I was in college when it came out and friends with a guy who didn't like hip-hop. Played 1999 one day while we were in my dorm, and I swear it was all I heard him playing for months. 😆
I honestly feel like he couldn’t capture that sound and vibe again. Summer knights was cool but his albums are unfortunately All but forgotten for me. I always like Joey but yea 1999 was his magna opus.

Man a kid named cudi was a game changer for me, he was so diverse and went over so many different type of production and had a song for every mood i played that so much in high school it was really magical return of 4 eva, is krit at his finest, just elevated what a mixtape can be in my eyes, this is album worthy cult classic music I could go on, but yeah the waters, 1999 and shout out to pac div and the cool kids, xv, and searching sylvia
Glad bezzy mentioned the chittlin circuit by little brother but I’m surprised none of the Bar Exams by Royce got a mention! For me the first one is my favourite
Juicy J - Blue Dream and Lean Tbh, Juicy J had pretty good mixtape run with Blue Dream and Rubba Band Business during the early to mid 2010s. Blue dream and lean and Rubba Band Business 1 & 2 stayed in rotation during my high school years 💯

Boldy James - Trappers Alley Pros and Cons got me into Boldy way back when. Lots of dope tracks on there: JIMBO, I Sold Dope All my Life, Home Invasion and so many more
Dope convo! Took me down memory lane. 1999 is great, but sometimes I love Summer Knights and PEEP: The aPROcalypse just as much honestly. Others I really like are Friday Night Lights, which to me is still Cole's best body of work, Faces, 4eva N a Day and Overly Dedicated. Others that I can still enjoy though to a lesser degree now are Kush and OJ, So Far Gone, Comeback Season, Acid Rap, Young Sinatra III, Innanetape and Earl. People in the comments reminded me how good Nostalgia, Ultra was and early A$ap.

ELmatic the GOAT mixtape and Elzhi 1 of the GOAT Cambatta, Tonedeff, Locksmith, Eminem, Lloyd Banks, Nino Bless, Lupe, Joey Badass, 50Cent, Canibus, Cole, Droog, Mickey Factz, Jay Elec, Diabolic, Little Brother, Jadakiss, Budden, Royce, Crooked and on and on. Shocked how few actual spitters they listed. Shocked Detroit dude who loves Detroit lyricism/emcees didn’t list ELmatic. Insane to me. For no one to list it is insane to me. ILL live instrumentation & ILL lyricism. No Elzhi? Royce? Em? Shady Records with Em G-Unit etc? Crooked? Jadakiss? Droog? Budden MM series (I’m not even a big fan of Joe like that either)? Cambatta? Locksmith? On and on and on. The most shocking names not dropped was Elzhi & Royce though.
Power of the Dollar was not a mixtape. It was originally going to be his debut album under Columbia Records but they shelved it and dropped 50 after he got shot.
The first mixtape i've ever listened to was Exmilitary by Death Grips. What an amazing experience i had from this mixtape and is what made me become a hip hop fan and that was back in 2014 or 2015. But my actual favorite mixtape currently is Live.Love.ASAP by ASAP Rocky. That whole mixtape is a masterpiece.
