When they introduced the friendly faction of machines and explained how they settled their differences, I remember thinking to myself that is so fascinating that I'm surprised that's not the subject of this movie. It's very much a film in search of a conflict at times. Kind of the movie equivalent of booting up a video game you already beat and wrapping up some loose end side quests.

I feel that's just obvious. It's always been a really stupid argument saying "technology is ruining everything" when technology can literally be used to improve ANY VERSION OF LIFE STYLE YOU CHOSE. Technology can improve literally anything that's what it does, it's how it's used and by who that defines it's aspects. People not even comprehending good technology is a testament to both their stupidity and the evil of our actual reality.

The one part I liked about NPH's character was they at least explained why they basically needed to cause stress for the humans because it increased power output, which explains things like social media and people being attached to their phones...but the fact that that no machine before him figured that out when, machines are logical so clearly they would have experimented to figure out ways to increase output earlier. It kind of is a microcosm of the whole movie, some really good ideas on the surface that just aren't fully realized in the end. There is a lot here, it just wasn't executed well enough.

I got the impression they didn't do it earlier because they had enough power output from what they were doing before the peace treaty. They already redesigned the matrix to make it more depressing and add more suffering and that was working for them (Smith mentioned this in the first film). But 60years later, the loss of powerplants, they then redesigned the matrix. Think of it like placing higher capacity batteries in a mobile I guess haha

@andrewshandle
@andrewshandle 2 года назад
@@RU-vidHandleEtc. but the machines have emotions, we have seen this in both the first matrix movie and the Animatrix...but that's besides the point. Machines who used people as their batteries would notice that in some scenarios that they produced more energy and sometimes produced less, then they'd look at things like brainwaves and pretty quickly figure out that certain brain functions causes the "batteries" to be more efficient. They're machines after all. I agree they'd never say "Hey, let's try to make them feel emotions and see what happens", it'd be the exact opposite. They'd find times when energy output was high and they've reverse engineer it to figure out why.

I think the thing about CGI isn't that it's just getting better (though it certainly is), it's that a higher and higher percentage of movies are CGI. There's less incongruity between a digital element (say, nano-tech Iron Man) and the environment around it when that environment is largely, if not entirely, digital.
@blindfire3167
@blindfire3167 2 года назад
Yeah, it's just much easier now to use CGI/Unreal Engine 5 w/ screens than to build an entire set, and with the increasing processing power and new software that render simulations much quicker, it gives more time for artists to put in things that they couldn't even 3 years ago. Definitely makes it easier to sell when everything around is CGI compared to having a set and adding in CGI elements that don't react to the ground/sky/foilage/lighting/etc nearly as well as having it all CGI.

A certain aesthetic to the original Matrix was lost over the trilogy, and totally absent now. The cars, the tech, the phones, everything felt timeless and built the world up. Reloaded was just latex and Chrysler concept cars.
@The_ScapeGoat
@The_ScapeGoat 2 года назад
Yes! The grit was already gone by reloaded. The old school pay phones and dirty environment felt like the matrix took place in a forgotten dusty corner of Chinatown. It felt nostalgic like nior, then it blended that with its cyber goth/ steam punk look. It was truly a unique and original experience. Then in Reloaded, they're in ritzy restaurants, an ornate chateau in the mountains, the cheesy reality of everyone wearing leather trench coats and sunglasses had already been parodied to death. That noir aesthetic was completely forgotten and is the main thing that separates the original film from all of its lackluster predecessors.

Imagine Keanu Reeves and Hugo Weaving, partners at the company, each has their own story strand of questioning their reality/learning who they are, and neither of them are sure how much the other one knows. Tension crescendos into an action set piece that ends in Neo being pulled out of the matrix by the new crew to save his life. Then Agent Smith gets a B plot similar to the motivation they gave him - to kill the Analyst to prevent another reboot, whilst the A plot follows Neo and his new rogue crew on a Trinity rescue mission. The plotlines intersect at the finale with a huge kung fu fight, three on one, Smith, Neo, and Trinity against the Analyst. What happens to Smith at the end? Idk, leave it open.

I wish this was one of those movies that really made you question what's real and what isn't / is he going crazy or is it actually happening - then in the 3rd act you go hard into the Matrix and see Tom (maybe as an insane god) fulfill the promise of 'the one' and actually "do anything he wants" besides really kind of plain superpowers (speed, strength, flying). The underlying messages I got from the movie were 1. Illusion of choice. They say it a few times, like "its you're choice" then "it really isn't a choice is it" things like that. 2. Binary. A bit odd of a theme since the director is non-binary but the product Neo is working on is called Binary. IO is Zion minus the Z and N making is IO or 1 and 0 (one and zero) which is binary. Then you have Neo not being The ONE by himself but with Trinity thus a binary situation. Neo being The ONE and perhaps Trinity being The ZERO. It doesn't appear to be Yin and Yang since that would incorporate opposites to the point of Good and Evil.

