I have a Rega Planar 2 and absolutely adore it apart from the annoying hum / buzz. Tried this method and it’s completely gone! Thank you so much you absolute legend!

After reading and watching your post and video I have at long last cured my hum from my Project 1 Xpression Carbon X(UK) TT, Project Tube Box S Phono pre-amp and my Marantz SR7010 amp. Such a simple and cheap solution worked like a dream. I can, at long last, listen to my vinyl collection as it should be heard. Thank you.
I don't think the issue is with the Phonobox though, because I bought a Phonobox to try fix this issue as I already had it on the phono stages of two completely separate integrated amps, in 2 different houses. Before I moved I was convinced it was my mains power, but then when it still happened I tried the Phonobox. Still had the problem. I did this fix, but when you think about it you are really just grounding the turntable straight to the mains. This fix only reduced the hum for me, I can still hear it quite a bit on my DT990 headphones, and it's bad enough to actually completely envelope much of the lower bass frequencies. I found that it got worse as the record played, and eventually worked out that there is some kind of electro-magnetic interference coming from the motor. Basically as the tone arm approaches closer to the motor, the hum increases. If I put my hand over the motor the hum lessens, so I guess I need to try and find a way to completely shield the motor now...
Hello, This is an old issue but there is a solution for your motor hum issue. Search for Pro-Ject High Power IT Power Supply and use that to power your turntable's motor. It is a grounded power supply designed to address problems like yours.

Hahahahaha glad it helped you, but now I'm jealous because mine still has a very faint buzz after doing this. Yeah I'm not surprised your local Hi-Fi store didn't thick of this. For some reason, audio people seem to overthink certain issues when the solution is a lot more fundamental. What amp are you using?
Brian Su - tried this solution, did not work for me either. I used the a pair of RCA cables which game together with a ground, connect from TT to pre-amp. The buzz was reduced but not entirely eliminated. T Tried the 3-pin plug with ground wire on the pre-amp and the TT separately, still no good. Unlike you when I touched the ground wire to the ground portion of the pre-amp, the buzz did not disappear and got a little louder. Here are the 2 things I'm going to try: Going to try connecting re-jigging the 3-pin plug to tidy up the wires inside the plug, hope that helps a little bit. Got idea from a video from the comments below. Next going to try and ground my amplifier, not sure how useful this will be but no harm trying. Did you manage to solve your buzz?
Fantastic job. There generally are two types of noise associated with turntables ie they are not properly grounded which makes a hum or there is a ground loop which makes a buzz. They can be difficult to solve glad you solved yours quickly. Enjoy your new turntable.

Thanks Brian, that was a really helpful video. I had the same problem with my Pro-ject Debut Carbon TT and I was about to return it to the shop with a massive complain. The fix you suggest in your video initially did not help, probably because I use a different pre-amp. However I tried different approach and used additional grounding cable from the TT directly to my AV receiver and the annoying noise stopped. Your video made me consider alternative solutions for a problem that should not be there on a first place. You are right- the manufacturer need to do a bit of work in this area! Hello, wow Pro-Ject Carbon!! :) Your solution is much better than mine. You should ground your TT + Pre-Amp to your AV Receiver (amplifier). The problem that I have is my receiver (the B&W Zepplin Air) has a plastic body so it can't be used as a ground.
Vince Popnikolov So you basically used 2 different grounding cable both attached it to your TT, one to your Phono amp's ground and other to your AV receiver's ground, right???
Mert M. You can attached the ground to any part of your system so long as they are connected to each other. I generally attach it to my pre amp ground post.

For anyone uncertain about the type of wire to use. I bought a grounded extension chord, cut off the male current carrying prongs, cut off the female side of the chord, exposed the grounded chord (green colour) and taped it to the grounding port of the turntable (in this case a Fluance RT80).

