You didn't tell any of the differences . German is forged baseplate and cnc saddles hardened and the Korean is bent baseplate and die cast saddles . The block is also a different alloy of brass. The German one is far better.

Tip for those who don’t like fine tuners on 1000s not being smooth . You can try to clean threads on fine tuners (for example with floss) and lube them with some teflon lube (MusicNomad or StewMac). They might not feel as smooth as on Original FR, but definitely much smoother than they were before.
@jrg770
@jrg770 Год назад
I have never understood this complaint of not smooth tuners. A little lube and they are fine, How often are people turning them anyhow like it woulds matter. As long as the bridge stays in tune (a sign of the quality) you don't hardly have to use them.

I'd say the complaint is valid if theyre stiff out of the box. You shouldnt have to maintain or lube something up to make it work better when its brand new. Thats called shoddy craftsmanship and shouldnt be acceptable.

You can order a Floyd piece by piece in colors you choose and assemble yourself. They all come with a router template you can order too. The 1,000 has a deeper cut for the pegs and you can tell because they moved the words back on the plate further than the original. To keep this suspension system affordable other companies will license it and not heat treat the steel or powder coat it. You end up with bars that bend and plates that shift, threads that strip and so on.
@hatecrewsix2
@hatecrewsix2 9 месяцев назад
the FR 1000 is good, the base plate is steel but you can upgrade the rest with copies of hardened steel in alliexpress. but the zinc in some pieces did the job because that metal is not under stress. the base plate and the studs are fondamental to keep your instrument tunned. the other pieces are secondary/ otherwise get Gotoh or schaller. the good thing with gotoh you don't need to worry about the studs spacements.

I bought 2 bars for my Floyd rose custom ESP I had made like 27 years ago.. both fit my Ibanez but the diameter on both these bars I ordered are too big around in diameter and doesn't fit my old Custom ESP.Which one do I need the one from the 80s? I don't care if its cheap metal I just need one to fit in the hole on the bridge and I can make it work if it fit in the hole.I already damaged the barrel threads anyway tryna force one of these in it to change the strings and wound up using a big screwdriver to lift the bridge off the body as its bottomed out naturally with no strings on it which worked but I miss using a bar and keep reaching for one that's not there.Anyone have any suggestions which one to buy next? These were cheap anyway from Amazon or Temu, I can't remember where I bought them but they said will fit the Floyd but only fits the Ibanez and the diameter is too big around and doesn't fit the hole on the bridge on my ESP (diameter too big) im open to any n all suggestions..Thank you guys 🙌

I think the hardened steel in both the OG Floyd and the 1000 both probably have the same hardness but I wouldn't be surprised if they recycle parts. Both the 1000 and OG are made with grade 8 steel as opposed to the Floyd Rose Special saddles using grade 5 (which I personally have had break on me). That's really what matters. I have heard of people saying that the blade edges on the 1000 wear out over time as opposed to a Floyd Rose OG but I wonder how many of these people were inexperienced Schecter/ Jackson/LTD owners for example that just didn't adjust the Floyd mounting screws with the strings off and Floyd mounted thus ruining the knife edges because they didn't know any better or if the guitars that earned the Floyd Rose 1000 that reputation because it is in a way more easily obtainable based on the guitars being so popular like the Hellraiser Diamond, Platinum, etc. Series, 1000 Deluxe Series, or the Jackson Pro Series. If those guitars were designed to be value instruments and came with a Floyd 1000, they would have more inexperienced and perhaps a younger audience playing these due to those guitars being so desirable due to price and things. So the expensive OG Floyd also tends to be on high end guitars and custom guitars that people with more experience buy, make and play like ESP Standard Series and Custom Shop. The cheaper younger aimed guitars are naturally going to attract people who can afford the guitars and damage them whereas the higher priced USA Japanese and general custom guitars are more out of reach to less experienced players and owners

Hello, I have an American Charvel guitar, there is a Korean Floyd Rose, the tremolo is practically on the body of the guitar, I practically do not use the thermolo itself, I am wondering whether replacing the Floyd Rose with a better one will affect the sound? Will the tone of the guitar change much? Is it worth changing Floyd Rose for this purpose?

The problem nowadays is that it is almost virtually impossible to buy OFRs and Floyd Rose 1000s online from either Stewmac or Realtone Music, even the Schaller Lockmeister is virtually impossible to buy online now, Floyd Rose seriously needs to sort out his supply disruption issues, Stewmac used to stock the OFR, Floyd Rose 1000, and Lockmeister but every time I've gone to order one it always says "Out Of Stock".

