come with me to thunder bay, ontario for the weekend!
many, many, many of the beautiful places in North America (i.e. national parks, unique land formations, places with the best views) were once and still are sacred land to indigenous peoples. thunder bay has 360 degree views of Sleeping Giant, a modern provincial park, but longer a land formation sacred to indigenous communities and the subject of many long-told legends.
the reality is this space would not be accessible to me without the truth of colonization. this truth weighed very heavy on me during this trip.
i look forward to learning more about the history of colonization and taking conscious steps towards aligning my life in a way that ethically addresses and supports the reparations of colonization, racial inequality, gender inequality and climate change.
i am sharing this information with the intent of encouraging minds to reflect on living- and traveling- more ethically. give as much as you take. donate. buy local.
also- in the midst of all this thought, i happened to be in town on canada’s national day for truth and reconciliation. this day honors the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. a local radio station aired an all-day broadcast to honor this day with the purpose of “inspiring people throughout Canada to move reconciliation forward in meaningful ways.” this really well developed and informational broadcast, as well as donation resources, can be found here - downiewenjack....
