Great job of catching the feel of the song. Walking down Main Street Getting to know the concrete Looking for a purpose From a neon sign I would meet you anywhere The western sun meets the air We'll hit the road Never looking behind Maybe the best opening line of any song. And it doesn't fall off afterward.

Shared this thought with a nephew, he said "ah the elders circle" coming from the Midwest and heard this, experienced recessions, but fortunate. My response "No, just we knew our stories previously written and today's stories represented a value, good or bad, that were held close to the chest. No need to impress, our lives represented us...not the sounds we make". I will also add, the pics in this video are like a family video from my grandparents and mom. I've watched it like I read historical pieces on this moment. Listen so much more than read, the sound and pics timeless and soothing to a troubled soul....mine and the world. This song captures it all, not sure if the words/song were a lament for moments never lived but heard. Writing a beautiful piece, both words and sound.

Such a kind comment to make. Different songs can strike people different ways. This song for some reason makes me feel and think about my childhood as we were poor and moved around a lot. But then I thought about the people that really were hurt much more than me as my Mom had told me stories about her growing up during the Great Depression and how it was. I wanted my video to tell the stories of these children and their families that struggled through that time. I guess the message of the song to me is that there sometimes there is so much pain in life no one else can really understand or feel it, even the Saints. Again, I am humbled by your praise of this work. Thank you so much.

The lyrics are opaque, and are open to any number of interpretations, but your montage has 'fixed' the song's meaning for me - now I'll always associate this song with the Great Depression. Great job, btw.

Never heard of this song, nor the musician. What a beautiful piece of art this is. Such intense music and lyrics that really tells a story, The pictures, that go with this song are telling their own stories and go so well with it. I am Dutch, but I wish my mother-tongue was English, I would write a poem about this masterpiece.

Thank you so much for your kind reply. I really love this Son Volt song too. Songs I really love I attempt to find the imagery it evokes in me, and then I seek that imagery to go with the song. Jay Farrah is the singer in Son Volt. Before Son Volt, Jay was in a band called Uncle Tupelo. Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt are part of a genre of American music called "Alt Country". It is said that Alt Country began in America with the musician Gram Parsons in the 1968 Byrds LP. "Sweetheart of the Rodeo". Musicians like Jay Farrah are called "Descendants of Gram Parsons". The Alt Country music of the late 1960's were listened to by hippies and was also called " Long Haired Country". Some other 1960's bands introducing this music was Poco, which included two members of the original Buffalo Springfield, also The New Riders of the Purple Sage. The mood of the Alt Country music is most usually set by steel guitar, vocal harmonies,, stories in song about people's lives, and a mournful soulful sound. I highly recommend you check into Gram Parsons and his influence on music. I made a new friend recently in his mid 40's that is the head of the local university History Department, and he told me how he had just recently heard and found out about Gram Parsons and how he was blown away and loved it so much, and he wondered how he was just now finding it !!! Gram Parsons was a huge influence on Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. His influence helped to create the Rolling Stones songs "Wild Horses" and "Dead Flowers". Again, thank you so much for taking the time to make your kind comment. I will attach to your comment here a link to a RU-vid playlist of great Alt Country music to give you an introduction. A good bottle of wine and a pleasant evening with this playlist is Heaven !!

Don Winter , " the working class" really.. What a pompous thing to say. Maybe the Great Depression, devastation from acts of nature..
@donwinter8110
@donwinter8110 6 лет назад
I'm not sure why my praise of the work was "pompous." The images are of working class people during the Great Depression. Soup kitchens. Bread lines. The greatest devastation wreaked by the Great Depression was from economic causes, and the hardest hit were millions of working class people.
