In late July 2021 I headed up to the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina to thru-hike the 30-mile Art Loeb Trail. It was hot and muggy, but I just had to check it out. I decided to also add on a trip up to the summit of Cold Mountain via a 1.5-mile side trail near the northern terminus of the Art Loeb Trail. While it added 3 miles to my trip to make the out and back trek, I was glad I did it. This trail was really fun. The higher elevation areas around Tennent Mountain were full of blueberries. I definitely recommend camping up on the exposed ridge if you can - the view is worth it if it is not too windy.
**Maps in the beginning of this video were created with Google Earth. Google Earth is super fun to play with, so if you haven’t spent much time looking at it I highly recommend giving it a whirl.
-My Art Loeb Trail Thru-Hike Gear List: lighterpack.com/r/hbnja9
-Food Storage Options: It is required to store food in a bear canister if you camp overnight in Shining Rock Wilderness, which I did. I used this one, the BV500: amzn.to/3iGJqob.
-Art Loeb Trail Shuttles: I used Pura Vida Adventures: pvadventures.com/art-loeb-tra.... It may seem pricey, but the drive between trailheads is long. You could also reach out to the NOC (noc.com/) to get a list of area Trail Angels to see if you can arrange something at a lower price. Since the trail is 30 miles, you could also consider parking at one end and “yo-yo’ing” it (hiking to one end and then back again).

Thanks for sharing that you were so nervous about the hike. It's very understandable. Like you said, there are several factors about hiking, especially alone. I enjoy your videos a lot! I'm subscribed!

I appreciate your thoughtful comment! I almost always get nervous before a longer hike. I try to just remind myself that I have a lot of experience, I am prepared, and the rest is up to the universe. But, the reality of feelings is that they are often not rationally correlated to reality, if that makes sense. Glad you are enjoying the videos!

Another great hike video! Glad you were able to get out there and get in sync with nature again. Wonderful feeling when immersed in nature, even if it is only for an overnighter or weekend. Hope you have a Merry Christmas & Holiday season.

Cómo lidias con la depresión que genera el fin del camino?En mí mente ronda el consuelo de la vida en ermitaño durante mí retiro, pero siempre compartiendo el eufórico amor que da la naturaleza salvaje.saludos desdé México.

Post trail depression is a real thing. Hiking a long trail is a microcosm of an alternate reality where life is boiled down to the simplest of pains, the simplest of pleasures, and the very basic layer of Maslow’s Hierarchy. There is the depression or restless feelings associated with leaving that space, but there is also a new awareness that there is a reason I’m having those feelings. That second piece is the harder one to cope with. Maybe it means that modern life is all wrong, and that living more simply with the land is something I (we) will always be drawn to. If so, we really took a wrong turn as a species when we hit the agricultural revolution! Then again, maybe it means that I am just struggling with balance. Maybe I like escaping from “normal life” because I cannot find a peaceful balance. But then trail life is not in balance with normal life either. I struggled the most with this after my AT thru hike. I thought I would do everything in my “normal” life differently. It definitely changed me, but I went through that period of post trail struggle when I realized I did not yet have the means to fully change the way I lived. I focused more on trying to avoid some type of balance rather than embrace it. I struggled a lot less she. I finished my CDT thru hike. I think I came to accept that I need to work harder at finding balance. Life is very much like a long trail- there have to be good and bad days for it to ever mean anything, for me to ever feel anything. I think the biggest thing that helped me then and helps me today is gratitude. Whether I am hiking and enjoying it or hiking through rough conditions, whether I am back in normal life working a tough job or doing something I love, if I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities I have and the people around me, it is hard to be depressed. Life isn’t about finishing a trail - it’s all the experiences along the way. My own mind is both my worst enemy and my best friend because it shapes the experiences I have, not the other way around. So to a degree my experience is up to me. Easy to say, hard to do in practice (for me), but gratitude really helps me.

Glad you enjoyed it! Check out the end of the video description. There are two songs credited there, and I’m pretty sure the one you are asking about is the second one. You’ll see all the info there for it. I like a lot of piano music :-)

@@UnfetteredFootsteps Thank you! As I posted, I thought there was probably a ridiculously easy way to get that without asking. But I also wanted you to know how much I enjoyed the video. ALT is one of my big goals for the year!

@@judithratcliffe3298 no problem! Not every track has to be cited, so you wouldn’t know which one. It’s the Jeremy Blake one though. ALT is a great trail! You will love it!
