Two years ago we had a blackbird that would come to sit on our chimney and sing at exactly 6pm, i really liked him and named him Marcus ☺ i hope that wherever he is, hes doing well 🐦
awwww that's cute! i have a pair that live in my garden. the male one is not scared of me at all, rather the other way around with me making sure not to annoy him 😂 i put out some bird seed mix and suet, ocassionally some fruit or whatever - he just zooms out of the bushes and starts eating it when i'm right next to him... i try stay still cause i'm a bit scared as he fights off the wood pigeons and even the 2 magpies that live next door 😂 none of them even attempt to fight back hahaha, i just hope they'll stay safe for even more years here 🙂
We have had the same pair live in a bush in our garden for four years now. They are extremely cute, especially the male who is also very friendly and curious. They are currently looking after their second lot of babies this season. Looking forward to having them here for many more years to come.
I never realized how relaxing the sound of the Blackbird is until now, I'd like to think I'm quite a mellow person and where I live is absolutely flocked with Blackbirds, Sparrows, Magpies, Wood Pigeons, Pheasants, occasionally some birds of prey (We see them circling the crescent I like on at least once a year), Robins and more. And I sleep fantastically during Spring and Summer thanks to the call of our Virtuoso community of Blackbirds.
I miss the calls of our once plenty pheasant. So few farmers have left the scrub/brushlines of the past, in their complete efficiency. I do have a plethora of other birds to enjoy, especially barn owls in old buildings, on the farm in the mid Willamette Valley of Oregon. For decades we have aided a local farmers Co op of collecting owl pellets for a school program . 🌞
I go to work at 5.40am and at the moment when i open the door the sound is amazing, I can hear so many birds singing. The blackbird that calls our garden home sits atop of our flag pole for most of the morning singing away.
I'm jealous! I used to get the morning chorus, but now I live near the sea.i have to go inland to hear this beautiful music. Living by the sea isn't all it's cracked up to be! Silence is good, but my heart lifts whenever I heard the song of blackbird. My friends look at me strange when I say "hello Mr. Black"!!
I feed a male blackbird in my garden cat food every so often and he comes right up to me making the sounds at 0:52 non stop! Very handsome little laddy
I've seen blackbirds being called "bully birds". They're often lumped in with starlings. I don't find them the bullying type at all. My blackbird visitors are far from it, they don't scare away any other species. In fact I've often seen them side by side with a robin in my garden.
We have a black bird who is retuning for the third year. He comes to the kitchen window and when it is open comes in and helps himself from an open currant bag. He often sings to us when he has finished eating and shows no fear and makes eye contact. This year he appears not to have young as in other years he took a break full of raisins and kept returning several times a day. He really has bonded with my sister and l am sure knows her.
Great video. I loved seeing the chick being fed. I've spent a small fortune so far this year on mealworms for them to feed their chicks with which I give to them by hand at my kitchen window. It's so relaxing to do that, the complete opposite of stress.
Thank you James, I also spend a small fortune on live mealworms. I get through as much as two kilograms a week when the birds have young ones to feed, but they are worth it for the pleasure they give me.
One was singing here until about 20 mins ago. It's now dark so the birds have gone to roost. He'll start up again around 5am or earlier. Guaranteed to have my cats jumping up at the window. Don't worry. The birds are safe. All my cats are indoor cats only. I love the sound of the dawn chorus led by the lovely Blackbird. Same goes for the evensong. So relaxing.
When I hear their distress call I am on the look for cats prowling around. One time I saw one in our garden trying to climb up our trellis early in the morning so I lobbed a shoe in it's direction (No harm inflicted) Cat ran off, Blackbirds then calmed down so I went back to sleep
Thanks, that was a great video. I have a question. Our situation is that the people that live next to me brought a baby blackbird to us that was too young to be out of the nest and there was a string of hot days ahead (around 40 degrees celcius) and plenty of predators about. We re-hydrated and fed it, but as here in Australia blackbirds are considered pests and can't be released, the only legal options we had were to either have the bird destroyed or to keep it ourselves, so we're now raising it. We've had it for about 5 days now and it's now a fledgling. Today it's started to try to make difference vocalisations to me other than just the standard baby bird noises. It almost sounded like it trying to very quietly sing. As it only has its baby feathers, will I be able to sex it by its vocal calls before it gets adult feathering?
+Sam S (CupcakeCaper) Hi Sam, at that young an age there is no easy way that I know of to tell the sex of your young blackbird. In the later stages as a juvenile you may be able to notice that the male has a darker appearance that a female and can look remarkably like an adult female. There is not really any visual, behavioural or vocal differences at this early stage , it looks as if you will have to weight until its first moult in the autumn.
I live in the countryside and as I type I can hear a dozen different birds. One of them has a very distinct call which I keep noticing, and it sounds like the title lyrics to the song 'Morning has broken' by Cat Stevens. Googling it now, to find if that was the inspiration, I find this video, and also that the word blackbird is in the second line of the song. I'm sure this is widely known, but it's news to me, having not really heard much birdsong until my recent move out to the countryside.
Thank you very much, I had your vid in my playlist for birdsongs, listened to it, but until today, I've never viewed it! And I found funny how (at 2:03) the "baby" bird fed by his mother, seems fatter than her!!
I played this to a blackbird in your yard. It immediately made itself bigger, went to more protective spot and even after a while run from hiding spot to another where as before I played this, it was calmly wondering around. I wonder what was the bird saying in the video! :)
Thanks for Sharing, and very useful indeed as I'm using the audio to play to a nestling we had to rescue after their nest was discovered and destroyed by a magpie, we hard the commotion but we got to the nest to late for his 4 sibling, but at least the smallest one is doing well now, he only survived the raid as he was pushed to the bottom of the nest by his bigger siblings who thought it was food coming. Finding enough worms, which blackbirds seems to find easy, is giving us bigger problems, we're not worried by the 20-30 minutes feeding routine, oher than that everything seems to be going fine, fingers crossed...
