being a T. Just stick that paddle out there and pull and it will roll, you still need to lean back when you are coming up though!
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 8 лет назад
Definitely good! lol I needed the practice apparently.... That's exactly right! I like that saying the more you know now..... I've seen and heard about paddle floats but never got one. I figured it was just to much trouble but I may need to look into one. If you kept trying and couldn't get back in then it would certainly be worth it. Thanks for the video, checking it out now! Seems simpler than what I was attempting, thanks for sharing!

I really liked you section on flipping your kayak and I loved the fact that you showed how hard it is to get back into a sea / touring kayak. Now take into account how much energy you expended while trying to get back in and think about how much more would have been needed in water over your head and say 60 degrees or cooler. You need a paddle float they are cheap and turn your paddle into an outrigger allowing you to get in on the first try when in water over your head. Every year someone is killed in my area (Chesapeake Bay) because they run out of energy in deep water and just can't get back into their boat, then they drown or die from exposure. Way too many people, me included when I started out, have no idea just how dangerous kayaking can be. They think no motor, cheap boat, they sell them at Wal-Mart that makes them kids stuff right? I can tell you I live in an area that has more waterways than roadways so everyone owns some sort of boat and more people are killed in kayaks and small non powered boats than larger rec (skiing / fishing) power boats each year round my way. Trip think about this, your kayak is MUCH harder to get back into when loaded down with camping gear, in water over your head with a little bit of wave action rolling. Buy a paddle float and practice getting back in when loaded in deep ruff water (with a friend as a safety observer) I want to see you keep making videos I really like them your one of my fav You Tubers and This was is great video to show people how hard kayak re-entry can be. It's not if your going to flip your kayak, it's when. Cause if you kayak enough you will flip at a time and place that is less than ideal at some point or another. I was with a friend who is an excellent swimmer but new to kayaking who almost drowned last summer cause he had a small bag between his knees. He turned around to say something to me and his yak just went over, no apparent reason. the bag made a wedge between his legs and the inside cockpit of the boat. He was locked in like a wedge. The harder he tried to get out the more locked in he became. finally after a long time it seemed (I was paddling back to him like crazy to assist) he relaxed and unlodged the bag allowing him to swim out. If he had not been a former combat Marine and current Police Officer I don't know if he would have been able to calm himself down enough and rethink his issue and get out just before blacking out like he did. He said he was seconds from drowning when he got out. I'm not trying to be the safety police just trying to put some food for thought out there.
@TripSmith

I'm going to add a paddle float to my Amazon list right now :0 Good thoughts!!!!!! You are right it's certainly "when". So glad to hear you enjoy my videos and that I'm one of your favorites! Thanks for the kind words bud. Turning turtle can be scary if you struggle getting out. I've done it some off camera on other trips and there were times that were harder to exit than others. I could only imagine being stuck. Calm clear thinking is absolutely key though for sure. Thanks for the GREAT COMMENT!

@TripSmith
@TripSmith 6 лет назад
I parked as close as they allow you to. They do have several campsites that I passed while paddling out to the one I stayed at. I chose to stay at the furthest one for the most isolation. The closest on is more like 2 miles or something. Give the park a call and they will fill you in ;) Have fun Out There!!!!

where did you go set up camp, was it with a camp site or did you just randomly found a private spot? I am looking at going camping here and wanted the gulf view.
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 7 лет назад
Hey Alexis! The campsites at the park are designated sites and most are only accessible via kayak. I had to stop by the park office and reserve the spot for a few bucks and it was mine for the 2 nights. As for a gulf view, I don't believe there are any spots on the gulf side.... They do have an RV campground that is pretty close to the gulf but that's probably not what you are looking for. The sound side is really pretty nice to look at though one of my favorites. The park rangers are pretty helpful and are happy to chat with you on the phone about it (that's how you reserve your campsite in advanced anyhow)

Just looked on Amazon and there are several break down pole spears on there. Not really sure about making one.... Probably doable.

I love that you just filmed all you crude attempts at the roll and also deep water re-entry, hahaha.....my buddy who is a pro gave me a free lesson and I did my first roll...go somewhere and do "eskimo rolls" first as practice haha...for me the trick was once upside down, you extend your body as far as you can away from the boat and to the surface as far as you can before attempting the roll..or "the catch" phase...if you are extended and up close to the surface, then you "catch" the water with your paddle and do the hip snap...the hardest part for me is NOT trying to lead out with my torso....your body and your head leave last...this feel very unnatural to me..but if you do it this way, you just kinda pop right up...good luck! (ps, I am "Ellery" on facebook). better skirt may help as well...mine was like 120 bucks if I remember

