this hits home so much My mother is learning English as well, she feels that she cant speak English, despite me understanding what she says in English. Mother should have learned her English, for herself. Not to impress upon him or his friends!! How low u can become, to confine ur Mother to her room, because she does know ENGLISH!! Good, you touched this subject. There are loads of youngsters who carry this stupid taboo and ill treat parents infront of peers and their colleges. I still vividly a friend of mine who was a neurosurgeon in Madras Medical College and his wife was a professor in Economics. They migrated to England in 80's and settled in London. Their elder girl was a medical student in Oxford and the younger was a medico in Cambride. Both girls did not allow their parent to visit them in their college. They did not want their brown skin coloured dad & mom to be introduced to the predominantly white campuses. Now, this disease is profound even in our rural boys and girls. It is really sad and pathetic.