Beautiful. Here on the south coast of Victoria, Australia the same species of Blackbird sings at dawn and at dusk. You can hear the male and the female echoing back and forth as if to welcome the sun each morning and to farewell the daylight. A delight.
Thank you Mark, yes it does have a beautiful song. I was just reading about the introduction of the European Blackbird in the 1860s and how well it has established itself in South Australia and Tasmania.
Thank you so much! I have blackbird couples in rare public garden space in Central London and leave food on my third floor 'escarpment' for them...I love watching mothers and fathers on their reconaissance missions, as they land on aspects of the high buildings here, and the de-coding of communication de-coded is an 'ear opener'...
dulik apa aku....jangan scam aku.... -:don't worry rupa akan tanggal dulu ...macam aku ni, jadi macam orang India....jangan confident sangat....orang cina ade kena macam tu....dah jadi macam orang melayu, India takde siapa kesah....tu masuk lokap haritu....makin kena kutuk.... kalau dia putih berebut2 selamatkan.
Every day at 4:30 am I get woken up by this feathery piece of shit, belting it out right above my bedroom window. I am so sleep deprived 😭 what's wrong with y'all, do you enjoy getting woken up every night or what??!!!!!
I'd like to use a few seconds of this in an amateur music video I'm creating for an original song about Paul McCartney. I will include a reference to this page in the closing credits. May I have your permission?
I like em, BUT, there is one outside my house I hate, his noise it twice as loud as all the other birds, it echo's through my room. even with ear plugs I still here it. I hate this bird and my solution was to start shooting it with a high powered lazer pen. I wonder if some animal lovers would like to give me some negative comments. This bird still hangs around though, pesitant little bugger
My first masterclass teacher was Mister McCartney himself, because at that adolescent time I had the Double White, and of course I learnt to play the song on the guitar. Now many years later ("...will you still send me a Va-len-tine ?" !) I never miss a chance to stop and listen to them, wherever I am.
Great video my friend. It is here in the Netherlands also each morning that the Blackbirds wake me up with their singing. But i do not mind because I like the sound. On my channel you can find also a video of this birds. I wish you a happy day and weekend.
Hi Maurice or Anyone . Ive been feeding a male Blackbird since he was born this year . He really growing up . Hes all black but his beak is still black and he hasn't got the rings around his eyes yet either . My Question is how long does it take for the young males to fully develop into the Male we see in this video for example . My Door is always open and the blackbird walks in when he wants his favourite treat of a Red Grape and he wags his tail and says thank you in blackbird talk exactly like the calls in this video
Hi Andy, your Blackbird is what they call a 1st Winter male bird and will not get its orange/yellow bill and eye ring until later in the spring. In its breading prime the bill can look bright yellow and the brighter the bill the better chance it has of getting a mate.
Maurice Baker Thanks Maurice . I feed his Father as well and he's the most handsome male Blackbird I have seen and his bill is perfect colour so this little fella should has the genes on his side . When exactly do these Guys start singing again ? .I really miss their song
Andy O Brien Hi Andy. unfortunately your blackbird wont be singing again until early spring so you may have to make do with the singing of the Robin until then as its one of the few birds that sing right through the winter.
Maurice Baker.Blackbird Behavior Question Maurice . What Ive noticed with my Blackbirds last 2-3 months is that when singing season is over they tend to hibernate and stay under cover a lot .They will sit in bushes or hide under what cars are there during the day and just as it gets dark then they become more lively .You would never see a Blackbird when you are out walking now . but when spring comes they are all lined up on every street every evening singing their heads off . Weird is it
Andy O Brien Hi Andy, blackbirds are not territorial at this time of year they are concentrating on putting on fat for the winter and not wasting energy on singing and sending off other blackbirds. Most of them will be out gorging themselves on the plentiful supply of berries and worms in the countryside, but as soon as the ground is hard from the first frost they will be back in numbers. In very cold spells I have had up to ten blackbirds in the garden at one time.
Incredible how they can sometimes live up to 200 years old & some can even change there species ie it’s not uncommon to see a black bird 🦅 in its 50th year change into a swan 🦢/ it’s a incredible bird
Beautiful bird song! Love blackbirds, but out here in Australia they are an introduced pest! They are much less of a problem than starlings, Indian Mynah birds, sparrows and a host of other birds, plants and animals that often threaten the survival of native species. Still, I do love the sound(s) of the blackbird, especially in the evening!!! Blackbird singing in the dead of night...
I live in upstate NY and have some kind of black birds that are nesting above my apartment.... I don't know if they are blackbirds or not... They make sounds similar to these
Maurice bravo love your ornithological little cameos. My favourite is the common blackbird as it is so easily discernible. Turdus merula merula its linnean definition. I love this bird as it reminds me of long nights spent hoeing the flower beds and a rather cheeky brave male blackbird used to come and see if I had in covered an earth worm a late supper treat for him. I also think of my late mother watching on supervising the work in her beloved garden, smiling and looking at me as the blackbird came foraging. Happy memories of her and my old home alas now gone like dear mum. Golden memories to treasure. Thanks Maurice and keep on producing these delightful videos.
Thank you Saskia he hasnt been too close lately havent heard him this morning, usually at 4 am He is gorgeous had a close look at him Last week in a tree nearbyDo you know if they have only one mate for life?I thought he was looking for a mate not heard any others around this is not their area, its further down in another state that there are heapsThank you again Saskia makes me feel a little better
This is such a beautiful video.I absolutely adore it.I never realised til now it was the blackbird who made that particular call.I hear it most on a morning and evening
