I've realized my old minimalist modular synth video is a bit outdated, and a few things have changed and some modules have stayed the same. Maybe the modules that have stayed are the best modules? Who knows, they are to me since they've lasted this long haha. I find that a good complex sequencer and mixer in rack really open up more options. Love Marbles and Acid Rain for random modulation. Plaits is super awesome voice module as it does a lot.

My two cents is to not get sucked into these types of videos. One of the best ways to learn without buying is to study how Mark Verbos patches. His verbos system is designed extremely well, and it will really drag your brain through the modular dirt to understand what is actually possible with an open modular based system. From there you can decide what palettes and timbres and filters you want (get a VC filter bank like the Addac603 paired with a scanning mixer imho), but built only a really solid base that ideas are bursting from

I love watching your stuff's. I'm getting back into the Synth world, after not touching a keyboard/Drum machine, or anything actually. It's been 24 year's. I'm trying to get my 2 boy's into it. Or it could be a mid life crisis 😵‍💫. Got us a circuit, keystep 37, a couple volcas. The Sample 2 and the FM. I'm learning load's watching u, BoBeat's, LOOPOP and Gabe. My DAMM Bro 😵‍💫🤔 u just lost me when you started taking technical haha. Still Loved watching it though. And that accent at the end was Sweeeet 💪👊👊👊🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😎🙏

One nice thing I was surprised to learn about the Desmodus Versio AFTER picking one up is that it can load any of the Versio firmwares, effectively turning it into a semi-fixed reflashable multi-module. There are currently three firmwares available (delay, reverb, VCA stuff) and I read that NE is planning at least 26 (though who knows if / when they will be released). Was stoked to learn that my $300 fancy reverb was suddenly a lot more than just that.

Bought a Moog M32 a few years back bc I wanted an old-school mono synth + I thought if I ever start with modular (which I shouldn't, it's waay too expensive), it's a nice starting point. I bought an M.I. Plaits but still wasn't sure if modular was really for me and I didn't know what general direction I would like to go in with such a synth. Enter your modular videos... They really sold me on modular and my current system is heavily inspired by them. I started with a palette case + μmidi + steppy 1U. For the rest I added some stuff I liked but between those I added a clep diaz and the WMD MMF (which I especially love!) Still saving up for the mimetic and I'm thinking about swapping one of the 1U's with the Noise Tools 1U + a Pam's new workout as the new brain of the system. Anyways my point was... You cost me a lot of money Ricky :( Just kidding ofc! Love your video's and I always get excited when I see you dropping one of the Eurorack video's. Keep on doing what you're doing!

You're kinda correct on the expense thing, but it's sort of the point - if you consider that you can't get everything you need right now for a patch idea, it forces you to use your thought process to decide what the next investment is. It's a left-brained activity that takes patience and helps you learn what functionality a module truly gives you before getting too overwhelmed, while also unlocking the potential to branch into other patch ideas opening new creative ground. For example, using multiple cv-controlled envelopes to trigger sample and hold through a quantizer is an awfully cool way to generate variably timed melodic content rather than trying to find some one-thing-does-all solution that actually doesn't really do what you want it to do. I've found that the simple per-function modules that Doepfer makes are the best bang for the buck despite being high cost per HP - but I am really a knob per function kind of guy and don't give myself the time to sort through the tedium of microprocessor based modules that require too much effort to use.

An example: Nothing bad about Clouds, but when I took it out of my case to lend it to my best friend, my music turned better. This because it makes me concentrate more on caring for and making my other modules do honest work. Comparable to visual arts in that some of the best works are done with only a pencil and paper. So maybe I should go further and replace my gear with a on string instrument or a flute with only one hole? I like the term brain bandwidth btw.

Hey Ricky! Have you ever tried out the super synthesis 20PFM? It's somewhere between a drum voice and a mono synth. Super crazy sounds for 75$. I got one to compare to the basimilus iteras alter but it does some very different things. Lots of buchla type percussion vibes. I highly recommend it.

