The Scottish Island Owned By The Community | Gigha

I head to the Isle of Gigha, the Scottish Island owned by the community. Located on the west coast of Scotland and accessible from Tayinloan on The Kintyre Peninsula, Gigha is a short 20 minute ferry crossing away, making it a great island for a day trip.
Gigha is a small island in Scotland's Inner Hebrides known for its community ownership model. In 2002, the island's residents successfully purchased Gigha from a private owner through a community buyout scheme, aided by funding from sources like the National Lottery and the Scottish Land Fund. This change in ownership empowered the community to take control of the island's resources and develop sustainable economic opportunities.
Since becoming community-owned, Gigha has made strides in renewable energy, tourism promotion, sustainable agriculture, community engagement, and environmental conservation. The island now boasts wind turbines and solar panels to generate clean energy, welcoming accommodations for tourists, support for local farming, and a commitment to preserving its natural beauty. Gigha's story is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and their ability to shape the future of their own landscapes and livelihoods.

WHO AM I?
I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in my home country Scotland and now is time to change that!
I am a huge fan of campervan travel and alternative living and I've spent over 600 nights living in vans, it’s my favourite way to travel due to the incredible freedom, adventure and the affordability.
My campervan is a 2001 Toyota Hiace high roof van. It was originally used by the Royal Mail and then purchased by the previous owner and self-converted into a DIY campervan.
On this channel, I’ll be sharing about my campervan, any DIY I do, and most importantly sharing my road trip adventures as I finally get to travel my beautiful home country of…. SCOTLAND!

I was there in 1976 - we took a very small boat across. I thought we’d arrived in paradise. The water was turquoise, fresh and clear. We hired bicycles and cycled from one end to the other. The garden was then The Horlick’s Garden and we were alone. I like the look of the new campsite. Gigha is referred to as God’s Island. What a fantastic place.

I was on Gigha yesterday for 24 hours. I parked at the Dark Sky Theatre, where I was so lucky to see the northern lights, as well as spectacular Milky Way views. The gardens were well worth the £7 entry fee, too. I really enjoyed my 24 hours there and would recommend it as a detour on the Kintyre 66 route.

Its been tragic for Scotland, the land ownership since after the clans were broken, most of my ancestry were evicted by landlords. With ownership comes enterprise and freedom
@kovie9162
@kovie9162 День назад
That's what I was thinking. I'm not Scottish but I know a little about its history, and how the English kings defeated the Scots by buying off many of their nobles by granting them land that was gotten by military conquest, dividing the Scottish people and turning these nobles against them. It was incredibly cruel, cynical and brutal, and even as ownership of some of that land passed on to others with no connection to this history, by purchase, the taint of the original means of acquisition remained. It's not unlike how most of the land of the Americas that came to be privately owned was originally acquired, by military conquest and shady land deals that divided native tribes and pitted them against each other. My own people have some experience with that, ancient and modern, but this isn't the place to get into that.

Just picked a jar of blackberries and a jar of nettle seeds two days ago (giving thanks to the plants themselves whilst doing it) they were both quite wonderful and are very healthy. Nettles are so underrated and misrepresented in our society look up what they do for us Ruth it's pretty amazing really. 🌿💚

@@ruthaisling Nettles and Blackberries are some of the easiest to forage as they're so abundant and recognisable Sis' this is only my second year gathering Nettle seeds and it's so easy I actually fill a jar of them quicker than I do the Blackberries and OMG! I flipping adore them they've had a really noticeable effect on my vitality or something and that is actually what they are known for. It's like they put a spring in my step...that's what it feels like. They taste nice too I hope you're as amazed by them as I am when you do try them. Don't forage anything next to any roads though because the plants just like trees are cleaning the air of car emmissions for us so they might be a wee bit toxic. You'll get the hang of it and all the info we need is online anyway. Good luck Ruth and I really love your posts too.

