*SOME RED FLAGS TO LOOK OUT FOR:* - the job add says they look for young people specifically - no name of a company just a number to call, often the person you are supposed to contact has a female name (this makes other women feel safer) - the paying is way too good for the field of work - when you call they don't answer with a standardised greeting (something like "hi this is bla bla company, how can i help you") - them contacting you only through texts and emails - emails that don't have any type of "company watermark" at the bottom of the mail (the logo, address, phone number, names of the manager/executive director should be there)

@LadyLunoma don't do it. They could be groomers. They get you in and ask about your life and then most young people vent. So when they do they look for is anyone gonna notice there gone? Is anyone going to come looking for them? Don't do it ....they are groomers.

I was harrassed everyday by my ex husband that I needed to try harder to get a job.but as an immigrant with no higher education it wasnt easy. So stupid enough I looked at craigslist and came across an ad for a nanny job. I almost got scammed out of a lot of money (check fraud) but was fortunately warned by my ex’s sister that it must be a scam! So scary. I was an easy target as I have autism so I tend to miss out on warning signs in peoples behavior and also didnt really know all details about what really goes on on places like craigslist etc. a lot of scams and strange people. At least I’m older and wiser now, but many other people might be abused too and vulnerable because of handicap or low self esteem etc and taken advantage of :( strangely.. this guy I messaged also said he was from Texas!!

The biggest problem with having an anxiety disorder is that you become so willing to ignore genuine red flags and your gut feelings/instincts because you're bombarded with false flags on the daily, often several times per day. Hypervigilance isn't just physically and mentally exhausting, it wears down your credibility with yourself - so it's easy to shrug off one or two "weird" things. It's honestly absolutely amazing that you got past that feeling of "it's just me", and you probably legitimately saved your own life doing so. 11/10. very proud of you.
@pigeon2503
@pigeon2503 4 года назад
This is something I'm insanely struggling with. There's no "getting over" anxiety when the "getting over" means you end up ignoring what could be genuine red flags. Then when shit happens, and you're there berating yourself and become even more anxious then you were before. Depending on how unfortunate you are, this could become an endless cycle. I'm not sure what to do about it
@EmilyKinny

Thank you for this. So many comments saying to trust your instincts without realizing that many people (including Ready To Glare she literally mentions it in this video) cannot trust their instincts or they would ruin their lives. I was interviewing for a public library job in a very well known library, all completely legit, I got crazy anxiety during my interview and tanked it. I currently work at a house museum and I'd lose my job if I "listened to my instincts" when a customer walks in and I get anxiety and want to sprint out. We get extremely good at talking ourselves down and convincing ourselves we're overreacting. It's not as easy as "I feel more unsafe than usual" when you literally always feel unsafe.
@Goober504
@Goober504 4 года назад
Exactly my gut tells me to dip out of a large college classroom. Sometimes I am comfortable in situations where I shouldn't be at all. Anxiety is a good thing to have and it happens for a reason, which sucks when that sense is off.

My aunt lives in pain every single day because she didn't want to hurt a man she didn't knows feelings. She was walking alone on a dark street home from work. A man crossed the street and was walking behind her pretty closely. She said in her gut she felt unsafe but she didn't want him to think she was a racist and cross the street because it was dark and he was a POC and hurt his feeling. Moments later she would be beaten and raped in a alley left for dead. Somehow she found the strength to crawl to the edge of the alley and get help. He broke her jaw so badly that years later 3 surgeries she is still left in debilitating pain and a speech impairment. Sadly the surgery she needs is considered cosmetic by her insurance and they won't cover the 25,000 it would take to repair much of the damage. Not that she will ever feel not damaged she says. And all because she didn't trust her gut and was more worried about someone else's feelings. Ladies if you are alone in a dark place and a man makes the effort to come closer to you, or you just feel unsafe. Feelings go out the door. I don't care if they're green or purple, protect yourself first. Evil comes in all sorts of packages. That gut instinct is what keeps us safe. Peace and love to you all xo

And he was walking relatively close behind me,and for a millisecond I thought "maybe he's just tryna catch up?"But I didn't wanna risk it.So I pulled out my phone,opened my mom's contact,and held my finger ready to press the dial button,and I held the phone so the guy behind me could see I was ready to dial.And I think he got the gist,cause he slowed down and fell behind.

