Son who witnessed father's death testifies in Craigslist sale murder trial

James Beck, 44, and his 15-year-old son, Stuart thought they were going to sell a dirtbike they listed on Craigslist, back in January 2017. Instead, prosecutors say Dontae Johnson and Ramontrae Williams killed Beck in front of his son.
Johnson and co-defendant Ramontrae Williams responded to the ad and Beck drove from Holiday to Tampa make the sale, but prosecutors say when Johnson handed Beck a wad of cash, it wasn't the amount they agreed to and Beck returned the money. Stuart, one of the first witnesses to take the stand Tuesday, says that's when Johnson pulled out a gun and both father and son ran to their truck.

A child should never have to scream "Don't die!" to their parents. This is awful but thank god Stuart is alright and nothing happened to him, I can't imagine the fear his father felt during his last moments not knowing what would happen to his son.

Craigslist is dangerous. Its best to deal in the day time in a public location. Depending on how valuable the item is its best to exchange money inside a business. Some people go to the police station. If they are not willing to do that they are not legit.

Never trust 13/52 when you’re on Craigslist. This is the 2nd story I’ve seen where a man was murdered after trying to sell a dirt bike to a 13/52. Another recent Craigslist story are two 13/52 men who were hired as truck drivers from a Craigslist ad and they robbed the people at gunpoint lol

Johnson was found guilty and sentenced to 40 years. His partner Williams who grabbed the bike got a plea deal for going against Johnson, 12 years prison and then 10 years probation.

Friday June 25, 2021, the jury deliberated for 90 minutes then returned a guilty verdict for first-degree murder and armed robbery. Friday, July 30, 2021, Johnson was sentenced to 40 years in prison with a minimum sentence of 25 years.

@SAK Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean no one else’s lives matter. It means Black people are disproportionately killed at higher rates than White people in America. It is the response to centuries of slavery, racism, discrimination, etc. You randomly mentioning BLM says more about you than BLM. With that being said, as a Black woman, I believe those two deserve to spend life in prison. A waste of a life. Anyone who can take the life of a person in front of their child needs to live in agony for the rest of their natural life. When you're in a high stakes trial like this it is imperative to get the facts correct, they need to be absolutely sure that the people are guilty and showing this recording not only to the son but the jury is very important as the prosecutors. How it works is they play the recording and pause when they have questions for the son like "you said this, what exactly happened as you saw right now". or somewhere along the lines of that.

Also are judicial system may be flawed, but still one of the best in the world. According to the testimony one of the men handed the money back to the father, it was the other one who pulled a gun and there is no evidence that I have seen or heard to indicate the man who handed the money back even knew his buddy was going to pull a gun. But, maybe he told the police or just confessed that he was aware of robbery would take place. So he still gets 12 years. I don't have a problem with a 12-year sentence for someone who can inspired to commit a robbery, maybe a set up from the beginning, but who was not the shooter.