I’ll say, getting a trem stabilizer was a game changer for me too. Floating Floyd are too high precision machines for me. Even with religiously stretching strings, replacing springs, replacing trem arm, I could never fully get along with my Floyd rose 1000, as much as I enjoyed it. However, when I saw Steve Vai was using a trem stabilizer, I got one and i love my Floyd now. I can’t do flutters, but I don’t really care. It’s a one trick pony that doesn’t have many wide musical applications. I love that having a trem stabilizer, I can add a d-tuna/tone vise, more stability, and still pull up on the bar.

Well you're not correct on some info. I can say. Floyd made his first few units in his garage. One went to Eddie Van Halen in 1981, late 81. In 1982 Ed not only endorsed Kramer guitars but was a silent partner. Rockinger was going to be the locking trem Kramer was going with and marketed it in advertising as the Eddie Van Halen Tremolo. However, Ed didn't like the Rockinger and Floyd owned the patent on the locking nut so Kaehler, Rockinger and Washburn tremolos were never going to succeed. Ed suggested to Floyd to put fine tuners on the unit like violins and cellos have. Ed also as Kramer partner got Floyd a marketing deal with Kramer as exclusive. Kramer got the Floyd's manufacturered in Germany under Schaller. Originally Floyd's were only sold by Kramer, I bought a Floyd in 1988 to put on a guitar and it came in Kramer packaging. After Kramer bankrupted in 1989 Floyd then went to Fender exclusive. Late 90s the locking trem was out of fashion and not selling as much. Fender dropped it's contract with Floyd Rose making the Floyd a stand alone product and became The Original Floyd Rose as a business name. The 1000 series was introduced as 80s nostalgia came up in early 2000s. Floyd now has 1000 series on any guitar equipped from factory, they are made in Korea at HIGHER quality specs then German originals as guitar companies do not want warranty issues and replacement costs. Chip Ellis, Master Builder at Fender and EVH, has said the specs are much much tighter then Germany. Schaller does make it's own licensed version but the Floyd Tremolo isn't one patent but many separate ones. Every licensed by Floyd is deliberately not given one or more patent rights so ALL licensed by are not at full pieces, even the type of steel and hardening process is licensed. Schallers have very very poor and replaceable knife edges. Don't get a Schaller. Gotoh and Ping make licensed Floyd that are great but let's but bullsh@*#$ on the table... Eddie Van Halen who helped create the final Floyd Rose system didn't go with gotoh or ping on his EVH brand, or with originals he went 1000 models, they held up better to his abuse.

I have got a korean floyd 1000 on my DBZ Venom. Its never hold stability after "divebomb" and never got back to zero ( minus 17-20 cents after pulling up or bending down). Replaced studs with original Schaller ones. Result is day and night! Korean studs have even different head prifile, longer cavities, more play in the threads. So if you got in trouble with stability buy proper Schaller lockmeister or replace studs with originals . Btw., gold finish is going to wear out in weeks of use as well on korean sh...t.

You can buy a 1000 series in different colors from Floyd Rose and anyone who carries their trems; like Sweetwater or Amazon. I know this, because I had to go looking for a trem on one of my guitars. I have a 1500 and a Gotoh1996 version on my two shredder guitars. The 1500 is what Schecter gets for their top of the line imports. It's a 1000 with a few steel parts that would otherwise be a a slightly softer metal. I highly recommend the Sun Valley Super Shredder Exotic FR if anyone wants to check out the 1500.

If it were just as good, it wouldnt be cheaper...if it were just as good, it wouldnt exist because there would be no point in having two items of the same build and quality in a product line with zero difference between the two. Its logical to say that its cheaper because its inferior, otherwise it simply wouldnt exist because its a more budget friendly option as opposed to the OFR. I also dont personally see the point because paying 250-300 on an OFR is not expensive. Considering how much people spend on premium guitars these days, an OFR is a buy once, cry once option vs a buy and hope option of the 1000 series.

A interesting thing. The Floyd Rose II and lesser seen III. The initial Floyd Rose II was priced like a Original yet it had zinc alloy saddles. I cannot recall what the block was made of but it was manufactured to appeal to more traditional players (meaning Strat and to some degree gibson players) at the time because the zinc alloy gave a warmer tone. In an effort to get that older stubborn crowd to buy into a Floyd Rose. Fender marketed them heavily in the 80's but wound up pairing the ads with the Heartfield Talon Series of guitars. Though it was made by Schaller the current Floyd Rose Special is pretty much those materials. I do not know if the Floyd Rose II had the quality bar and assembly of an original Floyd.
@darrentimken3280
@darrentimken3280 Год назад
To correct things, Kramer was exclusive on selling Floyd's in the 80s, after it's bankruptcy in 89, Floyd Rose went to Fender in the 90s but popularity had weened off from the grunge. Zinc is way more brittle and subject to cracking and flat out breaking and stripping. Zinc was to keep cost down and still get a better quality Tremolo then most licensed ones. Specials are all made in korea