The city I'm from in the southern US has a big problem with human/sex trafficking. I was going to a coffee shop before class (around 10am), and when I came out, an SUV with a bunch of men is parked right up next to me. I briskly walked to my car when one of the dudes jumped out, so I went through the passenger side of my car. He started pulling on my door and knocking on my window. Human trafficking is a very real, and very terrifying problem all throughout the united states. You don't have to be beautiful or "physically attractive" to fit the standards they are looking for. I myself am average looking, but heavy set and I was almost a victim of such a crime. PLEASE, it does not matter if you are male, female, or any other gender, young, old, ugly, drop dead gorgeous-- you will tick the boxes of someone out there, and those in the trafficking business know this. Always exercise caution, and trust your gut feeling, even if you have anxiety and second guess yourself !

I'm so thankful you are ok! My mom taught me something kind of cool when I started working. Never accept a same day interview and do a drive by to scope the place out. She also warned me against being alone in buildings. I've only had that happen once and I just straight up said, "Hey, no offense Sir but I'm really uncomfortable. Is there any way we could reschedule when the other workers are in?" He got mad, I never went back. Lastly, always listen to your gut. If you feel in danger, you need to act on that. My own little tidbit I've learned is that the worst monsters usually live in the nicest houses. You have to always be aware of what's going on around you.

Human trafficking is so much closer than people think!!! I had an experience at about 12 when I was walking to my mother's work from the bus stop. It was a safe neighborhood and a route I'd walked hundreds of times. A black Suburban xl pulled in front of me and cut me off as I was about to cross a one lane residential street. A woman in the passenger seat rolled down her window and got out of the car-- she was very nice but seemed to be trying to distract me. I was so caught off guard but I got the same feeling you did, that something just is not right here. I put a lot of space between myself and the trunk of the car and sprinted the 6 or so blocks I had left on my walk. It still makes me tear up thinking about it, and to know that if I didn't listen to my intuition like I did I could have been roped into such an abhorrent and hard to escape abuse system. I'm so glad you did the same and got out while you could, and I'm sorry you were in that situation in the first place. Sending you lots of love ❤️

Something similar happened to me! I was 7. Me and my best friend were walking home from a park near our homes (we lived 3 houses apart). When we were walking home this SUV pulled up right next to us. It was the wrong side of the road for the SUV, they pulled across the lane that would have been oncoming traffic for the SUV. But it was a very quiet street so there were no other cars coming. My friend and I got on high alert right away and the driver got out of the car to come towards us very quickly when we just started to run. There may have been somebody else in the car as well but we didn't stay there long enough to see if there was another adult. The guy wasn't asking for directions and even if he was we were very small children who couldn't have given directions anyway.

When I was twelve, I decided to walk my dog through a secluded little wildlife sanctuary thing I’d been going through since I was really little. I walked the path through, which lead to a park on the river. I usually avoided this area but the do had taken a dump and I needed to through it out, so I swerved a couple feet in to through the stuff out. Immediately, and obvious hard drug user started screaming at me in a foreign language, I think it was polish? I apologized for what I thought was having the dog so close to the park and crossed the street. A black car with tinted windows pulled up right behind me. I kind of froze, and it stopped. I started walking kind of slowly, and sure enough, it starts to roll a bit. I sprint the rest of the way up the hill and take a much longer way home, texting my parents (we’d kind of formed away from one another and I wasn’t meeting back where I was supposed to) explaining I was home and stuff but that I’d just had a weird encounter.

Here’s another thought... if you’re all but desperate for a job and/or are looking for reasons to believe it’s legitimate, you may want to rethink it. You can’t let wanting employment cloud your judgment. I’ve been in situations where I really needed a roommate, a job, or was intensely lonely and wanted a friend; I tried to explain away/ignore red flags in each circumstance and the results ranged from disappointing to frightening. Please listen to your gut, it’s trying to tell you something. There will always be another job but if you walk into a dangerous situation you might never come out.