I solved the problem with my Project Debut S phono the same way. I came to the conclusion after servicing an old Pioneer PL-512 turntable a couple of years ago. When I looked inside it the tonearm was not only grounded by the usual ground wire but internally they double bonded the tonearm ground to the motor ground the motor being an 240 volt AC type and that was connected to electrical earth via the mains lead. That stuck in the back of my mind and I wondered why they did that. The answer is that a lot of amplifiers and phono stages a powered by double insulated transformers with no earth connection at all I suppose that they could have run a spur internally to a earth connection. I think this leads to a floating ground even thought the turntable is grounded to the chassis of the amplifier that in turn is not grounded to electrical earth leading to a ground loop and that annoying buzzing sound. It is easily fixed.
Thanks for doing this! I was dealing with the exact same issue, and it's fixed now, thanks to your very well done video! I used a 3 prong replacement plug and removed the 2 power prongs and left the ground. Then crimped spade plugs to some speaker wire, and hooked it to my Pro-ject Box DC and zero hum now! Thank you!
Just bought one secondhand, and the noise is killing me. Can't wait to try this. My Amp has a ground on it, but is only a 2 core power supply, so no ground into the mains. Will try this now!!
Thanks for this video Brian. I'm not good enough with electronics to do this, but it gave me the push to investigate and in doing so I discovered that Pro-Ject sells an official power supply for this called the 'High Power IT', which eradicated the problem entirely and instantly. Same principle - it has an earth wire to ground the turntable effectively. But I never would have asked the right questions that led me to THAT solution without yours. Thank you very, very much :-)
Hi Brian, i have the project debut III with a built in pre amp, i connected my grounded plug ( same as yours) and tried to ground the amp but it increased the humming, any ideas?

The ground lug does not make contact through the black anodization. You need a new ground lug. And solder a wire to the tone arm ground and to the new ground lug. This worked on my turntable.
smyth77 Hi, Originally I had the ground wire from the SL fixed to my phono stage ground screw on the back of it = hum from record player, i don’t know why as in previous houses I lived in and with other phono stages i had no problem.... anyway I took an old wireless wall plug and put the ground wire from the SL and screwed it in to the earth plug pin. (If you don’t know what this is it is imperative that you get help from an electrician!) I then plugged this into a wall socket. Viola, no hum. I figure this is because the ground from my phono wasnt working correctly. Also I’m based in the uk, i have no experience of other countries plugs etc

Normally would rely on ground through screen of phono cables to power amp so likely there is no continuous grounding through those active speakers. Not a design fault as in another set up connecting the extra earth would work opposite way in forming a ground loop.
Thanks so much for sharing this Brian - I too have this problem with a very old Project Debut Deck and while I let it slide for a long time and tolerated it, I can now no longer listen to music without hearing it and it's driving me mad! I've just purchased a grounding wire and anti-static/grounding plug (was scared to do the work myself unfortunately) so really hoping this will resolve it finally. Will update when both components arrive, gutted as it means I can't listen for a few days. Thanks so much again.
PS. One quick question I forgot to ask, did by any chance placing your hand on the your tone arm metal make the hum louder? Seems to be the case with mine

