While bowfishing for carp in Big Bear Lake, I happened to record something big making big waves in an otherwise flat, and empty lake. I want to know what other people think it is.
It's one of the Sturgeon they dumped in there about 30 years ago. When I was fishing for trout in 2017 . . . I was watching the depth finder. I live up there in summer and have seen a few huge Blue Cats and some schools of fingerling trout or schools of minnows before that can fool you for a few minutes but nothing like what I saw the one day is supposed to be in that lake. It was at least 7ft long and if I had to guess, I would say in the 3-400lb range. It circled under the pontoon for several minutes sending tons of bubbles to the surface sporadically. Then it disappeared. I could not get over top of it again. But in 2019 during that sick toxic algae bloom I was dropping baits in the channel in front of the Observatory, and I watched it roll off the surface. Scared the crap out of me. But it is definitely a White Sturgeon planted in there in 1991 as juveniles. They can't spawn but the ones I saw on the fish finder and that one that rolled on the surface were in the 6-8 ft 3-400lb range. A monster of sorts but not a real monster.
Thank you so much for commenting, Clarence. I knew there had to be someone out there who’d had an experience with this thing before me. And my sighting was in the middle pretty much dead center between the observatory and Big Bear Marina. I was just so blown away by what I was seeing (as you can tell in the video) that I just knew it had to be something big making those waves. On another occasion in the summer of 2021 my girlfriend and I were hunting carp in Fisher Cove and we saw something that was displacing water moving in a circle, too. Didn’t see the fish itself, but it left an impression on both of us for sure. Your account of it circling under your boat sounds very similar to what we saw, even though our experience was in shallower water. Maybe they hunt like blue whales in that regard. Thanks again for weighing in. Been super curious about other people’s experiences.
I had one swim out of the water like a sea serpent 6 feet from where I was standing in Lake Ontario, I wasn't about to say anything because earlier that night we did acid, then my friend says "did you fucking see that!!!" Yep, out I went. It looked so primitive on the dorsal, but too big for me to stand next to. Who knows what is out there, I grew up in the Thousand Islands area of the St Lawrence and have seen some might big fish down there, so at about 400 feet deep, could be pretty huge.
And how about this one? Seems pretty obvious whatever it is - is moving from right to left. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YKALSsnSRFI.html
Although I heard a story about a really big catfish on the bottom at the deep end of the lake, I’m also of the mind that it was a sturgeon. Thanks for weighing in 👍🏼
Earthquakes. Big Bear is riddled with them daily. Most are under 2.0 though which aren't 'felt' by people. For example there have already been 39 quakes there in the past 24hrs (6/4/2023).. One was a 2.2.. and there shoulda been a couple last week in the 3+range.. did you feel anything?
there's some really big snapping turtles out there. when they swim on/near the surface, they make quite a bow wake, and can really move out if they want to.
If you look carefully where arrow indicator was, it looks as if there was a big splash. Here in some of the big South African dams, there are giant barbel (catfish) and other things in the region of 9 metres to 15 metres long that were picked up on equipment being used to do surveys of the depths etc of the dams. I have myself seen only the mouth, literally the size of a wheelie bin, opening up to swallow a dead dassie/rockrabbit floating nearby. I only became aware of its presence by the sound it made similar to water going down the drain in a bathtub. Pretty thought provoking if you're alone..
Hmmm just stumbled onto this video, I'll admit that was pretty freaky. There are lots of stories of unknown lake creatures popping up everywhere, even here where I am in New York! I can't say what that was, but I don't think it was Sturgeon? Maybe? Those waves were a bit too big....Be careful out there!
I saw that too - but the distance between me and the waves was between 100 and 200 yards away. That boat had to have been closer to a mile away. Unless the depth of the lake got substantially more shallow in that area of the lake (which is entirely possible - the lake was a bit low at that time) - then I’m inclined to believe it was a big sturgeon. You don’t see the waves from that boat travel across the lake and increase in size, but they do seem to just appear in that area where I first saw them. Either way, thanks for weighing in.👍🏼
Kentucky Lake has really large catfish. A woman once caught an 88 pound catfish. A man once caught a catfish that was 112 pounds, and the height of a preteen.
I found there are some fish that can get pretty big. If there's enough foraging. Something that makes that much wake though?!! Makes me wonder! Muskellunge are on peak during the months of June to December with a daily bag limit of 1 and a minimum length limit of 40 inches. Meanwhile, fishing is not allowed on certain species like the shovelnose sturgeon, paddlefish, and lake sturgeon.
