As u HUGE Bret Hart fan, I don't blame Goldberg. I blame the powers behind WCW, letting Goldberg to go that long without, more training? Mentoring? Idk... but you can't blame Bret for getting sour or bitter at times, you see Sting, Ric Flair, a bunch of wrestlers in their passing years, and miss out on being able to wrestle the next couple generations of wrestlers knowing you were the best ever

Bret Hart: the man who never injured an opponent in a career that lasted 20 years. The safest worker in the history of professional wrestling. He apparently shares responsibility for his injury against a relatively green guy who kicked him square in the face out of nowhere. FOH, Bischoff.

@tuxedotservo

Bret flip-flopping on his stance on Goldberg isn't surprising. He's healed enough to live a "normal" life, but his brain is still effed up - what happened to Bret was beyond just a concussion... it was severe brain trauma. That has lasting implications. So Bret changing his opinion on what happened isn't a surprised, considering the trauma to his brain. Bret's is lucky he didnt' get turned into a drooling doll after that. I just hope his family watches him, as people with that level of trauma start drifting toward dark thoughts as they get older. I recall the concussion of a Vikings kicker/punter (can't remember his name at the moment) that was concussed so severely that it basically changed who he was as a human being. Brain injuries are no joke.

Goldberg vs. Scott Steiner at Fall Brawl 2000 was another really good match (albeit with a very stupid build to it and a dumb finish). Bischoff is full of it here. Bret was renowned for wanting to make matches look good while being as safe as possible. Goldberg, and even he will admit this, was barely trained. And he had injured other wrestlers in the ring as well (LA Parka, The Giant, Konnan, etc). That injury was in NO WAY Bret’s fault.

I think maybe Bill getting to have the comeback that Bret never got to have. Getting to just show up every so often and get paid lots of money for a few minutes work. And Bill not only NOT being any better in the ring, but being WORSE and more dangerous (almost dropping Undertaker on his head during their match for example). All of that may have soured Bret on Goldberg more than before I think.

Just playing devil’s advocate, but I think what Bischoff might have been trying to point out is that everyone who steps in the ring knows they’re putting themselves at some level of risk, obviously making this statement to somewhat defend a friend. Bret has been very vocal about his frustration over what happened, understandably so, and just constantly buries Goldberg. I’m sure some of his peers would like him to “take the high road” and maybe lay off of Bill a little, but it’s important to understand just how many millions of dollars this incident cost Bret. He could have had huge deals with WWE if he would have been able to have a second run the way HBK. I see both sides for very different reasons. Ultimately, it was an accident that could have and should have been prevented.

As a WCW diehard, it always seems that anytime there’s commentary on Goldberg it’s over done to make him look perfect or he’s getting completely buried and they make the guy look like he can’t walk and chew gum. Very rarely has his story ever been told honestly. Yes in the summer of 1998 he was the most over a guy in the company and he beat Hogan for the big gold belt on nitro in the Georgia Dome in front of 40,000+ people and that was a great night on nitro. But everyone always forgets that by the fall of 1998 he wasn’t as over anymore. WCW fans were different from WWF fans. WWF fans you could literally do the same thing night and night out and that’s what they wanted. And WCW things had to evolve, That’s why Eric Bishoff listening to Hogan about the finger poke of doom and putting the NWO back together was a terrible idea. But as they were getting up to Starrcade The fans were chanting “Goldberg sucks” and they were having to put in Goldburg chance over the PA system. But the guy did have good matches. I think looking back if someone would’ve actually mentored him and explain to him that you can’t go undefeated your entire career and explain to him why he couldn’t I think he would’ve understood. Yeah undefeated streak was a great tool to get him over but the problem was if you just keep the 32nd matches and no one ever beats him at some point the fans do get tired of it. I love Jim Ross but his commentary on this subject has always bothered me, for one he wasn’t in WCW at the time and he completely overlooked the fact that the fans were tired of him doing these 30 second matches. I mean God forbid if it was another wrestler that did this he would’ve been booed out of the building and the dirt sheets would’ve shit all over him. And Kevin Nash actually started booking two months after Starrcade even Eric Bischoff is commits by the time he handed the book to Kevin it was already too late they had already made too many wrong decisions and WCW was swirling the drain at this point.

Bret in his shoot interview from I guess the early 2000s mentions the big potatoes he took before the kick, the figure 4 and a random elbow Goldberg hit him with. As for bischoff, guys a complete idiot and had 1 good idea his entire time in wrestling. You can't say Goldberg was his idea either cause that was a completely spontaneous push that didn't come from an office, it was the fans.

Wish Bret would make up his mind on if he forgives Goldberg or not but if he forgives him then move on. I always felt like he had no business being in wcw anyway

I wonder if what happened at Crown Jewel with Undertaker soured Bret on Goldberg.

Didn't know Bret could've been concussed from that figure 4 spot and if he kept wrestling after the match with Goldberg whether he knew or not sounds like we can't put all the blame on Goldberg, mistakes happen.

Except that spot was also Goldberg’s fault.

... so Goldberg screwed up *twice* in that match with Bret. Not surprising.

People are surprised how petty Bischoff is? How soon we forget he wanted to “Put the stake in Vince’s heart, take it out, and stab him again”, read RAW results on Nitro, and totally rip any fans that didn’t agree with either his views or his booking. He’s a manchild that was given a blank checkbook by Ted Turner. That’s his legacy.

For a guy who ruined two companies, Bischoff seems to have a pretty high opinion for himself. Hes lives off a year of success he had 25 yesrs ago. At least Bully Ray has had a successful career to back up his shit takes

Bret got the stroke in 02 , the kick happened in 99. Was it ever confirmed that it had something to do with it?

I have no sympathy for Brett hart for just how much of a bitter old man he’s become and how flip floppy he is on the Goldberg thing. I don’t really like Goldberg the wrestler but he seems to have grown and just become somewhat of a decent person since his wcw days. Brett is just as bad as bischoff , actually he’s worse.