@@tacoslegit1556 actually, if you had tried scrolling a little further before making baseless accusations, you'd see it had nothing to do with her breaking any rules. So they stopped the program and cut the jobs.
@insanecurity
@insanecurity 5 лет назад
Amarianee hey there, thank you for your reply, that’s so sad to hear... can you explain to me one thing though, because I still don’t exactly understand what went down. If the school requires her to take the class and she is willing to take the class and pay for it, how did the situation escalate, even with someone reporting on it, to this point? Why is she being punished? Isn’t it the schools fault? I don’t understand what exactly she did wrong to lose her position....
@Amarianee
@Amarianee 5 лет назад
@@insanecurity I'm not sure. I just reposted what she responded to someone else asking further down the comments. It wasn't only her either, she said "we" which implies it's a group of teachers, especially since the union is involved. Basically, unions work outside "regular" labour laws by negotiating different deals on behalf of and between the workers (teachers in this case) and the employers (the school district, or school). Now, keep in mind I still do not know exactly what happened or the details, but to answer your question let's work within the hypothetical: if the school didn't want to allocate budget to training for X amount of teachers but wanted them to do it anyway, they can't just tell them to pay for it themselves or they're fired, that violates the union contact. School had a new program? Needs new training for current employees? School pays for it. However, they can put heavy pressure on them to take it upon themselves and that's what it sounds like they did and she and others were paying for the training. In her response she said they (she and other teachers) were mad at the TAs because they would have rather paid and finished everything and had a job and dealt with the union and reimbursement later rather than snitched to the union and then have the school downsize to avoid the scandal.

I have come close to being taken twice in my life. Once as a child while living on the rez a guy tried to trick my sister and I into getting in his car. I ran and told my dad. The car took off. At the time I just thought of it as stranger danger, but now I have heard so many stories of native girls and women being killed or taken that I think we may have been in a darker danger than we ever imagined. In my twenties I moved to Portland and responded to a Craigslist ad for a woman who said she owned a cleaning company. A man claiming to be her husband (red flag) called me for an interview. The address was outside of town (redish flag). My gps took me to a trailer that looked abandoned (huge red flag). I thought I had the wrong address so I called and nobody answered. Years later a girl on facebook posted a very similar story, but when she got to the abandoned looking trailer there was a guy waiting in a car, and he said he was going to take ger to the actual office because it was "hard to find" to meet with his wife. Sorry for the long comment.

Not surprised, this happens all the time. I was working at the higher end mall of San Jose. Lots of upty stores and people come through. Tons of security and great part of town. As Im walking to the bank to cash my check I went to pick up somone approached me and said how professional I look and if I was open to job opportunities. Had business cards, seemed well groomed and legit. Set up an interview and when I got there it was this run down place. I called and nobody answered, finally after 30 min I got a text and they said they would be right there. I let them know I would be bringing my dad with me since he was my ride (I was 18) and he would just be in the lobby or waiting area while I interviewed. They got upset, and from the parking lot we could see some creepy RV peel out from the back of the building and just drive off. Scariest thing ever, and my dad now comes with me to interviews even at 25yrs old.

What sucks about situations like this when you have a gut feeling something bad is going to happen is that many of us are told when we're younger to ignore that. That something like a gut feeling is illogical and in some cases people perceive gut feelings as almost a metaphysical thing, that since it's not tangible it's not logical. That intuition is a ridiculous thing. So I've heard many people ignore that feeling of danger because of what they were told. Human traffickers are brazen so there is a good chance that something bad was going to happen and it's a good thing you listened to that gut feeling and left. These people approach people in stores, in hotel lobbies, at Disney World even. People have to always be on guard now.

A few years ago I was out of work on medical leave and desperate for a job and went to an interview not really knowing anything about the company. The "business" was in a small office park next to an architect and I had to ask them where the suite was for my interview because it wasn't marked. I entered a very small room with an intercom, a chair, and clipboard with an application on it. When I walked in a voice came over the intercom telling me to fill out the application. I waited 45 minutes before seeing a person and almost left a few times (definitely should have). A middle aged white man came out to interview me. He lead me through a different door, not the one I came in and not the one he came out of, but a door in the corner of the tiny room that I assumed was a closet. He lead me through a dark hallway to an office and I looked in the doors on the way down the hall and saw children's toys on the floors, like baby/toddler toys. The office was just like described in the video, no papers on the desk it felt very staged. The "business" he described was very vague, "international business" and I would have to sign documents saying I would keep anything about the business confidential. I 100% believe this was human trafficking and totally felt the same way, just completely unsafe from the beginning. I drove to a walmart parking lot and called my mom crying and freaking out about how bizarre the whole thing was.

