Every year, the Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles showcases a large spectrum of tennis talent the State of Hawaii houses. Players from around the islands as well as the club itself turn out to participate in the Grand Slam of Hawaii Tennis each time the tournament is run.
Over the years, many champions have been crowned & many former champions continue to play the event. In 2014, the biggest story in the tournament probably surrounded former champion Henry Somerville, then Director of Tennis at the Oahu Club, & his doubles partner, Andrew Somverille, former guest of Tennis Ninja TV Interviews not long ago! At the time this match was played, Andrew was only 12 years old. Yes, you heard right... 12! However, don't let his then age fool you here. Andrew, like he mentioned in his interview, was already immersed in the competitive junior tennis world, playing against local, national, & even international talent on the court. That being said, the Men's Night Doubles would be the ultimate proving ground for his progression in the game at the time. Playing alongside his Dad, this would be an experience to both learn from & enjoy!
Standing in their way would be two KRC members that would make them work: Blake Goodman & Aaron Kreitzer. Anytime a doubles team plays a match at the Kailua Night Doubles, the competition is extra fierce when they challenge a Racquet Club team. That night, KRC had home court advantage as Aaron & Blake had already been playing doubles on those courts for years. The court, the audience, the lights, it was all to familiar to them as they battled against an established Hawaii Tennis Legend as well as a possible future legend. Aaron & Blake rose to the challenged as they blasted, lobbed, & poach their way to 3 sets worth of very memorable doubles.
This match would last over 2 hours & would go down as one of the most memorable doubles match from the Kailua Night Doubles that year!
