Solo Winter Camping Under a Tarp in a Snowstorm - Algonquin Park

To kick off the start of winter camping season in Algonquin Park I headed into the backcountry during the first real snowstorm of the winter. I spend one night winter camping under a tarp tucked into an Algonquin Park hardwood forest. The temperatures were mild and it made for a relaxing enjoyable backcountry trip.

I went looking for "winter tarp camping" and you popped up. Awesome set up! LOVE your knots; I'm still learning those and your process was well filmed - I think I can do that. Shelter first, then fire - exactly right, even if it's dark. Liking your channel; subbed. Cheers!

It's good to hear that this video popped up in search! Sometimes it's nice to keep things simple and just get out to enjoy some solitude in the forest. Knots do come in handy, I would highly recommend learning a bowline👌 Thanks for subscribing! Cheers!

You have that awesome hot tent and you are out winter camping with a tarp! Good for you Alec, back to basics and closer to nature. Adversity and discomfort brings out the best in a person, although you looked pretty comfortable. Beautiful second day with the blue sky and sun glistening off the snow. Keep filming, Fraser, Lisa and I enjoyed watching this together. You are living your passion.

Hot tenting solo is a lot of work and I just wanted to keep things simple on this trip. It was also not very cold, probably -5°C was the coldest. I like cold camping with a tarp because it's lightweight and condensation is never an issue. Spending time in the cold definitely helps you deal with stress better in my opinion. Thanks for watching!

Well I have to admit this is the first video I have seen where the lack of speaking really works! Your filming was awesome! Snow and blue sky was fantastic! At first I thought you were setting up a hammock but when it turned out to be a tarp, I was amazed! Your an awesome outdoorsman! How you handled doing that was unbelievable but it proved to me that nothing is impossible if you know what your doing! Great video and thanks for all the hard work you had to do to share that adventure with us! Rick From Virginia

Hey Alec, great video! Today I watched your 5 day solo trip series and I'm wondering if you would consider doing a video where you go through all of the gear that you use. I'm trying to plan a trip for sometime in May and I'm having trouble finding a list of all of the gear that I'll need. Keep up the great work!
@AleconAdventures
@AleconAdventures 3 года назад
Hey Matthew, I'm happy you're enjoying my videos. That's a good idea, I may do canoe camping gear and tip videos in the early spring. When packing for a canoe trip I always bring a canoe and related essentials, paddles, safety kit and PFD. Then some sort of shelter with sleeping bag and pad. Next is food with necessary cookware/stove and some sort of water purification with water bottles. Then 2 maps(one backup) with map case or zip lock to keep dry, compass, first aid kit, toilet paper, rope(bear hang if necessary), headlamp, saw, lighter/matches, repair kit or at least duck tape. Lastly clothes, don't pack cotton especially in May, synthetic or wool is best. I like one set of day clothes and one set for sleeping with warm layers and rain gear. You want to keep your sleeping bag and extra clothes dry so pack them in a dry bag or line a backpack with a garbage bag. One set of sturdy shoes/boots for paddling and portaging which will get wet and camp shoes. These are the basics but you can add to this list. I also always bring fishing and camera gear. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching!

@AleconAdventures

Hey, that's good to hear! Algonquin is peaceful and beautiful in the winter. There are plenty of good options; the Minnesing Trail, starting at the Art Gallery and going down Source Lake Road, the Old Rail Trail at Mew Lake, to name a few. Just be sure you are camped 30m from any trail, portage, body of water or designated summer campsites. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

@@AleconAdventures actually last year in -25 C tried it ( backyard ) my equipment was 10×12 tarp large garbage bag portable barbecue. wood burner ( actually for charcoal but burnt wood like a firepit ) cigarette lighter candle matches and few things like hatchet hunting knife and fire wood you pick up at stores and twine. My clothes were good winter clothes reasonable winter boots good winter gloves some wind the results were eye opening. as I set up leen too configuration accounting of wind started forging for kindling around yard and park ( more difficult in winter ) paced off one step from tarp and set firepit feet and hands now getting cold ( 1/2 hour ) hand so numb could not 'flick' lighter ( and lighter also not working right ) lucky for backup matches ( wrapped in swanwrap ) got candle lit put it kindling took a while but got fire added wood good decent fire sat on top of garbage bag getting warmth from fire but feet still getting cold after about little over hour learned my lesson: never go into woods when these conditions forecast. my guess is down to -10 C is survivable. you have 1 hr. to get out hunkering down means death you hands go numb become useless your feet go numb how you gonna walk? then next is death I would say it is much deadlier than we realize

Very fine video! And some observations ... #1 - Alec - Why did you take off your gloves to saw the deadfall into lengths? I would have left mine on. #2 - You have a Gransfors Bruk Small Forest Axe just like MOI (but it's not the Ray Mears edition, like mine (which I have dubbed “My Precious!”) #3 - You DID use Mears’ method of splitting the rounds of firewood in half and then into quarters and wedges etc. Good job! #4 - While I enjoyed the lack of your own voice in the audio, I found the soft background piano music a bit distracting. (Maybe use some various recordings of nature in future videos?)

Great video. Just wondering if you have tried standing the wood straight up in that stove. I have seen others try that and it burned longer and hotter. I don't have that stove but a square one and it seems to work pretty well. You would of course have to start the fire on top and burn from the top down. I loved this video format, it reminds me of Bushcraft Bear, he was in Germany I think.

It's safe to drink after boiling but it's possible there's some debris in the water. I will often strain the water through a bandana if there's lots of debris. Thanks for watching the video!

@@AleconAdventures Thank you for the response! Would it be the same with water from a stream or river/lake? Would boiling the water be enough or do you need some sort of a filter besides a bandana?

Boiling is the surest method to kill disease causing organisms including viruses, bacteria, and parasites in all water. A filter would remove debris
