The black dog has been by my side most my life, sometimes next to me, sometimes running ahead in the distance, but he was always there. Watching your videos inspired me to go for a walk. Baby steps to start with, do to having an physical disability. Just short walks along the beach early in the mornings, finding a quiet spot at the most easterly point in the UK to sit and meditate and watch the sunrise. After a couple of weeks I realised the little black dog was, for the first time in 30yrs, behind me. Still near, but behind me and I a new sense of calm within me. This gave the confidence to go out of my comfort zone and hike part of the Angles Way, followed by a trip to Robin Hood's Bay where I hiked from Scarborough to the Bay, then from the Bay to Whitby and back again. Upon returning home I was dog free!. Walking, along with meditation has given me a new outlook on life and a sense of freedom. My physical disability and mental health issues used to leave me feeling full of despair with no way out of the darkness, but thanks to you I've found a way of banishing the negative thoughts, leaving darkness and an ability to see the positives and light by achieving things I thought I couldn't physically do or mentally handle. Thanks so much Hazy for the inspirational videos and for being such an open, honest, down to earth & encouraging human.

Interesting. That's why I have always loved the outdoors. For me, depression was like going out for a walk, on, say, featureless Dartmoor, on a nice sunny morning, but I didn't bring any gear with me, cos I thought it would be fine. Then it starts to cloud over, then I realise I have strayed off the path, but I haven't got a compass or a map. I have my old mobile fone with me, but no matter, the battery is very low, in any case, there's no reception around here. So I walk towards a distant Tor, before the mist closes in, but the mist surrounds me first. I can only see the uneven boggy ground around me for about 10 yards in all directions, yet I think I can see the faint outline of a black dog, just out of calling distance... Maybe he could guide me to safety, but as soon as I move towards him, he disappears into the mist. Its getting cold, starting to spit with rain, and I don't have a jacket, so I must find some sort of cover. Its unlikely anyone will come looking for me, as I didn't tell anyone where I was going... And now its getting dark.... So you see how mountaineering fits in with my (our?) psychology, why I always go prepared, and I've been to some magnificent wild places, met wonderful people, all of which made me forget depression. I still take the black dog for a walk now & again, but its on a lead with a muzzle now. 👍

For future reference, it's a good idea to unbuckle your backpack waist strap and loosen the shoulder cinch straps a bit when crossing a dangerous river or creek, because if you do get swept down stream you can get yourself free from the pack instead of having that extra weight pulling you down in the water.

@lidewijvos It's just a known survival tip. I didn't create it or anything. But I assume that most people wouldn't even attempt to cross a fast flowing river with a bergen. I'd imagine that most who would try it would most likely have a smaller bag.

Nail on the head Hazey, this vid got me out of bed - i didn't achieve anything but I still got up. Trouble is often times people unafflicted don't realise that just having a shower, brushing your teeth and having a shave, clean kit on is an accomplishment in itself for people like us. Many a time I've gotten to my car and not been able to turn the ignition and decided no, tomorrow and gone back to the four walls because it feels safer there, but then you're cemented with your thoughts. We're lucky to have you mate cause your wisdom shows us we can get back out even when that heavy old bastard is sitting on our shoulders. Hope your noggin is in a better space and thank you for keeping us going ❤

35:55 Hi, I am a white water kayak coach and wild camper and I echo what others have said. You were pretty silly to film while crossing and you were lucky when you did fall. 1) Be very careful in water flowing that fast when its over calf height. 2) Stop bloody filming 3) face upstream legs placed well apart 4) Use a walking pole or sturdy stick to form a tripod, with the stick upstream and lean on it, this gives you firm base to move across the river 5) shuffle your way across, you dont want a foot slipping into a hole and getting a foot entrapment, then you really will be in trouble 6) Undo the bloody rucksack, never cross water like that with a fullly loaded rucksack fastened up, it will kill you if you fall. Apart from that looks like you had a great time. Sometimes useful to take spare socks, thermals so at least the base layer starts dry.

You have to love the North of England. I used to camp in the Lake District for days at a time in the 70s when I lived in Wigan and we wore the wet clothes till they dried, but it wasn't too bad coz they were wool, but they were bloody itchy wool for some reason and the tents were that heavy we had to split the load. One guy had the inner and pegs and the other bloke had the fly and poles. Miserable conditions but great memories. Thank you for a great trip!