Also, it is good you practiced reentries on you boat. Those long sea kayaks are great for speed and cargo, but deep water self rescues are tough. You are a young guy. I'm getting old, so that is why I bought a Santa Cruz Kayaks Raptor SOT. Not as fast as your boat, but real stable, built for surf and easier for old guys like me to make a reentry.,

I've taken a buddy of mine once in the "Kayaking and Crabbing" video in Panama City Beach. I would love to take a subscriber one day. I'm actually in the planning stages of a large group trip that's an open invitation to any subscriber wanting to go! I would like to take one or two people along eventually, but I have found that it is more difficult to film with others along. Filming takes a lot of time and preparation... I'd be worried about taking away the "experience" from other paddlers if I put the burden of filming on them as well.

What brand/model is that GPS you are using? It looks like Garmin, but there are many too variations to guess. I looked at Garmins and thought about $350 was way too steep for a what I use them for about about $300 past my budget. I ended up getting a Bushnell Fish Tracker, which does all the Time, date, speed, distance, temp and route tracking at about $50. Its a child's toy compared to the Garmins, but I did get lost once and it got me back home, so it does work.
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 8 лет назад
Yea, it's a Garmin. One I've had for probably 6-8 years. I think is a Map CSX or something like that... I really don't use it for what all it can do and I imagine the Bushnell would do everything I would need it to. I bought it originally for sailing.... Hadn't used it for many years before this video lol
@LarryTalbot_1313
@LarryTalbot_1313 8 лет назад
It looks nice!!! The Bushnell I have does not have any maps and you can't put in coordinates to take you to a place, so its very limited. I would think it would be a great starter for a kid to learn on. For me, it always comes down to price and it was the cheapest I could find, that would still let me download my tracks and stuff, yet still have the most important features.

@TripSmith
@TripSmith 8 лет назад
Hehe..... Yep. Get out there Joe, it's waiting for you! Correct, no fresh water at camp. I can do with about 80oz per day without much issue. Depends also on how much liquid is in your foods (soups vs dehydrated meals) I generally come home with quite a bit of extra water.

Great trip, Trip! Rolling can be a pain... Just remember the happy Gilmore quote, "it's all in the hips" but it's fun to watch it fail. I'm waiting for my wife and I's new kayaks to come in then we are going to paddle out and camp on Cumberland island, sc. Wanted to get a boat with dry hatches before attempting that else the waves would soak our gear. I was curious where we can get a SnS shirt like you had; looked on Amazon store and didn't see it. We appreciate your videos; fun to watch and nice encouragement to leave the couch.
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 8 лет назад
Appreciate that Justin. Ha, yea I remember that line, maybe I should try to get into my happy place as well? New yaks in the mail? What a great feeling lol What did the two of you go for? The bonuses of having your gear secure in a dry compartment. I wouldn't want to have to digging in dry bags every time I wanted something. That's a big reason I like the Sit Insides although some SOT's have them as well. The shirts? I guess I should make myself a little more clear - They are at S&S.com at the S&S Gear page, here ya go - sailingandsuch.com/shop/ I appreciate you both watching and glad to hear they were good motivation to get out there!

. . . . a small ridgid rounded dinner knife goes a long way when picking crabs.. and a ... plate ;) leg joints split open deep at interior two tips of shell = fat not always... split open smaller legs length wise depends on how the catch goes and how... hungry ... maybe a small steamer pot and some "old bay seasoning" poured on live crabs and 20 minutes later ... some vegetable soup with actual veggies with low low! salt or refrain and corn peas, etc. add some crab and a pinch of old bay seasoning great vid what a fine camp site! "punishment meal"... lol.. classic. how about kayak sailing ? . . . .

Awesome video! Nice try rolling ;) Dont think you can eskimo roll with a nylon skirt. Neoprene only, tighter fit the better. Or is that neoprene? Hard to tell from video! For deep water re-entry; Hop up on the kayak stomach-down, facing the rear, flat, with your body lengthwise on the kayak. Once your laying on the kayak on your stomach with your head facing the stern, put your feet in the cockpit and then roll your body so that your on your rear and not your stomach.
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 8 лет назад
Thanks! I was wondering if the skirt could have something to do with it being difficult... It's nylon. Ah, I see. I'll have to give that a try next time. Thanks for the tip!
@UnexpectedInquisition
@UnexpectedInquisition 8 лет назад
Same issue with my kayak; there is no neoprene skirt for the old town vapor 12, due to the size of the cockpit, so I cant Eskimo roll - ever. Its still nice to keep the water out of the cockpit, however. Your kayak has a small enough cockpit, luckily - there are neoprene skirts made to fit www.sealsskirts.com/index.php Love the videos as always. Good stuff.
