A canoe and solo wildeness camp on a picturesque Loch island in the Scottish Highlands.

Surrounded with breathtaking views I cook up a chilli over the firebox stove and get treated to an awesome sunset.

Excellent wee film, Paul. You've really capture essence of solo canoe tripping and the wilds of Scotland in its true form. Loch Maree has be one my favourite place in Scotland to paddle , although very delicate and vulnerable to abuse. Last year there was a forest fire on one of the islands due to irresponsible campers. For those who are reading this and wish to visit the islands and intend on having a fire, please use a fire box away from the forest floor and do not use dead wood from the forest - take your own wood and leave no trace. Or better still, do not have a fire, especially if you do not have skills and experience lighting fires and managing them.
@WhenNaturePauls
@WhenNaturePauls 2 года назад
Thank you Fred, well said. It's a magical place and could easily be upset without care, or simply too many visitors, I sincerely hope that never be the case. Having said that, I used dead wood from the site (a previous pot Hanger) albeit a very small amount is required for a firebox, but a gas stove would be a better choice for the local ecosystem. Thanks for watching Fred and for your comments, Paul.

@@WhenNaturePauls. Hi Paul. Can I ask you a question on your Silverbirch Broadland 15 canoe. It looks really good and I've done some research on the canoe however could you tell me if its good as a two man canoe. I think mainly it will be a soloist canoe but I'd like to use it for tandem use too. Thanks Paul.
@WhenNaturePauls
@WhenNaturePauls 2 года назад
It's acceptable for two (not heavy persons) with no kit, or one with kit. I had me, the wife, the baby and dog in it at the same time on a Loch, but it was starting to feel a little strange I thought. Anything else don't hesitate to ask. All the best, Paul.

@@WhenNaturePauls. Thanks Paul. It would only be on odd occasions with two people and only day canoeing, as my partner wouldn't do nights out. I'm 85 kg partner 65 kg with a little bit of kit should be fine. Would you suggest a kneeling thwart.
@WhenNaturePauls
@WhenNaturePauls 2 года назад
@@grahamkyzer253 I think better being a bit tight occasionally then having to paddle the 16 solo. There is also the highline to consider (just to make the decision harder 😂) When it comes to kneeling thwarts, I don't bother (I'm definitely in the minority on this one though) as I'm happier kneeling without one. Happy to answer anymore questions, but start a new comment as we are in someone else's comment and he's probably getting notifications 😂 All the best, Paul

@@johngrimmer1989 yes I have done. But personally I wouldn't use one without a tarp or some sort of shelter on standby if the weather wasn't great unless maybe it was the hooped variety (which are basically small tents). But I usually sleep on my back when on a roll mat and if it rains when in a bivvy bag you'll be on your front breathing through an opening. Also they are colder.

Oh nice 👌it certainly is a special place! never heard of the viking grave, but I heard its the only place in the UK to have an island on a Loch in one of the islands (an island in a island)! I didn't see any sea eagles on my visit unfortunately, but all the islands are protected now and stopping on them prohibited during spring and summer due to disturbance of the black throated Divers 😢 Still, be a beautiful autumn or winter camp though. Nice one mate. I've been doing a bit of paddling in my rockport old town canoe but it weighs a ton. What kind is it you have? I think I'd like a lighter model
@WhenNaturePauls
@WhenNaturePauls 2 года назад
It a silver birch broadland 15 in duralite. I haven't put it on the scales, but sold as being 31.5kg (29.5kg if you have ash gunwhales) so not the lightest but manageable. And since the disappearance of royalex there doesn't seem to be a much lighter material now (that I'm aware of) unless you go for fibreglass/wood or novacraft's tuff stuff. Thanks for watching, Paul.

Thank you. The sail is made by endless river and so is the pole, I also have a factory fitted sailing seat and a foot glued to the canoe to hold it in position, but you can just clamp it to an existing seat. I don't have a dagger board, downwind only for me at the moment. Thank you for watching, Paul
