This man has been living with his parents' hoard for years after they passed. He has been afraid to throw it away, and the longer he lets it sit, the more emotionally attached he gets to it. Fortunately, he reached out for our help, so let's do our thing.

A side note I thought about as I watched this video. If you are a parent with adult children and you have a home filled with things that you’re keeping so that you can pass them down to your kids, go through those things NOW and ask your kids if they want those things. If your kid says no, get rid of it, and reclaim those spaces or rooms for your own purposes. ❤

For some that's just there excuse, it goes deeper then that and it becomes for common people like throwing out your favorite loved pet. On each item. Most don't think they have a problem so getting them the right help is hard.

That would be the reasonable thing to do. My mum and dad are divorced. Mum is remarried and has thrown out things over the years without asking us kids if we would like them one day. On the other hand, my dad is a hoarder and cannot face it - he has said that he is leaving it up to us kids to clean it up!

I agree. Eg my children have told me to keep my own photo albums from 1980s onwards - about 100 albums which fill a huge cupboard space and although they are scanned they want me to save them so I have. Lots of other things I scanned and gave those who have left home them on a hard drive including all old family photos and records. When teh youngest went to college I went through every single bit of my house clearing things as I don't want them left with junk after I die. no doubt it will build up a bit again but hopefully not too badly. My current challenge is a 1800 piece of furniture. 3 auction houses have rejected it - I paid lots for it and now it has just been rejected as a donation to a major UK charity. I refuse to destroy it after 200 years and I also do not want my children to be left with it - it is very big and fitted all the DVDs etc and is now empty in the garage. Videos like this make me get on with this kind of sortint out.

There are many things I appreciate about this channel: your compassion for people with hoarding disorders and other mental illnesses, your deadpan snark, and your willingness to hire chipmunks. Most people wouldn't, you know. There's a real anti-chipmunk bias out there in the workforce.

The way that you explained a deceased persons view of an item, for those who have faith in an afterlife or not, was brilliant. Better than any psychologist I’ve ever heard. God put you here to do this work.
@rdklkje13

Well, he did leave out reincarnation. Not saying anyone should keep stuff around for the eventuality that a kid connected to the consciousness of a deceased person happens to turn up at some point, but not mentioning this means he made half a point that could have been more complete. Also, if you have memory issues you may remember your mum without that teddy bear, but not a lot of details without such visual reminders, making such decisions even harder.

I lived with a hoarder for over 50 yrs. His famous saying to me was after he died I could clean everything up-all his stuff. He passed away on a Thursday and by the following Tuesday everything was clean and it’s been that way since. Our youngest son made probably more than nine dump trips. Any of his clothes that were good went to Goodwill. His famous saying was he might need it someday about all the crap that he kept. A lot of resentment on my behalf, but time heals those wounds. Hoarding is a terrible disease.

My mom passed away 6 months ago. She stayed with us and she was a bit of a hoarder, things she had for more than 30 years. It was very emotional to me to sort out her room, and it took me 2 months to complete it, because of getting emotional everytime I started, but I knew I had to do it. I only kept a few sentimental things and all her books she wrote in and her poems she wrote

Absolutely. Anything you are not using on a daily or weekly basis - ask your kids NOW if they want it. If not, get rid of it - donate it if possible - if it’s junk, just toss it. You will feel like you lost 10 pounds. At one point we had several antiques - our eldest took a couple of pieces - are youngest wasn’t interested. Chances are your kids don’t want your stuff, so clear it out if you aren’t using it and free up your space.

This video brought back so many memories for me. My grandmother in law was a hoarder (depression era baby), and she was so bad she'd save the plastic containers cakes came in from the grocery store, washed cups from fast food places (yes, cardboard ones), and so on. EVERYTHING had a story and if you tried to throw anything away, she'd go to the garbage can and pick it back out. Her daughter, my MIL, was the same. EVERY single bouquet of flowers her husband of fifty years ever bought her was found still in the vases dried out all in the garage and dining room table of her house. Every outfit, pair of shoes, purse, old medications, make up, etc...nothing was tossed. When both she and my GIL passed, it took us weeks to go through everything and discard it. My husband passed two years ago, and I'm finally getting to the finish line on clearing out the garage that was his man cave (I absolutely wouldn't deal with all the stuff in the house). It's so very sad that this condition exists for people; husband, MIL and GIL all would go into serious break down and get extremely defensive if you tried to even talk to them about clearing out some of the clutter. I even feel guilty that I'm giving away or tossing out my husband's belongings that I don't need/want due to the memories of his and his family's reactions of the past. My heart goes out to the homeowner here and I pray he can find some peace now.

Dear Rhianna Pantsless Playing With Nineties Toys Johnny from Seattle, Your heart is so kind. Everything you did in that house (and all your houses) was aimed at making the client feel better. My prayer for this guy is that this will motivate him to move forward with decluttering everything and to continue to lose weight. He’s obviously such a strong guy to have done so much considering all of the challenges he’s had to face. Your decluttering and his significant weight loss is so symbolic (literally and figuratively) of lightening the load or burden. You’re helping free him from a heavy prison. Love your videos and look forward to seeing more in this house next week. 😃

This week I cleaned my house using the Midwest-Magic-Cleaning method, by looking only at 1 square meter and clearing that, before moving on to the next. It helped a lot. Mind you, we have decluttering our house last year because we didn't want to let our kids having this burden when the eventual thing is going to happen and we're going to hell. But when you've still got 2 (of our 5) kids living in the house (both adults) and their friends coming over regularly, our house always seems full, so it's nice that my closets and cabinets and store rooms are neat ... and stay neat.

