I struggled a bit with finding the right size for my pixel art assets, and after some back and forth, I made a decision.
Weekly update on my pixel art project.

I think the thing with PixelArt is that when you are working with such a small resolution to begin with, a rock could be about 1 pixel or smaller and we can't draw half pixels. I think it's expected that some items will be proportionally incorrect.

So true. The smaller you get, the more liberties you take.

honestly the final result is the best. Art thens to become better the more struggle goes into it, for all the mistakes adds up and you end up with more than you stated with. and experimenting with changes is the way to improve. So awesome, great video!

Sometimes you have to mess it up before you can see what works and what doesn't. Thanks for the feedback!!

A related issue that I've ran into multiple times in music composition: Sometimes things can feel really off just because you're in the process. Context really changes perception, and I feel like sometimes I am blinded staring at details when it actually will resolve itself later. Music, like colors, is filled to the brim with interdependent parts - like how a note can sound off when sung independently, and magical with a nice chord change beneath. Especially part writing is one of those "trust the process" situations, where without experience it is really hard to predict. I think this is why our teachers often encouraged us to not listen too much while arranging or orchestrating (although they didn't communicate it like this)

I think that's true of any art form. As long as you don't share your work, you never get the whole picture. That's in fact the main reason I started this channel in the first place.

Your pixel art is so lovely looking! Really has an almost Mother 3 video game feel. Please make more 🎉

You're right, it really is a very similar style. How come I don't know this game? Is it any good?

@@lucky-jacob many people like it. If you like pixel art and RPGs I recommend you play it. It's actually pretty darn good! Has catchy music also 😊

If anything, the one thing that might improve all 3 iterations is giving life to not just the character and the cloth on the sign, but the trees and grass too. It looks like theres at least some wind, which might sweep along the grass, or shake the branches the slightest bit. The grass itself is also very even across it could use some different colors. And the mushrooms could grow around a tuft of grass or a rock instead. I'm not an artist so take this with a grain of salt, otherwise I think the art style and proportions looks completely fine

Yeah, I guess you are right. Didn't focus too much on the animation for this scene.

i noticed something about your art i'd like to point out. it's a very small detail that i caught. the road where the top part of the road meets the grass has two straight lines going together like that for way too long. i notice that you don't add detail colors and only do colors for shading but i think it would look a lot nicer if you break up those two straight lines with some random shading or different shapes and such
@lucky-jacob
@lucky-jacob 3 месяца назад
Actually, That's something I'll explore a bit more in an upcoming video - probably the week after Easter. I'm still trying to figure out how much detail works best with this style. With such a low pixel count, it's a fine line between detail and noise. I don't like adding random shading but in the case of the grass edge it would probably be best to just add a few dents and bumps to make it more interesting.

what is this animation for? if its for a game I cant wait to try it cuz it looks aesthetically pleasing! :)

Glad you like it! But sadly not a game. It's actually more of an animation/storytelling project, aimed to look and feel like a game. Next video, I'll focus a bit more on that. Hope you stick around!

1:51 I think it is better to put all 3 tree models to give some variation

tbh, I've been thinking a lot more about trees in the last few days than ... well ... ever. I'm guss I'll have to do a separate video on this.

Very creative work, all three background designs looked great! My first thought was "What if you made the player bigger?" I think the legs/head may be slightly out of proportion (if you are going for a normal human look). I looked through the animation at 0.25 and there seems to be a frame missing or something like that as the leg extends quite far in one frame. The colouring also blurs the two legs together a bit, which confused me about which legs was moving the forward. I would consider making the character's right leg darker, as the body would cast a shadow on it, and the contrast would more clearly show the full walking movement.
@lucky-jacob

tbh, I'm pretty much set on the character size because I feel like every extra pixel creates new problems for the design. You're right about the contrast though, and I might have to look into that.

Very cool, Jacob! Are making the animation entirely into Piskel too?
@lucky-jacob
@lucky-jacob 4 месяца назад
Thanks! Some of it in Piskel, some in post. Thinking about making the switch to aseprite tbh. Piskel was a great entry point, but it's also rather limited.

Had the same problem with my game assets a few days ago. The player was so small compared to a door for example and everything was so huge. It's not "wrong" if the style is consistent, but I also switched to smaller assets, because I didn't like it personally :D
@lucky-jacob
@lucky-jacob 4 месяца назад
I think that is ultimately the most important thing. If you have a certain vision in your head, go with it 💪 That's probably the only way to develop your personal style - as long as you're consistent.