I had a BAD feeling that something SKETCH was about to happen so I waited inside the store for 10 mins, then decided to go. My mom was almost kidnapped as a kid and almost expected me to be kidnapped at some point in my childhood if precautions weren’t taken. So I’ve got a pretty trigger happy inner alarm. But so many people sort of feel this kind of thing happens to “other people,” so they don’t worry. Or they don’t want to seem dramatic or be ridiculous by being scared off by something. But in some cases, being amenable can get women killed. So seeing open and like a team shouldn’t really be the priority in these situations.

Literally only warned someone about this this other day. A French girl I know through a mutual French friend wanted to go to Japan to ‘tutor’ the children of a family that had posted an add on a site looking for a young person to teach the children. She shared the advertisement with me and it looked and sounded legitimate and the pay was what you’d expect but I know what could (and can) happen to people that take jobs abroad like that and I didn’t want her to become another young person that had been kidnapped for organ harvesting or something else. She’s young (17) as well and I feel fiercely protective over her (like she’s a little sister to me) so I spent ages trying to explain to her the risks and such. She ended up not taking the position thankfully and she is going to work closer to home in a couple of years when she’s older.

She’s very trusting and as I said I view her as a younger sister so I feel very protective of her plus I’m paranoid about that stuff anyway, there are endless reports of young teens and students disappearing after going to a job interview or moving abroad and I really do not want that to happen to her or anyone else I know.

It has 120 million people. There are plenty of study abroad programs, too, which are a lot more credible and university-sanctioned. Or even pen pal programs! (And if she's interested in Japanese, the JET program might be something for her. I don't know a lot about it, though; I've just heard about it.) Also I wouldn't call it paranoia. You did the rational, responsible thing. It'd be great if it were a great opportunity. But it looks and sounds sketch for an "ad" to be placed somewhere else, and it's good that she showed you.

MintSodaPop Oh, I get you! I agree with you, it’s exceptionally weird and it was expressed in the ad that they would pay for everything and give her accommodation with them and even though she knows *L I T E R A L L Y* zero Japanese they were still eager to get her to come to them...it was just very unsettling and my big sister side was instantly activated so I was linking her a ton of articles with statistics for missing people (young and old) in Japan and statements from people that had been kidnapped and escaped or had seen very bad stuff happen along those lines. I was honestly pleading with her to not even answer them back but she did and she showed me what she’d sent and what they’d said - she doesn’t even speak English so she was using me and our mutual friend to help her translate so when she got there the language barrier would have been horrendous!

I had something very very similar happen on Indeed! I was applying to a lot of different jobs and heard back from this one company asking me to interview next day. I wasnt available but they let me set my own date/time a couple days later. I went to research the company and couldnt find any website just previous interview comments from TX (Also not my state). I reread the email they sent me and realized it wasnt specific to what I was actually interviewing for. Called the number on the email multiple times to get more information and was routed to a voicemail with limited information as well just a name and asked to call back. Finally looked up the physical address to find that the location had been closed. The whole time I was telling my boyfriend something wasnt right, trusting your instincts and doing your research is so so important.

Something so similar happened to my friend a few months ago! When she applied, the company started TEXTING HER at 2AM and when she stopped responding, they kept asking if she was "still there." When she got the address for the interview we looked it up and it seemed like a weird area. I told her to notify the police and they found out that the location was an abandoned building however, they refused to do anything further because "nobody has fallen victim yet..." wtf

I remember when I was a lot younger ( 2008-2010 ) I was at a fair type thing ( I don’t want to out any place ) me and my grandma went on a haunted house ride (it was a circle ride so we didn’t need restraints) around 1/2-3/4 through some guy in a black morph suit with some sort of creepy mask stopped our cart and picked me up out of it. Being my age I just froze not knowing what to do but my grandma hit him so he dropped me back in the cart. After we got off I was panicked bawling and inconsolable. My family asked the ride operators if they had someone working in there that may have over stepped. They said they didn’t have anyone in there. They got the cops/security and searched the whole place and never found anyone. To this day I get chills thinking about what could’ve happened.

It was supposed to be telemarketing job, they had a website but with a lot of typos and I even copy and paste a part of the “about us” on to google and a different website popped up. And it was located at this abandoned looking plaza, so I just figured it was a new business. But now that I see the similarities I’m glad I didn’t even if it wasn’t the case.