I once read that divers inspecting the damn will not go down alone because of the size of some of the huge shadows they've seen moving around down there.
Heard a similar story about a diver who went down, landed on what he thought was a boulder. Turned out to be the head of a catfish that tried to suck him in. He immediately surfaced and refuses to go back into that lake.
Could be seismic or you got a submersible out there. I could see reflections long before the wave could be seen, just light reflecting from where they came from like a mirror.
That has to be 1 fish and a very big one. You were right about the waves but even in the camera you could tell its something big. Is this a fresh water lake? Get a bigger boat and call the guy from River Monstors.
There's no disturbance on the water. The arrow is pointing to the waves directly below the angle of the sun. It was just the sunlight reflecting of of those waves as the reflection was directly below the sun angle. They are boat wake waves from a boat that crossed in the distance that you didn't notice. And the waves were not 2 to 3 feet high. They were originally about 1 foot high or less. Not even a 20 foot great white shark could make those sized waves.
You say there’s no disturbance on the water then proceed to discuss the reflection of the sun ON the waves. The waves that aren’t there?! “They’re boat wake waves from a boat that crossed in the distance that you didn’t notice”. Um, yeah my guy - I noticed. But if you look at the distance involved, that boat is a mile or two away and then continues to the right of the camera’s view. Why no waves from that same source if that’s what created the waves I was watching and pointing out? And how is it that those waves didn’t dissipate over such a great distance when created from one direction while disappearing entirely when made from another direction? Didn’t think too much about that assessment didja? I’m on that lake A LOT. I’m not confused about what boat waves do to an otherwise calm lake. Those waves were clearly created by something between me and that boat in the far distance, but much closer to me than to the boat. I was looking for a thoughtful, educated theory (like, from a local) instead of a knee jerk reaction from someone who’s apparently never been on a lake before. Look through some of the other comments. Sturgeon, seen by someone who’s lived there for a lot of years. Big catfish that scare divers into never working in that lake again. You’re all over the place with your conclusions and YOU contradict yourself in your own conclusions. Smh
I actually heard a story from a friend of mine about a giant catfish in that lake. A friend of his is an underwater welder and was hired by the lake management to do some kind of underwater welding job at the deep end of the lake by the dam. He dropped down to the bottom with his weights and gear and landed on what he thought was a boulder. That boulder was actually the head of a catfish - said it tried to suck him in. He immediately surfaced and now refuses to do any underwater work there. If you extrapolate how large that head was based on a man’s shoulder width stance, that translates into one really big fish. Scary big.
Back when we had a bad drought and the lake was down 30-40’, my dad and I were landing 4’ blues. I almost landed one that was longer than the hood of our car. It was the biggest cat my dads ever seen. 2:30am 45 min fight. 25lb test.
A couple of other people have made similar observations, but the distance involved doesn’t jive. I need to make a video showing a map to scale so that people can understand that where those boats were traveling was a mile and a half to two miles away. I’m on that lake A LOT. I know how boat wake waves diminish over distance and the simple fact is that those waves that raised the bow of my boat so high that my trolling motor prop was out of the water could not have possibly come from a source one to two miles away. One hundred to one hundred and fifty yards (where I first saw the source of the waves being created), yes. I appreciate you weighing in, but it wasn’t an earthquake or boat waves. There’s a really big fish of some kind in there. I’ll catch it on the move again, I just know it.
Something else likes to hunt carp at that time. It appears to prefer that small island in the middle of the lake. But whatever it is, it can create a way that can disrupt your boat's stability. So I suggest to not approach it. If curious, let it come to you.
It could be seismic activity a very localized version of that I mean you guys had some big shakers up here at one point just a guess but that was pretty trippy I know how water works I grew up on the beach commercial fish 23 years I've seen all kinds of stuff that no one could ever believe so doubt could be a possibility I remember one time I was looking at the plotter on my buddies boat I was tied off to him we were doing these humongous circles when it was a tsunami warning we are three or four miles off the beach next thing I know I'm less than a hundred feet of water or where my crab traps were and we were we move the whole long-distance in a matter of just not very long at all it wasn't no minute the water gets affected by that stuff you do got a big Critter up there the capture that thing and sell it . Beyond my family from up there from a very very very long time ago is my brother the first person born in Arrowhead Hospital I think he was okay buddy over now
@@carpkiller8777 type in (12urbanwildland big bear lake monster) and it will pop up. I've seen a couple others as well. Hope this helps you out. You got the itch ...I've seen it before. Lol
There's another video where a guy is trying to reel in and identify a fish....it's a big carp. They are in the lake behind my house. The top fin is so easily recognizable.
