In canon, The 'Real' Nightmare did die and the Goopy nootmare is just a liquid made out of Negativity from the apple so that's why whenever Dream shoots Positivity arrows at Goopy nootmare, He doesn't die because he literally doesn't have a soul nor does he need a body to survive in it. (Creator of Dreatale) → Joku did confirm that Goopy nootmare and the real nightmare aren't the same person so... Yeah.

Did you know past nightmare and Dream didn't spread negativity or positivity? They only protected the apples on the tree of feeling but they gained their powers when the tree was destroyed by nightmare. Did you know the incident happen when they were 6? Did you know their souls are apples? Did you know at first they were floating balls of magic then since they were unstable they were given skeleton bodies?