@c187rocks
@c187rocks 2 года назад
That opening takes place in a modal Neo made at some point shortly before the start of the movie. A modal is just a sandbox environment that's separate from production code in real life. In the film, it's implied that the modal is a mix of the game and the old matrix code that Neo wrote. It is also suggested that Neo ran the modal in a loop, which appears to be Lana's way of saying it was also machine learning training. That's backed up by new Morpheus talking about learning and growing from the Agent Smith and Morpheus sides of himself. So since all of that took place in the modal it can be assumed that Neo changed the looks of everyone else inside of it to help the new Morpheus grow. That would also be why when Neo is shown images from his game they look like the old movies because that's production code.

The modal at the beginning is not the game trilogy that he made. The live action shots we see later on are the game franchise. That's why Tiffany thinks Trinity looks like her and her bot family laugh it off. For ease of explanation here I'm going to refer to the Matrix from the first trilogy as Version 6 and the Matrix in Resurrection as Version 7. While inside V7, Thomas Anderson is working at a game studio called Deus Machina and they are producing a game called Binary. In his spare time, he works on his own little side projects which he builds apparently using the code that was used to build V6. Since he was the One and could manipulate V6 at will, it makes sense that he is well versed in coding 'modals' in V6 code. He produces these reality loops which are used to train the artificial intelligence that he's creating inside this code. The modal we see at the start of the game is used to train the ai creation that is a mix of Agent Smith and Morpheus. However, because the project is also inside the Matrix V7 (think of it like a game inside a game, like being able to NES games in Animal Crossing) the people in the real world are able to see his sections of 'old code' when looking at V7 and are able to enter it, since it's made of Matrix V6 code and can handle the minds of humans in the same way as V7. The characters in that modal are not the same characters necessarily as the characters in his Matrix games. The modal is just an experiment. Bugs essentially cuts the program of Morpheus/Smith from the modal and pastes it into V7, which is why the program goes missing from the modal and Thomas sees the error message on his computer where he was running the modal. Remnants from the last Matrix versions always linger, in much the same way as in the original trilogy, Version 1 had become their Heaven, and Version 2 had become their Hell. Version 6 seems to now be a game engine inside Version 7.

Honestly, I think many matrix fans just try to see this movie as something it isn't. And I say this as a matrix fan myself, I even like the third movie. Yes, the philosophy aspect was a huge part of the matrix franchise, but I think this time people just try to use it as a cover for the dumb parts. "The action is bad because it's a critique of the new action movies", nah, it was just underwhelming for a matrix movie. It was just bad. I'm not gonna list all of them, but if you can find a bad thing about this movie, you can also find someone saying "oh, no, it's actually a critique." No, it's not, it's just bad. The critiques are not subtle at all, they are pretty heavy-handed actually, and I think even they were not executed very well. I saw some people saying things like "it's a love letter to the fans", nah, it's a soulless cash grab, if not a middle finger to the fans. And I also saw things like "they could make a perfect movie but they chose to subvert fans' expectations." Like, what? Nobody expected a new matrix movie. Certainly, nobody expected a perfect movie. Did they just create expectations to subvert them? Wow, okay. And I think that's as good as they can make at this point. I don't think Warner Bros and Wachowskis have the ability to make the perfect movie the fans would want. One review made me laugh especially, I saw a guy saying "people will realize how good this movie is after a decade, just like the original Matrix." First of all, the original matrix was an instant hit. People didn't "realize how good it is after a decade". First Matrix made 460 million dollars, adjusted for inflation it's like 770 million USD. Matrix Reloaded made like 740 million dollars, adjusted for inflation it's like 1.1 billion USD. Those are not figures that underappreciated movies would make. Even if you don't remember or are too young to know about the matrix craze back then, you can see that matrix was received well right from the start, because it was a good movie. Besides, I hate that "rick and morty fan" mentality that suggests you have to have a high level of intelligence to appreciate a movie. If it's bad, it's bad. People don't think it's bad just because they're dumb.