Another bonnie adventure on this beautiful Island of Gigha! The scenery & views are stunning, along with the lovely beach & the fascinating Fisherman's Cave, with all the names carved in the rocks from way back, many years ago. Also, the choice of seafood in that wee hut there was amazing & that halibut bagel you had for lunch looked delicious! Along with the cute wee Ice Cream Parlor, with the home made Ice Cream & in such unique Flavors. As well as, the wee honesty box filled with baked goods.What a treat that would be! Only in Scotland! Aye lass! I was also really happy to see you eating your porridge there! No doubt trying to keep up with auld John Taylor from Lead Hills Village! Well good for you! Perhaps you'll make it to 137 years yourself now lass. LOL. I'm also glad to see that there were no spiders in your porridge hiding in the blackberries though.Very tickly going down I would imagine! Let's hope old John didn't have any spiders in his either! Although, maybe that was his real secret of living such a long life! LOL .I also really loved the South part of the Island, especially the lovely Achamore Gardens.They are just so lush & beautiful, with such pretty flowers, exotic plants, foliage, trees, the cool bamboo maze and... lots of bumble bees. All this, along with such an interesting history as well. It looks very peaceful there & it would be such a joy to just walk around the gardens & take in the beauty all around you.Then to top it all off, there is that amazing view! Stunning! Finally, there's the Boathouse & that delicious looking Seafood Curry dinner that you had. My mouth was watering just watching you eat it. Yum! Wow! There's no doubt about it, this is a beautiful Island! The people who live & own land or homes on this lovely Island of Gigha are truly blessed! Thank you for sharing this delightful experience!

Excellent video Ruth, I'm glad you had good weather for your trip, I've been to Gigha over a dozen times and the weather has always been good, it can be dry when the nearby mainland is wet from the rain! Your trip reminds me that I need to visit for leisure and not just for work. A tip for travellers to Gigha, on weekdays the first ferry over can be very busy with contractors, so it's best avoided. Your holiday isn't as vital to the island as someone waiting for a tradesman to call! 👍

You made me chuckle when you said you don't like marmalade. I used to get teased mercilessly as a child if there was anything with marmalade or dried fruit, because I'd always say "but I dinnae like the peels!" 😠😂 There's a reason you remove it from fruit, and it's not too eat it! That bramble and peat sounds lovely though. Oh, and tablet... 😋😋😋

There are also some mainland estates that have been bought back by the people from millionaire land owners. We need much more of this. Get the land back into public ownership locally.

Hi Ruth, You mentioned purchasing land at the beginning, but are foreigners also able to purchase under the same conditions? Recently, the number of overseas buyers has been increasing in Japan, but the value of land is likely to be divided. The atmosphere of the island seems to be similar to that of Japan. It is a moderately sized island for tourists to enjoy local specialties, and it is not completely touristy, so it seems that you can enjoy a moderate local feeling. How do backpackers without cars spend their time? There are all sorts of places to see, so you can easily enjoy the magnificent nature.
@ruthaisling
@ruthaisling 8 месяцев назад
Yes, foreigners can also buy land in Scotland. A man from Denmark is Scotland's biggest landowner - www.scotsman.com/arts-and-culture/this-danish-businessman-is-now-the-largest-landowner-in-scotland-564902 There is public transport in Scotland like trains and buses but they might be infrequent and not as reliable / punctual like in Japan!
@brucecurtis6281
@brucecurtis6281 6 месяцев назад
There is Scottish government and crowdfunding support for local communities to buy land from absentee landlords and there are increasing areas of land being purchased by the local people. Eigg is an amazing place, and I have been there often. You can take a car onto the island on a ferry, or take a bicycle. Or just walk, but it would take several days to see all the island has to offer on foot. And the weather can deliver four seasons in a day, for most of the year. And the people are great. I’m sure you can find transport answers if you Google the Eigg trust. Taxis will be possible, even a bus . Or hitch; it’s not the American Midwest! Just don’t be in a hurry; there is no translation for emergencies like mañana in Gaelic
