In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ru-vid.comUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

Just got my first GPS/Fish-finder, a Hook 7 Reveal and I was working through the menus, getting more and more frustrated, then I stumbled on this page! Thank you so much, these videos are great and I learned more in an hour than I had in the previous week! Since I fish the ocean, outside the barrier islands, I need to react fast and accurately as conditions change quickly. Loving my Hook 7 now, THANKS.

Thanks Mike, this is great. Exactly what I needed. I have asked others about where the fish are: underneath the boat or on the side, where are they when on the screen. They don't really know, but you're grayscale to the right the A scope really tells most everything. Like you said the rest is history where you been that's not necessarily where you're fishing. I look forward to future videos.

I enjoyed the video. No one else seems to know for sure how depth finders work. Thank you! I have my transducer mounted on bottom of electric motor. I use the big motor (175 Mecury) to travel to areas I want to fish. I put the electric motor down into the water when I stop to fish an area. So with the electric motor running, I am not going fast enough to generate arches, right? The fish on the screen are mostly short, straight lines, right? I have old black and white screen Fish Mark 480 dept finder. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the video! Like other comments, I'm new and bought two 9" Lowrance that don't mean a lot yet cause I can't figure out how to use them. Couple questions (I'll watch more of your videos to see if you answer these questions): how do you know how far back your history is on the screen and which side it on? I imagine this is a function of the speed you're going. Put another way, let's say you're going 10 mph with a white screen and all of sudden you see 4 objects that appear to be fish. Would you shut off the motor and fish straight off the back or turn the boat around and go back in the exact opposite line? Kinda similar to above question, how do you know exactly when you're at the bottom of a drop off...where there may be fish? Thanks again!

Hey man. Great videos, very informative. I work in the oil and gas industry. We use a lot of seismic acquisition which is to all intents and purposes the same as marine sonar. There are a few things you went over that don't really make sense to me. You mention the size of the cone depends on the frequency you are shooting at. I'm not sure that's exactly true. The size of the cone is basically dictated by the transducer design, not by frequency. In Seismic acquisition, the frequency you shoot at is very important. We look at something called the Fresnell Zone which concerns the properties of a seismic wave as it propagates and the effective resolution of the wave. Typically, in oil and gas, you can resolve targets down to about 1/4 the wavelength you fire at; assuming full returns. So this means higher frequencies have much better resolution and this is why you use them, in marine sonar, in shallow water and side scan etc. The problem though is higher frequency waves attenuate/weaken much faster than lower frequency waves. This is why lower frequency waves are much better in deep water. You may shoot at a higher frequency in deep water and think you're getting no returns because the cone is smaller but the reality is the cone remains pretty much the same size and you are seeing no returns because the wave has attentuated/weakened. Theoretically you could try and get around this by having far more powerful sources/transducers but it becomes an issue with power consumption, not to mention environmental impact etc. It's also useful to think of a seismic wave as a ripple travelling across a pond. In a homogenous situation, the wave expands in a perfectly circular fashion away from the source and the energy of the wave therefore reduces as the wave expands. So the same fish in shallow water may have a bright return and the return will become duller and duller as a function of distance from the transducer. Also, due to the circular expansion of the wave, a fish with a bright return directly below the transducer at a certain depth, will have a duller return at the same depth as you move away horizontally, assuming it's within the cone, as the distance from the transducer is further and the wave has therefore attenuated/weakened more.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
+FoxMcScrooge Sure, there are plenty of transducer designes that are set at one specific frequency, (I have a high WIDE transducer that Airmar built to be wide all the time, even in high frequency). but standard (and the most common SportFishing transducers) use narrower cones in the higher frequency and wider in the lower.

Great video thank you! Question, what needs to be adjusted if the fish are dots instead of arches, or am I looking at different types of fish?

You probably have your interference filter on. Turn it off and see if it’s better. There is a link in the description on setting up your sonar. Check it out. 👍👍

Hello Mike, Thanks for all your informative videos. I'm upgrading my sounders for this years Northern California salmon fishing season. We typically do not fish more than 100 feet deep. Many experienced locals say the best transducer is the 275 LHW. I have ordered one. I'm running Garmin electronics. I'm pretty much limited to transom mounting on my 27' Whaler with twin 300hp. Primarily we fish by locating bait and hoping salmon are feeding on them. However, some people say these 1000w transducers can mark salmon. I don't know what frequency is best for making salmon though. My question is would you recommend a mid range transducer too such as the TM 185 or is this overkill and the 300w TM150 would be sufficient. Also, how do you run multiple transducers simultaneously without interference with each other? Thanks

@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
If the Garmin behaves close to Simrad you will be able to mark salmon. We are able to mark Mackerel which have similar air bladder problems. You won’t need the Low at all at those depths. Just get this one. amzn.to/2XDLJw7. It just has the high wide frequency range. It’s great in your depths. You would never need the low band in less than 600 feet.

I watched the series, SUPER HELPFUL. I'm looking for a video on how a fish finder can be used to help with success on trolling for trout in lakes. I see many vids on trolling... but none where a fish finder is part of the game. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

subscribed and notifications....... I have been using my expensive Lowrance Elite 9ti for mostly depth and water temp (huge waste of money unless I can get some help with it and the reps in the store where I bought it were worthless)... and, I am partially colorblind (so, palate might be difficult... I need colors that contrast... and so far that look good on the screen, I see yellows).. and I am watching to hopefully be able to start getting more out of my expensive toy.... I fish primarily inshore waters of North Florida Jacksonville area for Speckled Seatrout, Redfish and Flounder.... with currents moving and mostly in 9 feet of water or less.... and is what we see is the history and we passed over a fish, I am guessing that we have to double back to it? cast behind the boat? I mostly use my trolling motor to run the banks and cast to structure, docks and rocks, etc... I am hoping that watching your series will help me with insight in recognizing where fish might lay up... I have the total side scan thing but dont understand it... I like to RECON areas to at low tide just to see what might be under the water at higher tides... what I hope to get out of your videos is some knowledge that I can then take to the water and apply... thanks for posting, on to video 2

This scean shot is the history as you said. But in reality is it a thick swatch depending on the depth. So if your trying to find structure, and you need to pass by again and again and move over bit by bit. How far over do you move over so you don't overlap too bad or miss too much of a view of the bottom?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
Every transducer is different so you would have to know your cone width and do some math depending on depth. I use side scan for looking because of the wider coverage and the display shows exactly how far to the sides you are “looking”.

im brand new to fishing. I have a fish finder that is just simple lcd with a backlight. I am trying to learn how to read it as well as how to fish with it. Obviously if I get a beep on the unit, and I cast out 20 feet from the boat. I am not going to be near it. So do I just flick the worm off the back of the boat and let it sink straight down? So far all I have done is catch spotted bass, bluegills and catfish casting onto waters edge and bringing it slowly back to the boat. I really would love to learn how to catch something in deep water like in the middle of the lake.

If your boat is moving ahead slowly the fish will be in your wake directly behind the boat. 👍👍

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I just got my 1st boat and have no idea how to use that little lowrance hook it came with. I doubt it has all the good options, kind of seems basic but maybe it has the sensitivity setting and stuff. Never messed with it much honestly. It definitely doesn't show the half moon for fish tho. Everything looks like little speckles. I'll mess with it on my next trip out
