@@altergreenhorn Yes. If you own a yacht - never rent it out, or charter it! Even to your friends, unless they sign a binding contract making them responsible for 100% of repairs for damages. And after the rental or charter period, have a qualified surveyor check every millimeter of the entire vessel and make the surveyor's fee the responsibility of the person who rented the boat.

Privlaka, Mali Lošinj, Croatia. The channel is alligned with the NE wind which creates an artificial current through the channel in these conditions. What you need to do is go as fast as the current and ride the wave. The skipper went too slow and the current generated wave twisted the boat into the wall. Some people suggest bumpers and hands - no way you're doing anything to stop the 10 ton boat from crashing into the wall. The skipper did the right thing keeping everyone in the cockpit for the crossing, because the worst thing that you can do is be a hero and get crushed between th boat and the shore.

Sometimes it's better to stay outside, or choose a different harbor. No sane captain works have gone in, unless it was an emergency (like a sick crew member). One thing he *could have* done was to deploy a drogue or small chute anchor from stern, which prevents serving off of the waves. And have planks on board to use as bouncy ball, next to more fenders. But speaking from experience, most stay outside until there's a better moment.

Hello old salts. I have done some sailing from time to time in Agea, the Marmara sea and lake Ontario through a 45 yrs time span. My take of this incident is unless a present emergency no half way experienced sailor would ever attempt to get in with such a large and beautifull boat (looks like a dofour 44.5) through that narrow passage under such adverse conditions! Trying not to disrespect the skipper, butthe truth is no one I’ve ever met as a serious mature person would have done this entery just for the thrill of it!

it's in central -north part of croatian part of Adriatic Sea Crotian coast , where Bura wind blows a lot . And it's rented boat , like often it is in Croatia . Many tourists ride without any experience and sometimes cause big problem for human life , ecology etc . Riding boat like this or any boat is big responsibility and art , and one cannot learn that in few days :D . Big money is in tourism and tycoons are building a lot of marina in Adriatic , and sea police is not able to control enormous concentration of nautical traffic in Croatia in season .

It’s like he has zero experience manoeuvring something that big. As mentioned elsewhere, even though I am not a licensed captain of a larger boat, my inclination would be to anchor offshore and wait it out if possible. If not, coming in more slowly, and using the thrusters to help keep the front end in line seems like a better choice

@@sailingliberator3395 exactly. Keep in mind that usually, whenever you use the prop, it will add to the speed the current gives. If the current is 4 knots, and your boat speed 5 knots, you'll go 9 knots. Only without using the prop, just the sails, you can have the situation of being ruled by the currents. But these aren't just currents. The waves roll under your boat and will change your course. A higher speed, most likely, would lead to faster crash, as the offset by the waves will still be there. Unless you're so fast that the wave can't get you anymore, but this is not a speedboat. Anyway, not going in is what I would have done. I've sailed in currents much worse than this, but in open sea, and while you can still steer, it's always relative to what the waves and currents offset.

So many saying to wait it out... What if this a leading edge of a major hurricane? There is no 'waiting it out' if it is going to get 100plus winds.
@tobiasfreitag2182
@tobiasfreitag2182 Месяц назад
@jenniferwhitewolf3784 that's in cratia in an area where there is a wind called bora.... the bora can easily reach hurricane force and normally lasts 2 to 3 days, sometimes even longer. The wind comes from the east, and he's east of an island to the windward, in a canale notorious for its high winds when the bora is on.... the exact place you want to get out of as fast as possible..... One thing most people don't know is that some of the highest windspeeds ever were recorded along the dalmatian coast and the bay of Trieste..... the wind is so strong that the islands up there are mostly baren on thereceast side because the vegetation and topsoil get blown away..... Also, in this particular area, there is no shelter for you to wait until the wind dies down..... He might lacks the skill and experience for what he's doing but has enough judgment to know that he has to get outta there.... especially when he lacks expirience sailing a boat in high winds...

Charter boat by the look of it, hope they inspected it when it got back to base. Owners could have a big bill for repairs if not charged against the charterers.

In this situation a tiller is better. This passing requires good flow on rudder and fast/powerful rudder adjustments. This is difficult, if not impossible the way they steer. At that gearing will need a wheel knob, a powerful and accurate arm. Steering like a granny will be expensive
@PeterCarrStav

I’d argue a tiller is better in every situation.

I'd prefer to drive stright from longer distance and with better velocity. Making stright turns just before entrance needs fast reactions on rudder. Going straight requires much smaller reactrions.

Undoubtedly an inexperienced skipper on a charter boat. The cut is very difficult to navigate because the wind and tide are behind the boat. Unless it speeds up, it has no steerage and becomes very difficult to steer in a straight line. As this is just a cut through, the skipper should have taken the long route to sheltered waters.

In this situation, first establish the wind direction and work with it. Next, use the engine to keep your forward speed as low as possible while still moving in the direction you want. The faster you are moving, the worse the damage will be. Neutralise your forward speed completely if you totally lose control. Finally, have at least one crew member, but preferably one on each side employing mobile fenders at the ready as needed. If conditions are still too challenging for all of this and there is any risk to the vessel, drop anchor and wait for the wind to die down. First rule of boating: never rush. First responsibility of the skipper is to safety. Do not have docking in a certain place as your only plan. Always have a plan B, which here would be an easier temporary moor and preferably also a plan C, which in this case would be to drop anchor.

😮 Speed is power is steering is control. Speed greater than the wave speed doesn't let the waves direction determine your heading. Same as a power boat. Slow speed and the waves are sweeping you along in their direction

The real solution would have been to give full throttle just before the entrance and slow down towards the end. Or hoist the storm jib. The problem was that the ship was not in a stable configuration and each gust made her wander around.

This is the northern entrance of Mali Losinj. Especially in times of bura quite strong current - as an experienced Skipper - in terms of this conditions I would suggest to invest the extra 2 hours to go around.
