There has been no water for salmon so I try my luck fishing for sea trout on the river Coquet in Northumberland. To challenge my own fears I fish on well into the night to experience what fishing in complete darkness is like.

i always fish a muddler on the dropper with an alexandria or teal blue and silver on the point for sea trout. use bigger sizes depending on water height. Another favorite is a hitched sunray. I always find putting pace on the flies at night works best as well.

Its a beautiful river. I drove over from the North Tyne yesterday where there was a large Kielder reservoir release; I've never fished the Coquet before but in about 15 minutes I had a salmon- only around 6lb and coloured but a fish nonetheless; sun came through and that was that but saw a fine roebuck bounding away; magical morning !

Sounds like you've had a fine excursion. I am just back from two days fishing around Rothbury. I have seen so many running fish but didn't have a single touch. Tonight as darkness was falling I watched one pool literally fill up with sea trout which were splashing and jostling around all over the surface. It was an incredible sight but could I hell get one of them to take! The only interest was from a really good fish which rolled over the top of a muddler ripped over the surface.

My experience of fishing for Sea Trout back in Ireland many years ago involved fishing all night. What helped me catch fish was knowing the night time lies and fishing them in day light to get used to the flow and pull of the fly line. In very low conditions I fished Teal & Blue flies size 12 even sometimes size 14. I do miss the Sea Trout fishing but make up for it with some excellent Trout fishing here in AUS and NZ. Tight Line!

Tight lines to you too Norman. Some sound advice there, glad you have plenty of good fishing over there in the southern hemisphere. I fancy a trip to your homeland myself next year.

Enjoyed your video….River Coquet looks a nice river. Have done some ‘Night Time Sea Trout Fishing’ in the past. It is a completely different experience and not for the faint hearted. Keep fishing……….you will catch!!!!!! Just be careful being on your own……..try to stick to an area of rage river you know… Do not walk about in the dark……that’s when accidents happen…. Good luck…👍👍👍👍

Thanks Harry, the Coquet is a nice, intimate river. I was going to start fishing the Tyne but I walked the banks of some of the beats I have club access to and found it a bit intimidating for a novice. The Coquet has been a good river to learn on. I fished a lot of days in sping for trout and came across some pools I'd like to fish at night. There is one in particular up near the source in the Cheviot Hills that I must get up and fish again this year. The season goes so fast though and there is so much good fishing to be had once you start looking for it that it's hard to fit it all in! I will be on the Tyne for a couple of days as I've been invited by a friend of my Dad to fish his water. He only fishes when conditions are right and hasn't cast a line yet this season as there has been no water at all. I'll take my camera along when I do get the call because it might be eventful. The season before last he caught 60 fish from the Tyne. I will heed your advice regarding safety.

@@abakerslife Sounds to me as if you are are adopting a sensible approach to fish rivers especially at night. I reside in The Midlands but I am a member of Hexham AA......I totally agree re finding the Tyne intimidating. There are parts I would not fish.....I do not like wading! Re fishing with your Dad's friend.....Brilliant!! You should learn from him re the river and the fishing.. Good luck....keep the video's coming....very enjoyable!!👍👍👍

Nothing worse than a otter getting the blood pumping then seen it. I have a video of all the hype then a otter sticking it's head out the water. Your welcome to join me on the Irthing one night as am not brave enough for the dark on it on my own. Far to much history on in the area of B.A.A water. It feels like loads of folk are watching you even in daylight lol

Funnily enough I've driven past the Irthing a few times recently on my way to fish the Liddel. Looks a nice little river but a graveyard for flies!

The Coquet looks flirty. My fear night fishing fairly practical... slipping and drowning!
@abakerslife
@abakerslife 2 года назад
It'd be hard to drown even if you wanted to at the moment as the water is so low. You're right though, slipping is a real risk. I've got a massive bruise on my butt to remind me to be more careful.
