Good choice to react to. Tiny Desk has amazing audio engineers, so this is hearing her under ideal circumstances. And you get a really good picture of how theatrical she is here. She's (deliberately) playing a bit of a character here. Not just the makeup and wig, but the mannerisms and the humor she's using in the talking bits. As you gradually watch her in concert footage, like at Bonaroo, you'll see that she's sometimes more practical with her costumes, and her demeanor is a bit different. But with TV appearances (like on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, or The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) she's elaborate, like on the Tiny Desk. Then there's a third version of her in interviews, where she's less Chappell and more Kayleigh Rose Amstutz. We're in good company being impressed by her. She's Elton John's favorite current artist. He basically said that to her face recently.
He pretty much became Brandi Carlile's mentor in the aughties. Anyone who's never seen her Grammys live performance of the Joke, please do. I've seen Brandi twice, Chappell 2 months ago. Sir Elton knows how to pick 'em.
I love Tiny Desk Concerts. Live performance and minimal engineering, but with excellent production. Basically the rule is you can only use who and what you can fit behind the tiny desk (although I've seen creative solutions with the larger bands), and you leave a souvenir for the background. She gives them her iconic wig, of course. This is one of the best that I can recall, but some of my other favorites are "They Might Be Giants" (vastly underrated band with a cult following), "T Pain", (Suprising voice without this iconic autotune), "Gwar" (so surreal) and "Cypress Hill". Two of the most... unusual... were Andrew W.K. and Ssingssing. So many bands that you can lose SO much time in that rabbit hole.
glad you enjoyed this, and i even more glad you’ve discovered tiny desk! truely a gem. Highly recommend RAYES tiny desk performance, who’s someone if my memory serves me right you’ve reacted to. She brings a richness to her live music you just can’t capture in a recording studio. and if you like hers - jorja smiths is another who i absolutely adore, but i’m not sure if your familiar with her music. definitely a good first introduction though!
Ah, I wish you had your eyes open at the end of Red Wine Supernova to see how wonderfully Chappell's backup singer Mia was also going off 😍 I also love your cover of Coffee 🥰😭🥰😭🥰😭
@@nickthepeasant I did see the feels coming on 😂 I don't blame you. Just a little nugget for you to revisit the last minute or so to see the incredible back and forth between the two 🥰 Your covers are so delicate and heartfelt. Such a celebration of music. Please do keep adding them when you get a chance 😊
Oh yeah, Tiny Desk Concerts are a big thing! Taylor Swift did a lovely one for a few tracks from her Lover album, Adele's was phenomenal, Florence and the Machine's was frikking gorgeous. Obviously so was Hozier's. It's a staple like doing a BBC Radio Live Lounge session. You are going to LOVE them when you get into some of your favourite artists 🥰
I’d love to see your reaction to Tash Sultana’s Tiny Desk… also a member of the LGBTQ+ community… the joy of watching her perform is transcendent. She doesn’t just make music, she makes love to it ❤
Love Tiny Desk and your reactions. Pick your favorite artists and react to theirs. But you can also discover excellent talent- I’ll recc BANKS since I’m obsessed with her but no one knows her :-(