@steampro5282 24 minutes ago (edited) Nick the first Floyd Rose was manufactured by Kahler and the fine tuning mechanism was added by to the Floyd Rose by Gary Kahler not Floyd Rose. Kahler Tremolos manufactured the first American Floyd Rose tremolos for Floyd Rose, including the very first Floyd which did not have fine tuning. Floyd Rose sold out to a group of attorneys and the manufacturing went from Kahler to Schaller because manufacturing cost was less expensive than manufacturing in the U.S.. Floyd Rose eventually went with China (Gotoh) for manufacturing which drastically decreased the quality in the later years, while shooting up the profit for Floyd Rose and allowed them to sell to manufacturers for a lower cost. I'm personal friends with Gary Kahler and there is much more to this story, such as Floyd and Gary were friends and worked together at the Fender Guitar inthe Bridge Division. Gary had to present his fine tuning idea for the Floyd Rose and the Kahler to Gibson Guitars since Gibson held the patent for the fine tuners, the Tune-o-matic. Part of Gibsons deal with Gary Kahler was that the first 500 Kahler Bridges go to Gibson for Gibson Guitars which is why so many vintage 80's Gibson Guitars are fitted with a Kahler. So Schaller is the second manufacturer of the Floyd Rose Tremolo Bridges and that's when Kahler redesigned the Floyd Rose Fulcrum to manufacture the Kahler Spyder Fulcrum. Kahler used a much higher grades of metal than Schaller for the base for one which was very important for intonation and action and recovery of the tuning after a dive, because if the knife edges of the bridge on the studs wears wrong everything will go out which is the most common problem with the new bridges, and the saddles because they are cast in softer inappropriate metals.

Plus it costs 250 dollars, so much cheaper.

Would love to have included some of the annectotal stories of failures in the 1000. Like does the arm loosen up faster? Do the knife edges wear faster? Do the posts wear faster? If you abuse the trem (for example, adjust the height under tensions) would it cause failure on the 1000 as opposed to the Original
@JD-vj4go

I have both and the only difference I've seen is the collar on the 1000 comes loose sooner than the OFR. I've never adjusted height under tension. In terms of use, tuning stability, and life I've never seen a difference. Another minor difference the OFR has slightly larger fine tuner knobs and the threads come with some lubrication and move smoother out of the box. A small amount of lubrication on the 1000 and they are equally smooth.

I can give an anecdote which speaks pretty negatively toward the 1000. I got a new LTD Arrow guitar with a FR1000 and quickly noticed it wasn’t returning to pitch after dives or pull ups. Looked at the posts and noticed one of them is leaning back slightly. Pulled out the term and found that both the knife edges and posts had been scraped up. The black paint had worn off exposing a copper colored surface. And the mounting screw was loose within the post. I’m not sure if the metal surfaces themselves were damaged or just the paint removed, but either way that’s a really bad sign for a brand new bridge in my opinion. And the tuning stability was not ideal, so that’s that. The arm holder also sucked and was loose from the second I put it in.

The only thing I can say bad about the 1000 is that the one I have on my Schecter is that the gray finish fades over time on pretty much any of them I have seen that are more than 5 years old and have been played. I also want to note that the MH1000 I referred to in the previous comment I replaced a very badly damaged Floyd Rose 1000. I believe the previous owner abused it possibly by sticking a trem arm under the actual Floyd Rose Saddle insert screws based on dents around the otherwise very professional looking routing job on the LTD MH1000. The fine tuners on my Original Floyd Rose I used to replace the broken FR 1000 are significantly less tight and sturdy than the ones on my 1000 on my Schecter Hellraiser so based on this experience along with my previous two comments leads me to think that the Floyd Rose 1000 is not only as sturdy as an OG but in my experience sometimes better

@@darrentimken3280 It does effect the intonation. With the angle cut, the saddle can be moved father to the REAR than with the right angle. Often when using thick strings and low tunings (ie Drop D) the 6th string can not be intonated correctly as the saddle needs to be moved father to the rear. It is pure physics. I have over 40 guitars with FR bridges and many different tunings and many times I have had to grind the rear of the FR saddle to get it to move further to the rear to get the intonation set. As to how you determine source of origin, I will deffer to what Floyd said. This has nothing to do with setting intonation on a FR bridge.

