After combing through my video archives again, I found the following footage, recorded from August of 1999 thru April of 2000, at Paramount Kings Island. Construction was well under way for the new-for-2000 Son of Beast record breaking wooden coaster and the park was kind enough to give enthusiast a few tours to see a very up close and personal look at building the largest wooden coaster ever.......well, until something larger comes along, if that happens.

I feel honored and lucky to have ridden that coaster. I actually loved it, was the best woody I have ever been on. I loved its overpowering force and speed. The giant helixes were out of this world. But it did help that I was young and in good shape to enjoy it’s roughness and I guess there’s the rub for some riders. What a shame that corners were cut during its design and construction. If only it was done correctly we’d still be enjoying it today.

I had mixed reviews about the ride. I did know it was capable of giving out some decent rides. However, most of my rides were sub-par and the only time I would ride the coaster was when I was an extra for video shoots and when someone from out of town wanted to check it out. Do I miss the ride? Not at all. Do I feel for those that do miss the ride? Yes. Absolutely.

I’m probably one of the few who miss that ride. I know it was a problem child, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for it...and a sharp pain in my back from it

This is one coaster I’m thankful to have never gotten a chance to ride. I remember reading about Son of Beast in a book about Roller Coasters when I was young, and thought it looked pretty cool with it being over 200 feet tall and featuring a vertical loop, hoping one day I would get a chance to ride it. At first I was sad that I never got a chance to ride it before it was demolished, but after hearing about how painfully rough it was, not to mention was built by an incompetent manufacturer, and even had a horrific accident back in 2006, I’m thankful I wasn’t one of the unlucky few who got beaten up and tossed around by this monstrosity which Paramount should never have tasked RCCA with building in the first place. I’ve ridden some rough-as-hell wooden coasters like Mighty Canadian Minebuster in Canada’s Wonderland, Le Monstré at La Ronde, and even El Toro at Six Flags Great Adventure a month before it had another accident, but I feel as though Son of Beast would’ve legit tried to knock me unconscious. I know some people who enjoyed the ride are pretty upset that it’s gone now, but really it was for the better, because this ride was rough as balls, not to mention a literal recipe for disaster, especially with the 2006 accident. At least they replaced it with an awesome B&M Invert named Banshee, however the rest of the area where SoB stood has yet to be filled. Same with the old Vortex plot. Hopefully something from either MACK Rides or Vekoma (or both, idk) can fill in those empty spaces, and thus increase Kings Island’s number of coasters to 16.
@SeanFlaharty
@SeanFlaharty Год назад
I have a lot of mixed feelings about SoB. Almost all of my rides were taken during video shoots where I was an extra rider. I don't doubt I got in at least a couple hundred rides just from those video shoots alone. Most of those rides were rough. I had a few rides where the ride wasn't bad at all. I ended up swearing off the ride after my second ride without the loop. The ride had become even rougher in my opinion and I just didn't see a point in riding it again as my favorite part of the ride no longer was there. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be allowed access to watch this thing be built.

That terrain blows my mind. Did they ever talk about the elevation changes with respect to the ground? It looks like the lowest point is the valley where the drop and loop are. I'd love to know more about those details. Also, how tall is the drop before the loop?
@SeanFlaharty
@SeanFlaharty Год назад
The park never really talked much about the terrain. You are correct. The lowest part of the ride was at the bottom of the first drop and loop. I wish I could remember how tall that drop into the loop was. I remember the park talking about it but I can't find anything online. I do know the coaster was designed that the train would hit loop at 62mph each time. If the ride was running slow or stopped in the block brake before the loop, there were drive tires that would speed the train up a bit before that drop so it would hit 62mph. Out of the hundreds of rides I took on that thing, I was only stopped one time in the block brake area and was able to experience the drive tire boost.

@SeanFlaharty Год назад
Considering all the issues with Intamin pre-fabs, I don't know if it would have lasted as long as the park would hope. Especially what happened to ElToro recently. It had a track segment dip as Son of Beast did. I know the park talked to other manufactures but it was too late.
@askjeevescosby2928
@askjeevescosby2928 Год назад
@@SeanFlaharty the reason they are having issues is six flags cheaped out and didn't maintain the ride as they should that ride should have been completely retracked years ago, just as any other wooden coaster

@SeanFlaharty Год назад
@@askjeevescosby2928 Yes and no. While it does look like the maintenance wasn't ideal, those Intamin Pre-fabs take a lot to retrack It wasn't as easy as parks thought it would be when they purchased them. Replacing the track on them isn't like replacing the track on a normal wooden coaster. It's quite complicated but ElToro certainly was overdue for a total track rebuild. I haven't been to the park since the year it opened so I can't comment on how rough it had gotten before the incident.
@askjeevescosby2928

@@SeanFlaharty but doing nothing which is what it looks like they did isn't a way to keep a ride running well.
@SeanFlaharty
@SeanFlaharty Год назад
@@askjeevescosby2928 There was very little they could do without a significant rebuild or retrofit. The ride was engineered poorly and the ride had sub-par lumber. The park sued the builder because of it. It was an absolute nightmare for the park. After they removed the loop, the ride didn't have much of a purpose in my opinion. I only rode it twice without the loop. Hundreds of times before the loop was removed. Even after riding it so many times, it was never one of my favorites. I just happened to be an extra for several video shoots and was able to take rides during those. Lol.

@@williamjones7589 Had they gotten the ride RMC'ed soon after they closed it, I am not sold that it would have been the greatest as the early RMC designs were great, but the new ones really show off what they can do. Honestly I think wooden coasters have a limit of how big they can get. I doubt a wooden giga will ever happen. It's far too much speed and force on the track, far too much maintenance for hundreds of thousands of feet of wood to inspect, it just doesn't make financial sence to make wooden coasters this large.
@SeanFlaharty