I unplugged the RCA cables leading to the TT but left the ground connected and the hum was still there. Tried grounding the preamp directly to the wall using the 3-pin plug method you showed, but the hum get louder. Did you manage to eliminate the hum on your end?
Hello, that's very strange. I still have a little bit of hum but from what I've read all phono pre-amps will have a little bit of hum. I now have 2 Phono pre-amps, the other one being a Chinese tube amp. Both have the same level of hum once the metal chassis is earthed to the wall socket. The hum is a lot louder when it isn't earthed. Yours seem to be the opposite, which is puzzling....
Got a new turntable (NAD C556) paired with the Pro-Ject phono box, the hum was significantly reduced compared to my previous TT. The NAD turntable was internally grounded, so I didn't have to ground it to the phono amp. Hum is only audible when I turn the volume up past the 60% range. Attaching an earth wire from the wall to the phono amp did not reduce the hum either. I'm using a pretty old Pro-Ject phono amp (still using a DC power supply). My opinion is that the Pro-Ject Phono Amp isn't the best at insulation and isolating the electrical interference. But I'm looking to upgrade to the Schiit Mani in the near future, so hopefully the hum gets reduced further.
I have the carbon tt,it’s weird I don’t have a hum like what’s shown in the video.I bought the Project High Power It,which is a grounded ac power supply from the turntable to the mains.This really does a good job of getting rid of the aux hiss you get when the amp/ receiver is turned up loud. My thing with the carbon is when I place the stylus down on the vinyl I have a a slight noise which isn’t a buzzing sound,it’s kinda like a hum I suppose,not sure to what it is. It can only be heard when there is no music,but it’s weird because when I place the cover it reduces this sound. Pretty sure it’s not the motor screw issue or anything like that,I thought that issue was from a few years back. It’s a great sounding and looking tt,and really like it,just would be cool if I could get rid of the noise,I think it might be a pre-amp issue,any one with any ideas?
hmmm grounding the AC power supply to the turntable in my case won't make any difference as it only powers the motor and has no connection to the audio path at all.
Sorry if you said it in your vid but you said it was a design flaw by Project. As I understand that the issue was caused in the pre-amp, does that mean that the pre amp module is also from Project? And could this mean that, if you have the pre amp built into your amplifier, the amplifier itself might produce a hum if it’s not grounded? If I take a look at my Marantz pm6004, it seems that power connection has no ground (only phase and 0).
Hey I'm wondering if you think your fix would help me. I have a bit of a different setup w/ a project-carbon that has the ground connected to the turntable itself from an amp directly beneath it, and I was also getting a buzz that I'm 90% sure is due to a grounding issue, but since the grounding goes to the amp (which has a 3-pin connector) so it's receiving AC there I'm pretty sure. So basically, with this slightly different setup do you think the additional grounding could still do anything for me (and also where did you get the plug to allow for the additional grounding). +PastaPig hmm no harm trying. Your AC adaptop (which has a 3-pin connector) may not be grounded. Are you sure the Earth pin isn't just plastic? The white plug was purchased from a normal hardware store along my high street, you can get them anywhere :).
Using project essential 3 here, mine is working great, no buzz. I don't know what kind of network or devices you put into your wall electric outlet.. but if it is Powerline Network (RJ-45 to electric wall) i suggest you remove them all and use only RJ-45 wire or wifi. Powerline Network devices send garbage signal to all AC/DC devices.
Noise is caused by the pre-amp -> amplifier path. Even with the turntable disconnected it still buzzes. I've already tried disconnecting all HomePlug devices. I tried basically everything, even running the pre-amp + amp + speaker all on battery power to no avail :(

Change the RCA anything with screen ,connect that screen with any thin gauge wire to the cardboard with outer tinfoil where u can solder them..do the same thing with the other side's rca screen,connect/solder a thin wire connect it to then the phono amp's ground.
Ahh there's nothing wrong with the Pro-Ject TT. This fault here is the design of the Pro-Ject Phono Box pre-amp :) You'll face the same issue with the most expensive TT in the world if you use this Phono Box.
bought a new Pro-Ject Classic Phono Amp facing the same buzzing noise can i use this method forever without harming my speakers ? or any other solution regarding this ?
Earthing will extend the life of your system and speakers, you only need to do this if you're using a cheap amplifier. The good ones are all earthed. Yes there are a few other methods that I've covered in a new video. The link to it is in the description.
Hi Brian, I have a vintage Rega P2. Ive tried buying a normal extension cable, cut off the female socket, normal pin and active pin, stripped back the earth lead. I screwed this onto the grounding post of my Pro ject phono box s2 and plugged it into the power board where my speakers and phono preamp are connected. However, the hum is still present and very noticeable at high volumes. Is this normal? Or have I gone about this the wrong way?
@@BrianSu Nevermind I found the problem. It had nothing to do with the preamp grounding. Turns out the hum was caused by incorrect cartridge wiring configuration and the location of my preamp. I’d initially put it behind my TT near the power cord which creates a hum probably caused by interference
Well done Brian, solved my long term hum issue, thanks. Suggest you update the title of the video to include the word Hum to make it easier for find when searching. The issue you're fixing isn't Buzz, its Hum. There is a difference (I just learned this recently!)

