This is part of why Billy always talks down abut D'Arcy and James as musicians because his version of perfection was so much higher than others and why he played most if not all of the string parts on the early albums. The only reason he did not have issue with Chamberlin was because Billy is not a very good drummer by his own admission so he was always fond of Jimmy as a musician.

4:41 I've listened to this song on the record at least 1000 times and have always been amazed by the guitar. I've read Billy/Butch layered something 40 guitar tracks together to make this solo - some of which used an E-bow. I'm super impressed with how well he played it here, live, with a single guitar.
There are two guitars and some effects that are helping get that sound, but it comes down to the fact that Billy and James are great guitarists and play well together.
I sometimes wonder if artists like this had a clear understanding of the timeless impact of what they were doing...I doubt it. I love my life more for songs like this.
Best live performance they ever did this one night. It was strange, like the moon and stars aligned just right for everybody in the band and sound engineers.
In terms of early era Pumpkins, this rendition is actually extremely tepid. Every other recorded version of Soma from 93/94 that I've seen is better than this. Billy is supposed to scream just before he begins the guitar solo at the climax of the song, and in this version he not only omits the scream but the entire vocal crescendo: "To anyone lost, anyone but you". Additionally, the guitar solo in this version is weak and passionless compared to all the others. Peter Boyer I would hope it’s who is playing it....the problem is, James for most of the discography is just a Session Player...I’d hate to use the word “Sadly”...bc the tunes probably wouldn’t have been recorded the same if he had more an equal way
@@Oh_I_Will This is one of the few songs credited as Corgan/Iha. James contributed greatly to both this and Mayonnaise. You know Billy isn’t giving a writing credit away for just a little idea here and there. James was integral to the composition of this song. I happen to think Iha is a great writer: He had a hand in writing the two best songs on Siamese Dream in Mayonnaise and Soma. One of the best songs on Pisces Iscarot in Blew Away. Two absolutely amazing b-sides from Mellon Collie: Said Sadly (sad acoustic duet) The Boy (one of the best power pop songs ever).
Soma has to be my favorite SP song. It contains all the elements that make the band great. Dreamy melodies, hard rock, shredding, intense lyrics. You couldn't ask for a more perfect song In my opinion.
Soma and Mayonaise have always been my 2 favourite songs from Siamese Dream and probably between all SP songs. With the addition of Thru The Eyes Of Ruby from Mellon Collie.

Billy's performance in this entire show and especially during this song shows how damn talented he and the rest of the band is/was. Loved this album when it came out and still do today.
I miss concerts like this it was no issue to jump up on stage, rock out for a sec, and then dive off the stage, and get carried around in the crowd. Miss these days

It sounds pretty much like the record. Great live band they were. I love how Soma keeps building up to the big release. Great dynamics. I definitely have to get the Siamese Dream vinyl.
Still my favourite Pumpkins song. I love the big stuff like Today, Quiet, Zero, Bullet, Disarm etc, but this is the one I always finish with, I always find myself coming back to this one.
Re-discovered the Pumpkins one of these days, after listening to them up and down in the 90s. I'm blown away once again by the greatness of the Siamese Dream songs...clearly one of the best rock albums ever. And Billy on guitar!? Oh my...most underrated shredder I can think of.
Show some respect. The dude practically recorded the entire album by himself (minus drums of course). I don't get people who write a band off because of the vocals, which is just a fragment of the process. There's tons of mediocre singers throughout rock. You're too shallow to understand the greatness of this.
I'm 20 and I don't listen to anything but music like this. I love it. It has more meaning. There was no internet publicity back then. Even pop music came more from the heart. Today's music is absolutely horrible, and I am blessed that I have a mind and soul that can understand this music.
This is one of those few albums where you don't listen to a track or two. You listen to the entire thing, every time. One of my personal top 5 albums of all time. Nobody makes music this way anymore.

I've seen a lot of concerts since about 1990, and I saw Smashing Pumpkins in 1994 when they were in Lollapalooza. Bar none the best band I've ever seen live.
What an amazing comment. I listen to this song and it brings me back 12 yrs. ago, if not more. I get this feeling of overwhelming comfort and joy. Such feel good music, that will never die.
I definately agree. I have the siamese dream tattoo on the middle of my chest. Im 42 , its one of my oldest tattoos. This song is the anthem meaning of relational intimate brwakdown and the end of a loving relationship. Tuis song to tbis day brings a tear or teo to my eyes. I love playing it on guitar