Looooving your stuff Ricky!! Question for you, I have four pocket operators (33, 32, 128, and 137) and am looking for something to start in to modular things for hip hop specifically. Any recommendations for the simplest starter? Was wondering about one of the moogs... m32 or dfam? Or maybe those lpzw adapters? I was hoping to be able to sequence on the POs, but I probably do need a separate sequencer? *More of a multi-question... soz

Man, it’s wild to me that the MD doesn’t have a proper quantizer in it given that shred will populate random values. I guess you can’t fit everything in one module but who isn’t gonna need a quantizer paired with that if they’re using it for any pitch sequencing?!

You've fallen victim to one of the classic blunders (of modular synths). The most famous is never get involved in an oscillator war on the internet. But only slightly less well known is this; never go in against a modular user when new modules are on the line... XD

bigger case is mandatory- I don't like small cases too limiting. Doepfer monster cases are great for travel they have covers and handles and put on cart and easy to haul places patched.

Hey so I want to build a eurorack synth that plays around with the idea of using Ableton's CV tools and something like Expert Sleepers FH-2 can I build the synth this way without Envelope Generators and LFOs since ableton will be generating those out or is it a good idea to use those modules anyway?

So depending on how you implement it (via midi or another solution) you could run into issues with resolution and speed. One of my favorite things in eurorack is modulating with audio rate signals, which MIDI is nowhere near fast enough for. The FH-2 can generate it's own lfos and envelopes, which probably get around this issue, but interaction on that module is such that I want to set it to a certain setting and leave it there. I want my envelopes to be performable, at the very least having a dedicated knob for decay. I think you can probably use ableton for lots of the slower or unchanging modulations, but having a dedicated envelope at the very least I think is necessary.

@@blaaaaaaaaaaaaargh I have an fh-2 but have really only used it for midi to cv and clocking. I think it would be fine for most normal lfo/adsr uses. Also you can program the adsr stages to respond to midi cc's so you can have knobs on your midi controller adjust them. I think it is a good start. If you find yourself wanting you can always get a maths!

MIDI is generally not fast enough for envelopes, so you wouldn't be generating / sending the envelopes from Ableton to FH-2, per se. But FH-2 can generate it's own envelopes and LFOs internally, and you can modulate them via MIDI sent from Ableton. No need for CV Tools for that. Personally I like more hands on control of my envelopes and am happy to dedicate the HP to quality envelope modules (with CV control to allow automating the modulations). CV Tools would be used with something like the ES-3 or ES-40, if your audio interface has the ADAT or SPDIF outputs for it, or the ES-8 or ES-9 if you have a Mac (or are willing to use a module as your sole audio interface on Windows).

The quantizing stuff yeah, but you are stuck within a few scales instead of being able to select individual notes and there’s no sequencer onboard the 2hp

I think Cay nails it, and to me i often change what scale i'm using randomly and i'd hate to have to "upload" new scales and take apart the case or something. Same thing goes with the Pico Scales or something like that

Can someone please pinpoint where the "amazing" sounds this type of gear can produce is, in this , or any other video on these "modules". A friend of mine has recently bought into this lifestyle and told me about how great this stuff is but is too shy to send me some sonic examples..so I thought I'd take a look for myself and all I've seen so far is either someone turning a knob on a filter over a repetitive bleep or eulogising about the potential of putting wires here and there to some effect. Frankly, I think there's some kid-ology going on here. Where's the beef?!

There are a ton of amazing artists using modular. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is my favorite, Suzanna Cianni is a legend, and on RU-vid, guys like Lightbath, Ann Annie, r beny, and Hainbach all make great music. Of course, if you don't like ambient electronic or techno music, you probably won't like ambient electronic or techno music made with modular synthesizers. Everything isn't for everyone.

@@methyod Thanks for the reply...taste in styles doesn't come into it so far as my comment /criticism goes. I am just a keen enthusiast ever on the look out for ear grabbing sounds and notice with these lavish interconnected units that there is absolutely nothing fresh or even remotely original sounding coming out of the expense. Highlighted by the shy response of my friend who also eulogised about how "amazing" this sort of kit is, without forwarding any examples of new or even interesting sonic ground. This seems to extend to the examples pasted over youtube except that at least those posting their results are posting them. I hear nothing exciting I'm afraid. Bear in mind I'm someone who would go to Orbit every week in the 90s so I know an hilarious juxtaposition of beat and noise or just exciting noise when I hear it. As I stated ...this gear fetishism strikes me as a lot of kid-ology. Nice for the manufactures, though!