Throw in my house burning down 8 years ago and then losing my 17 year old dog a week before being in lockdown for 6 months in 2020 and I have a hard time dealing with the loss and grief. He's making some really tough decisions on shifting the junk from his home & his trunk & commiting to following through & that's so hard to do but so rewarding in the end! I know you go through every item but I don't think I could let you go though all my stuff without me there, I have trust issues from people who have helped me tidy in the past when I've been struggling & overwhelmed & the minute they thought I wasn't looking, they threw away piles without going through it & I ended up looking like a crazy woman going through the bags in the bin just to save a couple of small but irreplaceable items 🙈 it's motivation not to let it get that bad again though so it's all good ☺️

This is such a kindness. We all deal with a passing so differently and have different needs. I lost my dad suddenly this past august and his wife threw away most of his belongings without me and my siblings, she just cleaned everything out. In my country she’s can’t legally do that because we all own everything collectively, but she didn’t care. My point is, I feel cheated out of processing some of my grief by sorting through his clothes, finding things I forgot about, his old watches, favourite shirts etc. To me, that would have felt therapeutic and a last sort of closeness with my dad

What really helped me with being able to get rid of things throughout my life was going through Hurricane Andrew in 1992. We lost our home and everything in it. Basically had to start over. I was 19. It is very sad when someone dies. We cleared our parents' house of 50 years. They weren't messy and my mother went first and my father then had the whole place repainted and new windows and decking before he got sick but after 50 years inthe same place you have so much stuff. I would encourage everyone to have very special family things like old photos and papers somewhere clearly marked so they are not lost. My father had an 1867 letter to his grandfather from his grandfather's father and 1890s photos which are now in my house and also scanned. The first thing I cleared out was my father's incontinence pads. Every cupboard I opened had clean packs of them. It was like fantasia film - you cut some down and more appear. Then I personally unscrewed and pulled out the whole of the chair lift. I think I wanted the house removed of all evidence of those awful years of decline and back to the happy home of healthy people it used to be.

Just found your channel. I am watching it with interest. When I see a hoarder house and someone is walking around with no shoes and white socks, well, just gotta keep watching. Thanks, I am chuckling.

I'm a new subscriber and have been watching quite a few of your videos. I must praise you and your crew for doing such a good job on difficult situations. I have worked in physical therapy 30+ years and have done home health for 20 if those years. Please next time you come across walkers or canes/crutches that are not bent or broken donate them as someone will get use out of them. Medical equipment can be expensive and insurance does not always cover the costs. I do love your sense of humour☺️

I use lemon oil on stainless sinks, faucets, and the inside of shower doors after cleaning. It helps keep hard water from building back up in the shower and on faucets and makes shinys. Plus, it smells nice. 😊

i’m super grateful to have come across this video. which oddly enough was while i was cleaning my house lol. it just auto played like the algorithm knew i was cleaning. 😅 i’ll def be sharing these tips while i’m helping to clean my parents stuff which includes some of their parents stuff still. i enjoy helping them to declutter. and i know it’s less stressful for me since i don’t have the same memories or any memories attached to some of the items. we are still slowly cleaning out my brothers stuff too. he passed 3 years ago. so i will keep what you said in mind❤

We found a large deep freeze full of food in my MIL’s laundry room-a laundry room we had been using for years. We were stunned. There was so much clothing piled up in there and hanging everywhere. When she went into the nursing home we started cleaning out the hoarded house and that’s when we uncovered the packed deep freeze. Crazy!!!

Bless you for what you do to help these families. This one hit close to home... we are at the tale end of cleaning out my in-laws house. My MIL passed away last year and then my FIL passed away at the end of June. He was a hoarder. He had piles and piles and piles of papers. It was him that was the hoarder. I thought it was bad until I watched some of your hoarder cleaning videos. My husband and BIL just wanted to "throw everything away" and they did for the most part. I like to have a few trinkets from them because I remember them and cherish my relationship with them. We had a wrench thrown in because both my in-laws were heavy smokers so that was also a reason to throw so much away. Anything we brought home we have to store in the garage for awhile hoping the smoke smell goes away. Any tips on getting rid of smoke smell?

Wow watching this and listening to this story brings me right into the same category I myself lost my mom with cancer ten years ago and I am the same way I got everything of hers and I don't want to get rid of things that belonged to her but in my case there was no estate it was just household items and knick-knack galore which I still have pretty much everything but I'm trying to lighten the load because my house is declining so I feel that gentlemans pain😢 I do have siblings but they do not bother with me or talk to me since my mother's death and my father's been gone long before my mother so it does get pretty sad and lonely and thank God for a guy like you helping him out . I've been trying to get an aide to come in but seems like everything keeps getting turned down which does not make no sense when I can barely walk or stand up. Thank God I have my little puppy he has been a lifesaver crazy with nobody to talk to

My mother was like this (and unfortunately, all of us kids got a touch of it too). Part of my problem was that, while she was a hoarder (a very neat one), most of her things were really really nice! Her laundry room was full to the brim with to-go boxes, plastic bottle caps and recipe books, but she also had beautiful and unique art pieces, jewelry and furniture. It was so hard going through it all. I took so much and find myself letting go of a little more each year.

Do you ever put things out on the wall or just at the end of your garden, that you think other people may be able to use. I do that and 90% of it gets taken away by someone who wants its - recycling at its best.

Question: I’ve been an emotional collector for a while now…I’ve recognized this and tried to take it on in tiny bits….it’s just too overwhelming and I just get tired and plop down in my comfort space. So many unfinished projects. There is a woman who wants to rent one of my farm houses but it’s just so much. Anyhoo yes I’m a decade deep into therapy. Cheers and cheers. 😊