It wasn't a chance to encounter meeting you today at Derwent Dam! It was almost spiritual pal, because I have been having a real bad time this last 10 month I won't bore you with the details but the conversation Mrs Mole and myself had was about how you said if Life's kicking your arse, kick your own and I was telling her about your video and Life is too short and then who bloody walks around the corner, but you and Fern and the Doggo! Gave me a shock to start with because it was surreal, but it gave me a real boost and the photographs Fern took you can see in my face that for those few minutes (didn't want to start waffling on and left you to your walk) but that's the first genuine smile I have had for sometime! Good to meet you both and the dog and I hope you enjoyed your walk! Thanks for making my day. Urban Angler ❤

Love it up there. I’ve had a life changing night in Warnscale Bothy on a 3 nighter, best nights sleep this insomniac has ever had. This is such a moving vlog - I watched it yesterday and it hasn't left me for a moment. We don't know whether your situation has come about from a particular event/episode/relationship, or whether you are just prone to being accompanied by that black dog from time to time in your life, but sharing this video shows so much about your grit and mettle. Like you, I'm a firm believer in giving yourself a kick up the arse: help starts at home. But equally, that's not where it ends, and if a self-administered kick doesn't crack it, then that's not 'another failure' to add to the load, it just means it's time to speak to someone else in confidence. Maybe a friend; maybe a professional. Because if you can go through that environment and make this video, you can sure as hell chat whatever this is through with someone. All the very best!

You’ve made my worst hike ever seem like a stroll through the park, big respect to you Haze, absolutely love your videos and I’m so glad you left the black dog up there in the fog. It seems that fall in the river was a signal the black dog was gone, the last of the bad luck and a weight lifted ❤

That was a beast of a camp mate!! I had a similar soggy bogfoot one on Saturday up the brecons. That dry tent, dry clothes moment is a special feeling innit! (But savage in the morning) Congrats on getting to the start line. It’s so hard sometimes, even though we know how good it is for us. On the ups and downs of the noodle - I got one of those cold plunges and have been doing it every morning since January. It’s levelled me out so much mate. It’s obviously not the same as a good wild swim, but the mental and physical ritual of getting into that damn cold everyday I swear has transformed my brain chemistry. Big up Hazey 💚 Looking forward to the tent review ⛺️

I was feeling pretty worn out and low lately, I just took a week off and went canyoning and hiking in Maderia. Such a beautiful island, was exactly what I.needed.. feeling rejuvenated now.. There's a hike there where you can cross the whole island.. who should give it ago when you get a chance... All the best mate, and thanks for the videos

Thanks so much for that vid. I loved it and totally relate to the "black dog", especially right now. I've been finding it hard to motivate myself to do things that are right for me and to get out into the mountains too. Finally today, I pushed myself to do 25km even though it was raining and I feel much better for it.

Mate I so feel your pain. Been in this situation at least once in my home town of Wellington, New Zealand (hint: it rains and blows a LOT year round). Still watching your video. Nothing sucks more than waking up in middle of night to realise your warm lovely home is in fact home to a stream/pond. Ugh! Thank God for Back Country Huts!!!

Love it. Been there, my tent in puddle was at Angle Tarn by Bowfell so I understand the concept of the groundsheet/capes acting like a dingy. Nothing like wet , cold , misery to cheer you up and clear the head. Best of luck and happy trails.

When you have to cross swollen streams, hiking poles (used with proper technique) really come into their own! Can be a literal life-saver...

So refreshing to see a young man with guts and drive in this woke society we live in today, all power to your elbow young man keep going i look forward to your next adventure.

Go away with your nonsense culture war rhetoric the younger generations are just as resilient and tough as you think your own was they just live in a very different world from the one you grew up in. They are much better at filtering out and not falling into a herd like mentality that insists on labelling and denigrating others as well.

M8, I don't normally comment. Good water crossing technique facing water flow 👍. For added safety unfasten your pack and only have one strap over the shoulder. Helps to break free from pack if required. Keep those boots steaming 🥾
