Son of The South is A MESS | Explained in 7 Minutes 

Hey. I met Bob. Haven't seen the movie, but from what this sounds like here the movie doesn't do who he really is service. He never positions himself as a savior in the movement, just a guy who was there and wanted to do his part. And trust me, when you are with him you are eager to hear everything you can about his experiences interacting with these legends of the movement. In no way does he lift himself up, but speaks of them with reverence and awe.

This whole "observe another culture in the natural habitat assignment" still happens. When one of my friends was in grad school she was assigned some foolishness exactly like this. When I refused to participate with her, she was forced to reckon with the idea that it treats people and their worship spaces like animals in a zoo.

The movie wasn't horrible, the interracial couple was cute, and it's a true story for the most part.

Lol. I am amused that I found this review. I just watched the movie last night and while it was entertaining, some parts were cringy, others just offensive: 1) The casual way which how they treated the KKK. “Grandaddy was a wizard in the KKK, oh, and so was my dad, but a black church choir in Russia changed his mind” Huh??? At some point Bob’s “grandaddy” even says he would put a bullet in his grandson’s head (Bob) if he continues to help the cause, and Bob just let it slide like is nothing. WTF???? 2) They made Rosa Parks look like this calculated anti hero, part of some sort of secret society (whose real leader in the movie was white by the way). That was offensive to me. 3) Then there’s Joanne. How convenient that the lightest skinned black woman in the movie happens to be the most smart and educated, and ofcourse she has a thing for southern white boys, who come from a lineage of KKK members, who’s hair happen to smell like chicken (what was the point of that????). 4) When they’re about to hang Bob, they seem to show images that made it look like these white boys have actually hung and murdered people, including other whites. Yet, Bob didn’t seem to have a problem with that, given that the movie shows he was still somewhat amicable towards these people. It doesn’t seem like Bob’s motivating factor was the injustices of racial segregation, but that he just wanted to be a good boy. Pretty weird.

I hate the part where Joana talks about France, ssaying that the white people there were different, not really white... Like, what? France supported Hitler... Europeans are just as racist as North Americans... This movie was just so bad! And I'm brazilian, I don't even know that much about the civil rights moviment, but I know enough to be really angry to see Rose Parks beign a secondary character!

About Rosa Parks: the civil right movement had many heroes. So the point of all those civil right movements movies is to show different perspectives. We all know that Rosa parks was and will always be a great symbol of the movement but this movie is telling another story You cannot expect that all people like Rosa Parks, MLK Jr and many other people have to be in all these movies if they don’t contribute to the story.

I knew this movie was trash the second I saw the trailer. I guess it’s even worse than I thought. 💀

I agree with your sentiment that the movie was weak. However I do think this was made for TV movie and you know things had to be whitewashed and this is a white man's story so all those things you mentioned were right on spot. Yet I am from Montgomery in fact I was born at Saint Jude's hospital all those things that were shot at Montgomery have special meaning for me specially the bus scenes which that bus station is the same one that I left Montgomery in 1964 with my mother and sister. The scenes that was shot at Tuskegee University are special because I work at the University when I came back to Alabama. I can't say that it does not hold to be true however that scene at the bus station was I'm sure more violent in reality.

just finished watching this movie and .. it was weird. most of the time the dialogues didn't sound like real dialogues. and i agree on the fact that while bob is a real person who fought for a just cause, it's just translated to the screen like "here is the white superhero who saves the day because nobody else would be able to do the same things he does, oh yeah there's rosa parks too but she gets 3 seconds of screen time". (still thinking about joanne complimenting the french for being "french and not white" so .. not racist?? lmao .. in EUROPE??? judging from the amount of racism present in Europe at the moment, i can only imagine what was the situation like back in the 60s)