you're using carbon EVO? if so, you don't need to do this, check my other video out. I am now using Carbon EVO and there are more elegant ways to do this.
Thank you I had the same hum also with pro-ject dc Carbon turntable and pro-ject phono box preamp. I always thought it was the turntable causing the issue until I used the phono input on my marantz integrated pm 8005 then the hum went away but the integrated phono stage didn’t sound very great(less dynamics). So I did this with my pro-ject phono preamp and the hum went away and sounds way better then the marantz phono stage.
Excellent. I have a project carbon debut with the project phono box s. Hums like crazy. The local rega dealer warned me about the hums from project turntables, but I found it to be the phonobox as well. Fixed my issue.
Ken Dedesko Rega hums as well unless you earth ground your pre amp or receiver. You use the exact same method. Don't call Rega or a hi-fi shop because they will attempt to sell you a "power cleaner". That's a big expensive box that provides the earth ground.
Hi I I dont have a ground wire for my TT so what if I used a ground wire from the stand alone amplifier GND to the preamp GND? Would that reduce the buzz from the pre amp?
Hi, Yes because this fix has nothing to do with the TT at all. It's just the nature of how pre amps work. Even without the TT connected, it'll still buzz unless grounded.
hey brian Just a question... what voltage was the plug you used? I have one 13A plug that has around 250 volts but it seems to be making the hum louder...

I see many comments asking how to wire the ground cable to the 3-pin plug. Here's a video of how to wire a UK 3-pin plug. Hey! I currently have the Project T1 connected to Project Phono box E. To get rid of the humming issue, I put the earthing cable (coming out from the turntable) on the RCA cables (coming out from the turntable). That straight up solved the issue but I don't know how safe that is. What is that earthing adapter thing called that you used in the video?
I don't understand what you've done with the earthing cable. You should connect it to the Phono Box's grounding screw. That's what I've done. I then run an additional cable to the Earth pin of the power plug.
@@BrianSu so I don't know how to run an additional cable through the earth pin. I'll explain what I've done - There are 3 wires coming out the turntable (2 RCA cables and 1 earthing). Instead of attaching the earthing cable to the grounding terminal on the preamp, I just touched it to the 2 RCA cables (which was attached to phono in) this resolved the humming issue for me. However, I don't know if it's the safest way to go. Hence, wanted to understand how you made that plug.
@@tanishqpradhan3 You'll need to attach the earth cable from your tone arm to the grounding pin of your pre-amp. That's the whole point of why it's there. Please do that first. Which country do you live in, so I can advise on the earthing.

that's exactly the same problem i have, i was looking for cables like the one you used to fix the issue, but i can't find it anywhere, so i think i have to make one by myself:( it would be great if you could make a video to show how you did it!!
it's really simple, just get a 3 pin wall plug and install a single wire to the Earth connector and connect the other end of that wire to the pre-amp's body :)

I think i know the probelm. Really really interesting video, helped me work out what's wrong with my amp. If there's a problem with the preamp or interface humming, its because of the --resistor--, the resistor must be blown, who knows why, a component could have been fused to the chassis ground (which is the problem I have with a cyrus two so I'm currently replacing parts in mine... But that explains with an external grounding fixed your problem Try get hold of a resistor for your box
Husayn hello, what resistor? I’ve had the same issue with a different pre-amp as well. It was a Chinese one with GE tubes. Same buzzing sound if not grounded.

Thanks for this video! Unfortunately, I have a similar problem, but connecting to ground doesn't seem to help. I have the same turntable but the version with the built in pre-amp, so I can directly connect the back of the turntable to a set of speakers using RCA cables. In any situation, whether or not I connect the back of the turntable/preamp to ground doesn't seem to affect the humming. Do you have any ideas of things I could try? I know it's not a problem with my speakers, because when I pull out the RCA cables, the hum disappears, and the hum also disappears when I turn off the power supply to the turntable. I also took the turntable to a hifi store a while back and there were no issues with humming. Perhaps a problem with my power supply (dirty electricity)?
yeah you can't use this method if your pre-amp is built in. The hum that you're getting is probably because your amp isn't grounded. I have the same problem because my speaker runs on 2 pin plug. The Amp in your hifi store is probably one of those expensive ones with metal body and runs off 3 pin plugs so the body is grounded. Unfortunately nothing can be done unless you change your amp?? What amp are you using?
For some reason, my buzzing depends on the cable used. My old cable had literally no noise, but was too short. I bought a $60 cable, and it still had the problem. But with a cheap dollar store cable, it worked perfectly fine. This is driving me crazy!
Brian Su The cable that works perfectly is an "accustic research performance series" And the expensive cable that I just bought is an "ultralink home turntable phono cable." I'm using it as an extension for the cable going from my turntable to my phono stage(a Schiit mani). It's just super weird though. It know it's a grounding issue with the more expensive cable, since when I touch the phono stage with my hand, or ground it out with an outlet ground, the buzzing reduces, but not completely. What I'll probably do is just try to find a longer version of the cable that I know works. It just sucks that I can't use the high quality cable that I bought, since it most likely has a much higher sound quality.
Unfortunately this method didn't work for me. I made a pair of cables using a double shielded coax for satellite TV. It worked like a charm. No hum even at full volume, and the length is almost ten feet. The coax core is copper plated iron!!!
My brand new Pro-Ject X2 has an unbearably loud hum. I've ordered a Pro-Ject High Power It cable but it's taking forever to arrive. I'm at my wits end.