I was fine with the critique of remakes, etc. But it was so intent on explaining how bad forced sequels are that it doesn’t actually subvert expectations at all. It just showcases that a traditional ‘studio’ franchise reboot would have actually been much better. If they one upped modern Hollywood by critiquing it and then having a wholly innovative, creative take on how to do it well, then they would be proving themselves right. But they actually made me side with WB on this one. That a sequel made by a legitimately interested new team and made as just an obvious and traditional sequel would have actually been significantly better. But they deconstruct the franchise but to no point and don’t do anything with the pieces they took apart to analyze. Wow that just blew my mind. Fascinating insight, never thought of that. What goes over peoples heads is the concept of reincarnation. Which is essentially a soul who is stuck in a loop an endless cycle of birth, life, death, heaven, hell, limbo etc. The only way to escape is to detach from all material possessions because even “love” is an illusion. Love itself is just a form of code like hope. I believe the previous anomalies before Neo ascended to the higher realms of consciousness because they chose to end their suffering of personal attachments. However neo chose trinity over self preservation. He chose love over purpose. Purpose being the function of the one is to return to the source. Neo failed to do this in reloaded. So resurrections is a story about reincarnation going through the same loop but learning new tricks in every life or simulation. I really like the idea that if one is emotionless it gives them more efficiency in skills or abilities. It’s like running too programs on your laptop tablet pc or phone. Too many applications and the device works slower!!

I feel like there’s a lot to this film that needs more unpacking, but it did really resonate with me as a lifelong fan of the matrix franchise, and I think the film is broadly a response to the intensely personal nature of the first set of films (the many trans themes, the way the action is pieced together as a pastiche of everything the wachowskis thought was cool, all of the broader mix of philosophical concepts) and how that clashes with the films coopting by the studios that owned them. It’s for this reason that I don’t really like the idea of anyone else doing anything with the matrix, because I think the series is just such an intimate reflection of its creators, that cutting out the wachowskis entirely would I think deprive it of its soul

This movie had so many interesting ideas, any one of them would make for an amazing movie. Some concepts I found really intriguing were: - A matrix within the matrix. - Neo making his own Morpheus to help him escape the matrix. - Neo's story (and the matrix itself) being part of pop culture within the matrix, so when someone starts questioning reality, they are not sure what is real and what isn't. And even after escaping, they still can't be sure whether any of it is real - We saw some of this with Neo, but once he woke up, that was it, he knew that he was in the real world. - The machine civil war. - Humans and machines working together. - The machines overloading the humans with information, using traditional and social media to cause stress, so the humans will create more energy (I feel they could make some great points about our society with this one). - I even liked the idea of Neo and Trinity being the one together, which sends the message that both sexes have to work together (I thought that this was kinda cringe though, there was never any hint to Trinity being the one along side Neo). - I also liked the idea of Neo and Smith working together to bring down the analyst who held them both captive. And what did they chose to go with? The same story as before (with recreating some of the shots and straight up reusing other shots from the old movies), while trying to be "meta" and critique modern movies, sequels, reboots and cash grabs, while also being a sequel, reboot and a cash grab. I also really hated the moment when the Analyst said something along the lines: "I'm using bullet time, the power that defined you, against you". Bullet time is not a power, it's just the name of the filming/VFX technique used to show what Neo could do. Don't even get me started on the time Neo dodged the bullet or the awful fight scenes. We've seen what Keanu can do for the John Wick movies, they should have done something like that. I mean, the director of John Wick was right there (Chad - Trinity's husband). If this long comment doesn't make it clear, I was really disappointed in this movie. I feel like the Wachowski's are great at introducing some awesome ideas, but don't really know what to do with them. I felt the same way with Jupiter's Ascending, if I remember correctly, that movie had some interesting concepts, but the final product was disappointing.

I've watched this 3 times. I didn't love it, or hate it the first time. But there are story elements and concepts that are pretty cool and interesting honestly. But the big things it lacks is the amazing action, special effects, the score, and cinematography of the original trilogy. I completely get why people do not like and hate this movie. But I personally don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be. Not sure how this movie allegedly cost 190 million to make. It doesn't look like it. Also not having Fishburne and Weaving apart of the film hurt it. Being put on HBO Max and up against the juggernaut of Spider-Man did it no favors either. I'll revisit the movie again I'm sure. When I heard it compared to TLJ, I figured Neo's characterization was going to be awful. But I think that they actually did a good job keeping him and Trinity fairly canonical with their earlier appearances. But the lack of action hurt this. The word of mouth mixed to negative at best. Ah well! How cool would it have been if it was Hugo Weaving's Agent Smith teaming up with Neo at the end? I also wish Neo did more than force push everything lol.

