We recently tackled a challenging issue with a large solar installation featuring 72 (245-watt) ‪@CanadianSolarInc‬ panels and a total of 15 kW inverter capacity. 🌅 At peak times, one of the inverters would mysteriously shut down. After a thorough inspection-checking everything from the junction box to individual panel connections-we discovered the culprit: leaking transformer oil in the inverter, contaminated with water and debris, causing shorts.
🎥 Watch our latest video to see how we diagnosed and resolved this solar puzzle. Plus, learn why we recommended upgrading to the newer, transformerless Tesla Solar inverters for enhanced performance and reliability.

Mineral oil is dielectric

With regard to an oil fire putting itself out inside the inverter cabinet because its air-tight. That is not really true, those inverters have a forced air, radial cooling fan with an intake and exhaust on opposite sides of the inverter enclosure. While it may very well be true that the flammability of oil may be low enough that it is mostly self extinguishing, its not because of air starvation. More likely that the fire destroys the PCB and current stops flowing so the electronics stop acting like a source of ignition.

So what actually happens is the dielectric mineral oil breaks down over time and losses some of its non-conductive properties, it also can become contaminated with water and particles. The combination of these things creates a short which can cause a fire, without a simulated situation that’s controlled and monitored it’s hard to say how or what extinguishes the fire when it occurs. Please keep in mind this is very rare, and I’ve only seen three or four inverters that have caught fire.