I had a schecter with fr special. It needs to be mentioned: the feel of the fine tuners and the fit of the bar are defintiely less precise (on average, each is differentl for the 1000. The bar is also completely painted, unlike the OFR bar which is exposed to metal on the portion that foes into the trem hole itself. I have found the springs on the 1000 are also a lot noisier on average than the OFR. I would suppose it's due to the metal, but "they say" it's the same materials used. Well, try one and you'll see. The blocks are both steel, though. There really needs to be an in depth, one and DONE video to compare the three big Floyds (OFR, Special and 1000).

I'm guessing a lot of these replies are from young players. Prior to 2003 all legal copies of the Floyd with the locking nut and saddles had to be licensed and visibly marked as such. The Patent expired in 2003. Even the ibanez edge bridges had "Licensed under Floyd Rose Patents" written on it. This whole topic is a rabbit hole I went down a few years ago. There are so many variables that need to be considered that an accurate video would take years. Short version ..... Kramer had exclusive rights until they went out of business about 1991..... but even then the fakes where all going crazy copying FR.... to the point that Kramers Floyds actually said "Floyd Rose Original" on the plate . The 1000's that I have are heated and bent into the whale tail, it is clearly visible. The Schaller made OFR is milled to that shape. Over the last 45 years a lot of little things have changed on the Floyds including the fact that Germany produces about 5% of the steel that they used to ....so it's most likely coming from asia. The comment about "Eddie would know" are just dumb. When he went to Ernie Ball he used a Gotoh...then the high end peavey also had Peavey branded Gotohs..... Eddie is quoted as saying he likes the swept back fine tuners on the Gotoh's. Bottom line..... Floyd Rose are still great if you buy a good one, Schaller Lockmeister is identical to the OFR. Schaller's version or (Floyd Rose II) was very popular because you could replace the knife edges for cheap. And the Gotoh 1996T is incredible, also the Gotoh Edge and Edge lo-pro are excellent that is why the biggest abuser of the trem ...Vai has stuck with them for 40 years. Also Ping made a good one for Fender in the 90's for a while. I don't know what Floyd was charging for licensing.... But he held on to that for a long time..... in order to keep your patents you have to take legal action every time someone infringes on it. In the end it's just guitar players being brand snobs as usual... we are all weird that way. "If Schaller's QC was up to par I would use them instead of Gotoh"....John Suhr

There is no debate over the materials used for the OFR versus the 1000. They're in fact made of the same hardened steel through and through and that's the claim on the website, which subjects them to legality via the claim. The differences are the nuts height and all you would have had to do was call Floyd Rose in Florida and ask. The Floyd Rose Specials are SPOT hardened steel for the base plates with zinc saddles and zinc sustain blocks. Other than that, they're good for tg he price point an owning an actual FR product that you can get quality replacement parts for via the website under the 1000 series parts tab. All it takes is dropping an email or a phone call to get the proper information instead of spreading rumors of materials bro. Pro tip- R3 nut , there's a few choices for R3 , how do you figure out which one you need? Measure your string spacing, that's it. You can always shim if you're a little short on height. Hope that helps you and your viewers.

Floyd D. Rose? Ya mean Floyd? Floyd was a jeweler in the 70s and was designing the trem prototype in 1976... for himself and his own guitar. His first artist to play one of his earliest prototypes was Ed Van halen in late late 1978. Ed put the proto into use in Jan of '79 on a quick Japan tour trek. It was Ed's input on the prototype that led to a redesign and the addition of the fine tuners as Ed didn't like that he couldn't tweak it onstage like the Rockinger trem that had the fine tuners. Ed had a lot to do w that design w Floyd. It was also Ed who got the deal for Floyd w Dennis Berardi and Kramer Guitars when Ed signed on w Kramer inlate 82 early 83. Ed received little public credit from Floyd for the design and for the Kramer deal. As usual, Ed's innovating and constant tinkering shifted the guitar gear landscape from early on.

I believe that the only difference between the 1000 and the original are the studs. Original come with those big screw on studs and the 1000 usually studs screws into a jacket and you mount the jacket into the guitar. Thats were the tuning issue stem from. The jacket is what causes issues with tuning issues. So you could mount the original screws on a guitar and put the 1000 on it and it will perform on par with the original.

Although you can't buy a 1000 Series whole, Floyd Rose will sell it to you as a collection of replacement parts, since you can buy every little part direct... FR Told me if I wanted to upgrade my Special to the quality of a 1000 Series, the difference is really in the saddles and block. The saddles and bloc on the Special version are made of zinc, which is not as durable. But all FR Special parts are interchangeable with 1000 Series parts... I don't fall into the camp that believes the German built ones are better quality steel. There's nothing backing that up, I've looked for evidence. It's more just the myth that German made must equal better. Gear geeks love their myths. Also, probably a lot of people try a FR Special and assume that represents the peek quality of the Asian built FR product, it does not.