buy a 3 pin power plug for your power socket. Open it up, screw the wire on to the Earth terminal and close the plug up then plug it into the power socket :)
@@geheimen I've had a look at that, it has a 3 pin connector as you say, this is surprising. Maybe the ground lug isn't connected to Earth from inside the unit. I would open it up and solder a wire to bridge the ground lug to earth internally as it's a much more elegant solution that running a length of wire to the power socket :)

The weird thing is that, exactly like in your video, the humming does decrease when I connect the normal gnd wire from the turntable…..it reduces it by half I would say. So it is doing something… it just doesn’t go away completely. That only happens when I do your solution.
The buzz comes from before the pre-amp not after. you may be right but doing otherwise has proven to be exactly the same. I've even tried it with a different speaker in front of the setup so no AC cables near the RCA at all.
Tried this setup with my Pro-ject Debut Carbon DC and my Phono Box DS. I still get a quiet hum when I sit next to the speaker. The hum is hardly noticeable when the tonearm is on the rest, but gets louder when it gets closer to the spindle. It does not matter whether the motor is running or not.
+Eric de Redelijkheid of course it won't matter whether the motor is running or not. It is isn't physically connected to the tone arm :). Anyway try this, build a battery pack to power your phono box and use that. disconnect the power adaptor from the turntable. If you still hear the buzz then it's 100% certain that it comes from your main speaker's amplifier and has nothing to do with the Pro-Ject stuff.

+Eric de Redelijkheid Hi, thanks for the advise. I believe we are both suffering from different issues. My interference is produced externally from the amplifier (not the external pre-amp). I am using a Bower and Wilkins Zeppelin Air. I tried hooking it up to a much cheaper speaker system (Bose Solo 15) and the buzzing became even louder. Perhaps the only solution is to look for an Amp that has an earthed body.
+Eric de Redelijkheid Very interesting. I have a Stanton t60 that I'm modifying. I've had a lot of problems along the way, but this is the last problem that I have: a hum which gets louder when you move the needle to the middle of the turntable. Curious.
fixed: i've misunderstood, i attached the grounding cable of the turntable to the plug :-) after some extra research i've noticed that i have to connect an extra cable to the ground of the preamp and then to the ground of a plug. So yes, this actualy works fine. Payed 60€ for this preamp...unbelievable. tnx!!!
one thing you have all the wires still wound up by the box this will create a magnetic field also doe look like that power supply has no real earth, and the earth inside the phono stage may not be good ether, do like your solution though glad a hard earth sorted it.
I solved my problem today with the Project High Power It grounded high performance power supply. No hum or buzz no modifications. Silence. They should probably include this.
sorry, that won't help with this problem. The High Power It only earths the motor, not the pre-amp. It might work if your turntable has a built in pre-amp and is thus powered by the High Power It, but in cases with external pre amps it won't solve this problem.
I have a project debut carbon. No built in preamp. It was buzzing... when I touched the cables in the back of the turntable it would buzz less. When I unplugged the the turntable from the electrical outlet it would stop buzzing. Since I added the Power It, no buzz
@@WindsorRealEstateProperties OK I've checked my Debut Carbon EVO and yes you're right! Pro-Ject has now connected the negative terminal of the motor power supply to the ground of the phono so the whole thing can now earth through the High Power It. On my previous turntable the Essential II (which is what is in this video), there was no such electrical connection so using High Power It made no difference at all and I had to find another way to earth the pre-amp.
@@WindsorRealEstateProperties I've taken out my DMM to check what is connected to what. I can confirm on the Debut Carbon EVO, the negative terminal of the motor is connected to the ground terminal of the tonearm, this explains your finding :)
@@Rylaaaa if I were you, I'd power the whole turntable with batteries to see whether this still happens. If it doesn't, then you'll know it's AC hum :)

