If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Well.....yes.
The highly selective harvesting of native trees in Australian forests provides some of the most sustainable timber production in the world. It is far less impacting on soil erosion, waterways, native habitat and groundwater than plantation forests. It is vastly superior to the over logging of tropical forests in the third world. In this case, the forest is regrowth following logging decades ago. A part of my program is the progressive thinning of stagnant regrowth stands to create health, vigour and diversity in the next generation.
The hardwoods from Friday Creek, such as white mahogany, are amongst the strongest, most durable timbers on the market. And beautiful to boot. These trees are already supplying carpenters and artisans with the raw materials for some exquisite furniture and related high value products.
This footage can be confronting for some viewers, however, I hope it provides an appreciation of the work that goes into carefully removing timber from the surrounding forest, and the very real cost of sustainably obtained timber.
