Solomon's Key is checkmated by Chess Master (commentary)

Solomon's Key is without question my absolute favorite old school game. I was introduced to Solomon's Key as an 8-year-old in the late 1980's, around the same time I began playing chess. I enjoy the game so much that I decided to stream it at / chessnetwork while providing commentary. Solomon's Key is generally recognized as one of the most difficult games ever to appear on the NES. Quite often the game can be found on "Top 10 Hardest NES Games" lists, or at the very least be spoken of by a great many who think it ought to have made the most difficult games list. While this platform puzzle game for the Nintendo Entertainment System is not as well known as others, those who have first hand experience playing it can attest to its great difficulty. My objective during the livestream was to not only beat the game with 1-life, but also to obtain what is considered the highest possible Game Deviation Value (GDV) of an 84. The GDV basically represents how well you have completed the game. Additionally, and aside from a few items in rooms 35 & 48, every single item that benefited the score/# of lives were gathered, all hidden rooms were revealed along with every trick, and the best ending possible was obtained. This was my 1st attempt at my objective which was tried on September 12th, 2015.

What a fantastic run and video! I honestly think this may be the best Solomon's Key video in existence right now. In addition to beating the game without dying, achieving the highest-possible GDV, and revealing if not collecting every item in the game, your real-time commentary adds something to this video that puts it above any other video of this game (that I know of). Explaining what the hidden items do, pointing out key blocks that turn out to be necessary later in the level, talking us through your strategies, and taking us on a journey through the emotional highs, lows, and tense moments of this attempt. This combination of gameplay and commentary is outstanding! Congratulations on achieving your goal, and thank you for making this video!

Brilliant, Jerry! You chose an intriguing game and played it very well, giving insightful commentary as you went. There doesn't seem to be a lot of that happening with playthroughs and retro gaming in general on RU-vid. People focus more on their alter egos than the games ... quite the bore. And this made me want to play Solomon's Key.

Jerry....checked it out...just fun and well done. One thing I can offer....there is no need to walk into that one door on 41 I believe....I think it is a fun "myth" that got shared around. I have fallen into the door and jumped into the door from above to test....still able to jump to start the next screen. The only thing I did not test was jumping up into the door....perhaps that negates your opportunity on the next screen? Do you have a favourite item? Mine is the Rabbit....I've always just called him "Bugs"....such a cool way to collect him. Be well! Mark

My father used to play this game when I was a kid. He woke up early and play the game while my siblings and I are preparing to go to school. He paused the game and sent us to school and came back home and continue playing. When I arrived home in the afternoon, he was still playing. He really beat the game in the evening! His strategy? He paused the game at the start of the stage and think for several minutes. Unpaused then continue playing. I think this is the only game in NES he was really hooked up to. I cannot even surpass him. I only beat this game using an emulator using save/load.

33:10 What :S ... there is a specific block that you have to jump into 11 times to get an item ... and it only works if you haven't died during the play through. I'm guessing back in the day the only way to know that was from magazines?
@lepuuttelu

Question for Jerry: How long did it take you to beat this, originally? Was your dad into video games and did you get any tips to this game from him or others, or was it just you figuring things out for yourself?
@ChessNetwork
@ChessNetwork 8 лет назад
+lepuuttelu I don't recall exactly. I know that I did beat it when I was 8 or 9, but certainly not how I did hear. Many many deaths when I was 8 or 9. No, my Dad wasn't into video games back then. I did my own thinking when playing this game...lots of mistakes...and then finding improvements...this same approach is used in chess. :)

@monemal-semien4548
@monemal-semien4548 8 лет назад
Could you please elaborate as to why you want Jerry to play Stockfish? Even Magnus would stand a chance. Ask for something more realistic (As in not completely one sided) and entertaining. Maybe Jerry vs Stockfish, with Jerry having a 15 move aid, or material odds would be entertaining and not entirely one-sided. Take your idiocy elsewhere.
@WillToWinvlog
@WillToWinvlog 8 лет назад
+Monem Al-Semien Idiocy? It's his opinion... I wonder if you're that much of a jerk to random people in real life.
@monemal-semien4548
@monemal-semien4548 8 лет назад
***** Likewise, it is my opinion that what he's asking for is idiotic. I do agree I came out sounding like a jerk, and it can't be justified, but I just got sick and tired of people asking Jerry to play Stockfish. Jerry can barely handle 'Computer Impossible' on chess.com, how can he handle a Chess Engine as powerful as Stockfish (Arguably in the low to mid-3000s in comparison to humans). I , however, would find it entertaining if Jerry played Stockfish with one of the criteria I set in my previous comment.

Monem Al-Semien If you rather watch Jerry play humans - there are over two hundred videos of him doing that. I, for one, want to see him play the best - and if he uploads that video, and you're uninterested, don't click it. Failing to realize that is the epitome of idiocy.