Nope but I found the solution, I got a new turntable and it works like a charm now. I think Pro-ject put some really cheap power section on their turntables. Thanks anyway. ;)
@@ynnadk9859 ok on my new TT the Debut Carbon EVO, the phono ground lug is connected to the Negative (-) terminal of the DC Motor. The system is now grounded as I'm powering the motor with the Pro-Ject High Power it which is an earthed power adaptor, i.e. the transformer inside and the Negative terminal of the output are connected to earth.
I'm getting a buzz from my speakers with my turntable wired to it so I got a ground cable and it's still buzzing so I'm going to check all my cables when I get bk home
@@BrianSu no its a kam turntable I've HD it for a while just stored away so I will check all the cables and wires and move my plug addpter and see if that helps. My amp is nowhere near my turntable enough to cause a hum and I will also give my cartridge a clean and see if that helps
The little box and wire that resolved the problem. I have speakers that are rumbling when I put on my turntable. I tried distancing, decoupling, foam, rubber, wood, turtable platter mats....everything. I am ready to ditch the whole turtable idea. But this is tge first time I've seen thus method of truly grounding. So I would like to get that wire and plug in white box. What is it called? Do you have the link from which I can order it?
Any supermarket or a place like Radioshack will. Just look for a 3 pin AC power plug that doesn't come with the power cord installed. i.e. a plug for installing a power cord into.

I have Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC+Pro-Ject phono box and i change RCA cables, your fix not help im crazy i hope little bit when i watch your video. That Buzzing is sucks kills all. I have Pink Floyd-The Wall remaster 2011 release 2016 on 180g 2 LP and so clear record --- i hear A buzing that kills me totally-
RCA cables aren't to blame. Are you saying you still get buzzing despite earthing the phono box to your main's Earth terminal? Is there a difference in buzzing with and without the earth cable connected? If there isn't then you've not done it properly.
when i unplug earth wire buzzing is too louder i thing earthing is working but buzzing is still listenable. that buzzing is only with MM setings on phono box with MC is clear:-) i have MM :-) mc seting us dangerous for MM cart i try it only dor 5 secs and sound is shitty thats logic:-)
and which cable use for 3 pin power plug i use speaker cabel:-) and same effect like clasic grounding way, and i try grounding my av reciever Yamaha HTR 3063B trough GND and Am radio antena and body of avr is metal someone write this on forum what im found. Same effect too
Yes there will still be some buzzing. I have the same issue. To completely remove the humming/buzzing your amplifier itself must be grounded. What amplifier is your phono-box connected to? If it's a plastic body un-grounded type then it'll still buzz.
TheAgeOfAnalog right I’ve got one of these HE18s being delivered to a friend’s hotel in New York today. I can’t wait to test it out but it’ll be a long while before he will be able to pass it to me as I live in England. I’ll definitely let you know whether it works when I get it. If you live stateside, you should give it a go as they’re much cheaper to get there due to them all being stocked only in the US.
+Brian Su The audio signal coming from your turntable is considered unbalanced signal. Nothing wrong with that, its standard for all consumer electronics, but its sensitive to interference. You have the audio line running parallel to the power line against the wall, so youre getting the 50hz hum off the power line like due to the proximity of the two lines.
+Casey Bitts No it doesn't make a difference as the 50Hz hum comes from the amplifier within the B&W Zepplin. I have tried this with a Bose TV sound bar and this time there was nothing running parallel to the RCA cable, the hum was even louder thanks to Bose being an inferior brand that uses inferior parts!
nah they're American :P to be honest there are quite a few out there that look similar but the sound's in the detail. Just because they look similar doesn't mean the produce the level of vibrations, etc. Pro-Ject's tone arm is proprietary and the unique design isn't seen on the others. I'd say the tone arm + cartridge plays more of a role in sound signature than other parts of the unit.
