Sometimes size matters

Yes we just made a video showing how the size of a light doesn't matter, but in this video Peter explains why sometimes, it does. He has one of the only Broncolor Para 3.3 in Australia, and due to its size he can do more with it. We understand not everyone will have access to this light, but Peter gets asked a lot what he does with it so we wanted to demonstrate :)

Parabolics are fun. The first day of Nato training on how to operate a satellite ground station we set up 2 parabolics smaller than yours 150 yards apart. We had conversations just speaking into the parabolic dishes. You can play around and adjust soundwaves similar to the way you adjusted the spread of light.
@RS-Amsterdam

Great video and solid explanation on that parabolic Para. Love the shots. Now you mentioned the video about Kate Moss by Peter Lindbergh, and have seen most of the video's, if not all, and shots Peter made too, but you have to give him credits too in this case. If a model feels safe and confident with a particular Photographer, it can create an extra dimension of magic and let's be honest, Peter was one of a kind !! Thanks for sharing this video !!

Love my Para 220 and the Ring Flash P. Great job on part 1. So much more can be done with this from shifting the ring flash inside to one side and also using the 3 different diffuser. The shadows it produces is also like no other. Thanks for posting Peter.

Peter, I've been shooting for a very long time man and I wanted to thank you for your straight up/to the point talk. One of the biggest things I like about you is your process. You remove all of the nonsense away and simply get to the point of the shot. You don't go into mathematic bs and saying things like "The best". You really show people that being a photographer is BEING YOUR OWN ARTIST. Man if you ever come to Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas or even as far as Houston, you reach out to me. Gotta meet you and we MUST bust some shots.

Great images! Lovely model, beautifully captured! You made a point that you wanted the final picture made in camera, so am I right to assume that you wanted all pictures to be in landscape format? A magazine cover is obviously in portrait orientation, so I initially kind of expected you to also shoot like that. Or is there another thinking there, like that you can always crop from landscape to portrait but would have to extend the background in PS if you wanted it the other way around? Another question - you used the large para plus minus half-way focused: would the images look the same if you had used a smaller Para (like 133) fully de-focused? I haven't had a chance to shoot with the really big ones like yours here, so wondering if there is any noticeable difference in this particular scenario.
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer 3 года назад
My eyes see in landscape which is why I shoot landscape, unless it's for a client, plus yeah I can always crop from landscape to portrait if needed fo a magazine. And no unfortnately the images wouldnt look smilar with the 133 because of the size difference

Another great vid with nuggets of expert wisdom. Have to say, though, that since the advent of ZOOM home setups, ring light catchlights are everywhere. Not sure Im on board with that look.. As to sharpening, I like to sharpen the eyes a TAD, since the eyes attract attention and if they are sharp the impression is the entire image is in focus, true or not.
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer

Love the video content when about the photography but find the intros by the ‘assistant’ annoying to the point where I stop watching your videos. so, i LOVE this video. these look like shots almost all of us could accomplish. while not 10 FOOT, i have a 5 foot shoot through that kind of sort of works well enough for the same type of light. i have a question though about that wall. you mentioned none of your walls/flats have feet/legs on them but how did that stay standing when Ana leaned against it? i LOVED the end wall you added for the background. it made an entirely different look and vibe to the shoot! if 'Rona ever gets under control my wife said we can come to one of your workshops. SHE wont attend (not really a photographer) but i can lol... keep these fabulous videos coming and "hello Bec!"

Peter, you read my mind - some time ago I've seen a video with your studio tour and recently, more and more, I was wondering if you ever make a video, showing how that Para can be used! :) Awesome video and as always, I've learned lots of new things in different aspects of photography :) In regards to the Para - those modifiers provide unbelievable light - using one light and modifier and getting the background blown out, while not having the model overexposed is like... unreal LoL I'd love to see another video, when you guys show how to achieve similar effect - as close as possible - with some budget equipment, as the Broncolor Paras are waaaaay out of reach of most of the photographers ;)

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographerseriously?! Oh! It's like asking Santa for a specific present and actually getting it LoL I'd be honored to have it happened :) Years ago, when I new nearly nothing about the lighting, I had to shoot packshots for some time - shoes, bags, clothes. The clothes were shot on models and I can remember myself shooting it in a tiny room (3x3x2,5m more or less) all painted white and all I've had those days where silver umbrellas (90cm) and flash bulbs (65/32Ws). Hi output and small room had been making the light spilling all over the place like crazy XD Later on I've invested in studio strobes and a bigger softbox. When watching this video I laughed at myself because of all of that amateur fight with the unstoppable light LoL that could've been better controlled by simply hanging some black cloth on each of the side walls ;) And at the same time, seeing you overexposing the background with just one light source, while keeping the model properly lit, was jaw dropping 8D I recently bought something parabolic-like, that looks exactly like the Neewer 35-inch/90cm Hexadecagon Parabolic Softbox and even though I don't have a focusing rod for it, yet, I did try shooting into it with a flash light (using one of those flash bulbs ;D ), that was placed in front of it. Btw., irony (arising from your video) number 2 - when I first thought about a type of the strobe I would probably like to use with a focusing rod on such a softbox, I did think of a ring flash... LoL How, after watching your video, I'm hesitating now, as - personally - I really hate that ring flash reflection in the eyes ;P (I prefer large areas to be reflected (such as windows) and even when it comes to sofboxes, I actually find rectangular ones - deformed by the round shape of the eyeballs' - to be somewhat more intriguing for me...). But that's obviously a matter of a personal preference ;)