I have chills listening to this! I had a similar experience, but it wasn't an elaborate setup like this. I was walking to a friend's house and an SUV pulled to the side of the road next to me, the driver was yelling out his window at me. People ask me for directions pretty often in my part of town, so I figured that's what he wanted and approached the car. He started telling me that I was pretty, asked if I wanted some drugs, and just kept saying random shit to convince me to get into his car. I just said, "actually, someone's expecting me, I have to go" and turned around immediately, powerwalking down the street. He kept yelling out the window, but I ignored him. When he drove off he was creeping down the street just ahead of me, when I took my phone out he sped off and took the first turn. I never reported that and I really regret it, I'm fully convinced he had "plans" for me.

Had something similar happen to me. When I was freshly 18, I was still in high school and was looking for a summer job. I decided I’d go with lifeguarding since I was a good swimmer. Saw a listing on Glassdoor for an apartment pool lifeguard at this one specific apartment complex. Which is strange because most complexes, at least in my state let a third party manage the pool and it’s staffing. I know this because I went to work for another company guarding in the same city. I was told to arrive at the complex at the leasing office. I was not given a real address, just an apartment name and to arrive in my swimsuit as I would be tested. At the time before my interview I looked on google earth and saw there wasn’t a pool in the complex. It also had a lack of cars and didn’t look lively. I never showed up for my interview and declined. I looked up the name that was on the email on the Red Cross website to see if this person was legit and their name did not come back as being affiliated with them or any certifications to train people. I did not follow a police report just report it to Glassdoor

She got a horrible gut feeling and refused the offer. It’s extremely fishy.

Holy crap, I knew I recognized the name of the woman who wrote that article. I used to be an active member in their Facebook group, and it's generally a great place for camaraderie and support within the tech industry of ATX. This is particularly horrifying because A. it hits so close to home and B. I would have never considered this as being a possibility while looking for a job interview. Furthermore, I've read accounts of people nearly being kidnapped from 6th street (a bar district in Austin that's close to one of the downtown tech company hubs that ADJ associates with). You don't want to believe that these things are possible in the areas where you live/work, and then something like this smacks you in the face. So glad you're okay, and thank you for sharing your experience with us. Hopefully this will instill some safer habits in persons who are in the process of looking for a new job. Love your channel!

I’m so glad you got away and listened to your gut. I’ve had one interview that made me uncomfortable where I called both my mom, dad and sent my location to 3 friends with a time stamp of when I arrived and if they didn’t hear from me in 1 hour to call the cops. It was for a secretary position for a “security company” that turned out to be run out of some guy’s house. He said it was run out of the basement but he didn’t want to conduct the interview in the “office” so that it wouldn’t make me scared. He asked me why I asked his “employee” in the driveway if it was safe. He was like “what? You scared?” In a mocking tone. I said “not scared. Just cautious. Gonna make sure you aren’t going to wear my skin. I’m not stupid.” With a mocking tone right back. My dad had begged me not to go inside but my mom encouraged me to go and just see what it was. I gave the wrong answers to the interview. He stated he wanted a work wife and that he wanted someone to travel with. It was super creep. Always listen to your gut.

I hope I can teach my daughters to listen to their gut instincts like this. I've personally been in so many situations that I look back on and realize how dumb I was to think nothing bad could possibly happen. Luckily, nothing did happen, but I still need to be more cautious. I tend to be too trusting of people and give them the benefit of the doubt. More light needs to be shined upon sex trafficking. So many people don't realize how common it is. It's something I've been doing alot of research on, and the more I learn about it the less safe I feel. I also have anxiety and OCD as well, and often have trouble being part of society. I joked with my fiance the other night while watching the new Ant Man movie that if I was on house arrest I'd be stoked. I have to constantly force myself to participate in public events for the sake of my kids, but issues like this make me feel a bit reassured that my caution might not be such a bad thing.
@KreeZafi

PLEASE also teach them actual concrete warning signs to look out for - sometimes your gut instinct won't warn you, it's not something you should be entirely reliant on. Of course you should act on it if something feels bad, but the lack of bad feeling does not mean everything is fine so you need to also use your brain and logical reasoning to consciously look out for red flags!