I love the first three Matrix films and was eagerly waiting for this movie ever since it was announced, and I was shocked at how bad it was. The only positive things were learning how the machines and humanity can now live together in peace and harmony, and Keanu and Carrie's acting. But everything else... 1. Would it really have been that hard to bring an older Morpheus back instead of killing him offscreen and bringing in a machine fanboy to take his place? 2. So there was a civil war within the machines, and now Io is involved in yet another war, which left humanity once again enslaved in the Matrix means that Neo's sacrifice ultimately amounted to NOTHING. 3. Niobe is an unlikable jerk who gives Old Luke Skywalker a run for his money as the most cynical edgelord around. 4. The Merovingian (who is now king of the hobos) adds NOTHING to the film. AT ALL. He literally just stands there and yells at Neo about how much he sucks before shambling away like Gollum and is never mentioned again. You could have cut him and his goons out and saved us from that horribly edited fight scene. 5. Smith... oh my God, where do I even begin with Smith? Wasn't he deleted for good at the end of 'Revelations'? Why the FCUK would the machines even let him still be around when he, you know, TRIED TO WIPE OUT HUMANITY AND THE MACHINES AND ALMOST SUCCEEDED?! Neo doesn't even seem to care when he realizes that his business partner is his mortal enemy. He's like, 'Oh.' and then they get into another pointless fight that adds nothing to the plot. like the Merovingian, you could have cut Smith out of the film entirely without affecting it at all. 6. Bugs is boring. Her crew are boring, get maybe one line each, and get no development at all. 7. Bugs sounds like she's mumbling most of her lines. 8. Why in heaven's name did the film need to make Trinity's release from the Matrix so freaking complicated?! Would it really be that hard to just unplug her and then whisk her out of the machine tower instead of Star Trek-level technobable about duplicating her brain waves? 9. The climax is a boring, generic escape scene that could have been taken from any thriller released in the past twenty years. It feels like it's building up to a spectacular finale, only to end without delivering said finale. 10. The film can't decide if it's a romance, a thriller, the start of a new series, or a reboot. It tries to do everything and fails. 11. The action and fight scenes are dull, poorly shot, and poorly edited. Compared to the smooth, slick, and professional-looking fights from the first three films, this movie looks like it was shot by amateurs. I hate banging on a movie that Lana Wachowski made to help cope with the death of her parents, but 'Resurrections' is a failure from beginning to end. The Matrix series deserved better than this.

1) Casting: It would be narratively convoluted to have two of the same character, one a fictitious version created by Neo and a "real' one that's just old and there for exposition. And even if he joined in the adventure, then there'd be no point for the AI one to exist to begin with. As for Weaving, he's doing theater and couldn't match up scheduling. 2) Plotline: Remember, Trinity can't "be taken out" of the matrix, she has to leave voluntarily (the brain heist is introduced as a new thing). Smith and the Mervoingian still exist because this matrix is still based off the source code of the previous one (though altered slightly). They're essentially even more trapped in it than Neo and Trinity are because they don't have "real" bodies to escape with. All are trapped because the faction of the machines that didn't want change, was able to overpower the faction that Neo saved. The faction that's now allied with Io. And as you saw, some citizens of Io (real or AI) still believe in full-on war and fighting, while others want to avoid the death and destruction that comes with it. 3) New character development and action: Yeah, they just flopped on that one. Horrible editing too. Though, Keanu is nearly 60 and Moss is over 50 and probably has done anything close to action for over 2 decades.

To be fair Smith was obliterated in the first movie, and the idea they wanted to go with was that his presence will always be inevitable so long as Neo is alive, which is why he sacrificed himself in Revolutions. But part of the reason the Analyst had to keep Neo controlled was so that Smith was too. If Neo’s around, Smith always will be too, Matrix Reloaded established that.

On WB’s “For Your Consideration” section, they had a ton of different categories for Matrix: Resurrections. Christina Ricci was listed under “Best Supporting Actress”. She is also one of the top billed actors in the film. Considering that she had a total of 30 seconds of screen time and considering that I KNEW before seeing the movie that she was going to be in the scenes at the software company, and I STILL managed to miss her entirely on my first viewing. I had to go back and watch again, specifically searching for her. My guess is that she was essentially cut from the final cut of the movie and I’m guessing that those cuts were made VERY late in post, because nothing she did in those 30 seconds were award worthy 🤣. I know that there were multiple screenings going back to the early summer months. I wish I could get a confirmation from people that watched those test screenings if they can remember anything that they saw in those viewings that were removed for the final release. My speculation is that there was quite a bit more WB bashing and stuff from the meta marketing scenes that just dragged on. Some of the acting in this movie was over the top for no reason. However, I don’t put The Merovingian in that category. His epic FACE-ZUCKER-SUCK mad rant was an A+ to me!