If you know how to do a proper setup of the tremolo(s) you will be fine. A couple GLARING mistakes. With the exception of the first few OFRs Floyd made himself, EVERY OFR Trem has been made by Schaller in Germany. Also, Kramer was the first to be permitted to fit the bridge at the factory and acted as distributor for retail and other manufacturers to buy from. Later Fender did the same. Kramer, in the 1980s, did not use the 1000 series as it did not exist. The 1000 series came much later to give OEMs a "real" Floyd Rose bridge to put on their more budget minded instruments, rather than using the "Licensed by" bridges out in the market. The Chinese made by Ping ones fit a similar niche, but for even less expensive models. The short answer to which one to buy as an upgrade is, if it's not made in Germany, it is NOT an upgrade to anything on the market.

@@darrentimken3280 all licensed tremolos aren’t created equally the original edge and lo pro are every bit as reliable as a FRO , I prefer the saddles on the edge. The original edges were made by Gotoh for Ibanez. The German made Schallers are probably the best quality of the “originals” you can get now. I don’t think that the Floyd branded originals are of the same quality as they used to be, so for me at least a gotoh is just as good and for me more comfortable under the hand , I don’t know what either company uses for the locking blocks in their saddles but anything short of SS or titanium will eventually fail. Dime’s tech said he was always replacing cracked locking blocks on Dime’s originals until he started using better ones from someone like FU Tone. I don’t think Suhr would sacrifice quality on a 3,000 dollar guitar to save what? Maybe 100 dollars by the time it all shakes out. 100 dollars isn’t going to make or break a buyer looking at 3,000 dollar guitars . Suhr also uses Wilkinson for the Vintage style bridges and I believe some of them have the Wilkinson/Gotoh bridge. I can see for a really small builder wanting to save every dime they can, also I can see how a massive manufacturer will sacrifice quality to save a nickel per unit ( I work in manufacturing ask me why Ford Powerstrokes had exhaust leaks and the international/Navistar version of the same engine didn’t) I just don’t think Suhr would use the Gotoh if it wasn’t excellent, I know from personal experience that the Edge bridges are rock solid and reliable. I’m not trying to tell you that a Harley Benton is just is good as a Gibson, but I would be willing to say that some Tokai are just as good or better than Gibsons. I don’t have any skin in the game. I’m just trying to help anyone out who might be dealing with an unreliable Licensed FR and think their only option is a 300 dollar original. I’m sure Suhr takes costs into consideration but I don’t think they would sacrifice quality they have too good a name. I see Jackson and other manufacturers putting the FR1000 or whatever on 2000 plus guitars and they are saving a chunk of money, but if I’m paying that much for a guitar unless it’s decked, I would prefer a Gotoh or Schaller to the 1000 . I realize Eddie was using Floyd’s prototypes and is probably the reason Kramer had an exclusive deal for a while, the only way you were getting a FR was on a Kramer or one someone had removed from a Kramer. Eddie didn’t play imports with FR specials on em though. Fender is trying to make a guitar that looks like Ed’s and I think they do a fine job but they make thousands of them so on the low side savings of 50 dollars a unit is huge for them, but no one is going to complain about a 500 dollar guitar with a special not staying in tune. People would however be raising hell if their 3k Suhr wouldn’t return to pitch. Maybe I’m romantic but I think there’s still a small niche of people who take great pride in their work and wouldn’t sacrifice a little profit for their reputation and I think that’s where the boutiques like Suhr set maybe hopefully at least. You can still buy a Suhr for less than a Fender custom shop, so in a way it’s a better value and I don’t suspect Fender cuts corners on their custom shops and master built but they have a ton more over head than Suhr. I don’t know if my rambling makes much sense but what I’m trying to say is not every tremolo Floyd Rose makes is world class and also not every licensed FR is garbage.

FR1000 metal is really soft comparing to German ones. I have seen many Floyds in my life and 1000/2000.1500 all have softer metal.

Hi. I really enjoy your videos, man. But can you explain why companies make the most boring shit ever? Why aren’t there any satin gold Floyd roses on any production models? Also lack of single pickup guitars and no interesting ideas almost at all!

30 years of touring, and the OFR is a tank, everything else is shit.. i've blown through 1000 floyds in a month of touring, they just don't hold up, stay in tune etc...the Schaller and gotoh are good if you get the top end ones