I tell guys all the time. It would scare ya to know whats swimming in your local waters. I no longer swim in lakes streams or rivers. Especially in the deep south. its gator infested
I’ve seen that footage, and believe it or not - the wake created by what I saw was bigger. Like, a LOT bigger. The wake was comparable to what a boat would create. The closer I got to the source and the degree to which I was bobbing up and down through its’ waves made me extremely nervous. My boat is 12’ and I think that fish was about the same size, maybe even bigger
I didn't know Big Bear had sturgeon....I'd bet on that... I know for a fact Big Bear has huge catfish... someone found a head nailed to a tree in the 70s or 80s that weighed 18 pounds... One time in the 80s we were shooting carp In the lake behind 7-11 Eagle point I think it's called...lots of grass In the water...we were wading in waste deep water taking pot shots at carp with a single shot .22lr my buddy spooked something and it felt like someone hit me in the ankle with a 2×4 it almost knocked me down! 🤷 Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school CA ✌️
I’ve heard a few stories now about underwater welders/divers who refuse to go back into that lake because of the monsters they’ve encountered down there. One guy dropped down for a welding job, landed on what he thought was a boulder - but it was the head of a catfish that tried to suck him in! He surfaced immediately and refuses to go back into that lake. The shape of a sturgeon seems less likely to create a big wake but a catfish, on the other hand - that’d create a substantial wake. I’ve always got my head on a swivel looking for another sighting of whatever it is that’s in there. 🤞🏼 Would love to prove the trolls wrong who insist it’s a boat or an earthquake.
@@carpkiller8777 I remember hearing those same stories about those welders...the way I heard that one was when that diver settled down to what he thought was a boulder...It opened it's eyes! And scared the hell outta that guy! Just thought I'd share that with you! I'm third centurion Californian grew up in Downey Southern California Big Bear was always one of our hangouts... here's one for ya about Azusa canyon where everyone goes 4×4ing in the muddy east fork...I used to go back in the canyon and catch little native Rainbow Trout...one day late afternoon I was headed up and I pulled into a turnout overlook over the canyon real close to where the bridge takes you over the river or you can drop down and play in the mud... anyway I walked out to the edge ( I was burning a fatty) and I looked down at the river it travels through there to a dam / reservoir and where the hill next to me point died into the sand there was a huge monolithic rectangle boulder down at the waters edge....There was a Sasquatch sitting on that boulder just rocking back and forth... about 110 feet away! I just sat there and watched it for about 40 minutes waiting for someone else to turn in no one did so I went fishing! It was a trip...huge long back massive muscles long patchy reddish brown hair not really a neck to mention ( it's back was to me) and huge buttocks! Swear to God bro! ✌️🙋
He didnt see the boat way off in the distance go by st the early part of the video. You see it go from keft to right and sbive his head. Just wake waves.
I don’t know if you’ve ever been on a boat before or witnessed how wake waves dissipate over distance, but the boat in the distance was a good two miles away. Those waves won’t travel that distance in two minutes time, and they certainly won’t increase in size. What created those waves was much closer to me than the boats in the distance. What’s more, that same boat (possibly towing a water skier) moves to my right following the shoreline. Why isn’t there a steady source of waves emanating from that boat traveling that distance? Answer: Because that boat’s waves would dissipate into nothingness well before they got to me. I’ve been on that lake many times. I’m familiar with how boat waves look and how far they travel before diminishing. Take a look at this video shot just a few weeks ago and tell me where the boat allegedly is. They were created between myself and the shoreline and clearly there is no boat present. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YKALSsnSRFI.html
Big Bear lake is man made with a dam at one end, there couldn't be anything too old or ancient living in it, it would have to be something introduced to the lake in modern times which grew to a large size ... giant Sturgeon??
Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking too. One of the locals commented in this thread - said he’s seen at least one really big sturgeon with his own eyes. I’ve heard stories about divers who’ve encountered ridiculously huge catfish on the bottom. Judging from the water displacement, I’m of the mind that a catfish’s big head is more likely to have created that wave signature then the torpedo shaped sturgeon. But until I see whatever it is with my own eyes, it’ll remain a mystery.
Maybe, but Big Beat Lake isn't deep enough for any really large sized aquatic animal certainly not a Nessie sized one, BB Lake is after all just a man made lake, a dammed up valley
as kid in 70s i know out law fisherman and rt cop he was shocking catfish and his was nocked out of boat hit bottom of boat by sturgeon 8 to 10 feet long it rowed when shocked the rowl some times any way old guy quit fishing with electricity after that fished from shore mostly after that
If the water signature was different, that could be a possibility - like if the waves were radiating outwards from a central, singular “air pocket” - but that wasn’t the case. Water was definitely being displaced by something moving through the water. But no, I didn’t check to see if their was any seismic activity. It was on September 2, 2022 if you’re inclined to research that yourself.
@@carpkiller8777 well if it was a fish hopefully you land it. Best of luck. BTW definitely awesome how you reel them in from an arrow.. will stop by from time to time hopefully I see a video of you catching this monster
New sighting on 5/19/23: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YKALSsnSRFI.html Pretty obvious something is moving in the water from right to left. To me, anyways. Let me know what you think.
Oooooooo, that’s a really good idea. But that would take time away from my mission of shooting and removing carp from the lake. Not to mention the fact that visibility underwater is severely limited. I’d say 5 to 6 feet at best and some kind of accompanying light source would probably be needed as well. I already spend a lot of time going through video footage to present the highlighted shots of my bowfishing…can’t imagine how much time would be involved reviewing and scrutinizing hours of murky, underwater footage in the hopes of finding whatever beast is down there. And it probably steers clear of any sized boat in that lake, besides. Think I start a patreon page to fund this endeavor? Would you contribute?
I'm thinkin you should stay off the lake....that could be a Sink hole getting ready to open up. It's letting small amount of water in and gets re-plugged. Eventually .. your boat will get pulled in along with it.
I dont like green lakes, they are full of mysterious creatures. I would be high tailing it to the shore or marina. No thanks. I think you are brave for heading towards it. Suoer spooky monster eel, water maccasin, gar, plesiosaur. Ugh
That’s exactly why it was so noteworthy. You can see by my reaction that there weren’t any boats around - which means that the waves were created by something just under the surface of the water. And they were deep waves, like what a wake boarding boat leaves when it’s setting up the water for someone surfing the waves behind it. Whatever it is - it’s big. You can hear the prop of my trolling motor coming out of the water as I encountered the waves - and that’s after they were created a full 100+ yards away AND with my full weight (220-ish) at the front of the boat.
@@carpkiller8777 after I watched your video I went and looked up Ogopogo (may be spelling that wrong) and there I saw the most believable footage I've ever seen, so if you think something like that is in this lake...keep searching for it.
Because they are invasive. They eat up all of the native trout and bass eggs and they out-populate everything else in the water. If steps aren’t taken to reduce their numbers, carp will be the only thing in the lake. They’re a major problem for any fresh water ecosystem. That’s why lake managers encourage people like me to remove as many as possible. There are literally millions of them in the lake - removing them is a conservationist move that helps ensure a healthy balance in the lake.
It’s not killing for the sake of killing. They’re an invasive species that are harmful to the ecosystem. They out-populate all other native species if left unchecked. It’s a conservationist move, removing them from the lake. Educate yourself.
@@carpkiller8777 I understand they’re invasive. But you can’t eradicate them with a bow and arrow. Silver carp are the bigger problem. Common carp are in all rivers and lakes in Europe and are regarded as a sport fish. And treated with respect. I find it strange how America doesn’t accept them . They are not going away so I see shooting fish with a bow a little bit disturbing. Just my opinion. No disrespect to you.
@@raygrange7312 I can’t eradicate them by myself, no. But I can make a difference. Last year I shot and removed over 2000 pounds of carp from that lake. There’s also a yearly “carp roundup” where archers and anglers alike try to remove as many carp as they can. The lake management also has a boat specifically outfitted to take carp out of the water. Every little bit helps to ensure a healthy balance between the game fish (trout and bass) and the invasive carp that are not wanted. It’s impossible to eradicate them entirely once they’re in the lake, but we can still take steps to ensure that they don’t take over completely.
@@carpkiller8777 understand you. It’s just that us on the other side of the pond we love big carp. A whole fishing industry is based on carp fishing. We don’t have problems with the fish. Silver carp I understand. Incredibly destructive to water ways. We don’t have any here.
