SECRET LIFE OF THE ROBIN -- Erithacus rubecula

A close look at the changing lifestyle of the robin, from late summer to early spring, as it changes from a solitary hostile bird defending its isolated territory to a sharing companion as it pairs up ready for the breeding season. The film shows a two minute clip of the moment that the female robin enters the male's territory and his initial reluctance to accept her presence. I was lucky enough to watch this at close quarters as they completely ignored me and the camera.

Very nice photography, love the flute like song of the Robin. We are run ragged feeding Robins each spring. A large bag of live mealworms, put a few out regularly over several weeks. Most often taken by the male to feed his partner and offspring. All worthwhile when we see the fruits of his & hers labour; their speckled offspring :-)

Brillant Video Maurice . I started feeding Birds for the first time since May and Ive got 2 Robins in my Yard . Im pretty sure its a male and Female . Male has his side of the yard and the Female has hers and if either crosses into the others side .All Hell breaks lose .They both sing but the Male sings a lot more on his side . Nearly every night before it gets dark Ive seen them walk along each others boundary and do exactly whats in this video . It really is amazing to watch .If I whistle the male will fly over to me to get his favourite treat boiled egg yolk . All my birds love egg yolk . Tits ,Blackbirds ,Robins, Dunnocks . Im new to this feeding birds thing and I want to know everything there is to know about my little friends .

Thank you Andy for your comments. Its good to see that you are getting such pleasure from feeding and watching your birds. Keep it up and you will soon have them eating out of your hand. You can see a bit more about feeding robins in a piece on my website www.mbaker.co.uk called “The Secret Life of the Robin”. Enjoy your birds :-)

Thank you so much for your comments. I have added a link to an article on my website that explains how I managed to get these wild birds to trust me and finally feed from my hand. I don’t consider these birds as tame but just trusting. I hope you are successful if you try this out with your birds. A fabulous video - thankyou :) We have a 1 legged little Robin in our garden that we feed daily. They hve now lost his baby feathers and there is a beautiful bright red breast and smooth feathering. Now after watching your video I will know what to look out for come Christmas time :) I hope and pray he/she finds a mate. We have bought a couple of Robin nest boxes in hope they stay local as they have been. Thankyou again for this informative insight Maurice :D

Superb! No other word for it. You will see from my own uploads that I have an interest in Robins and their behaviour. I don't have access to such a number of pairs and territories, but I have managed to monitor the Robins in my own garden and near to where I work. I especially liked the pair bonding clip. My original garden Robin and his mate had to endure the attentions of several interlopers but they remained together. Despite what I have read that suggests that after the initial pairing they remain almost aloof until mating time, my two were inseparable from January onwards. Wonderful upload, absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for this addition to my Robin knowledge.

Thanks Paul for your very kind comments, you are obviously a bird observer not just a bird watcher. As robins are solitary birds for much of the year they seem to develop individual behaviour characteristics, more so than birds that tend to flock together. It is the norm that a pair of robins will share a territory for most of the winter without too much contact, but as with your pair I have noticed two pairs that tend to like each others company, I have also noticed pairs that stay together well outside the normal period of January to July. Keep up the good work and enjoy your robinis.

I love garden birds, here in Athens, Greece I feed them every winter and most of my visitors are house sparrows, black birds, magpies, gold finches, collard doves and sometimes a red robin. He/she is the sweetest little thing. Very timid not like the robins in the UK where they were fearless. Come May the swallows and swifts will be returning.....very exciting.

I have just been admiring this video when i realised your from Shropshire it is a small world as i am just up the road in N.Wales. I am trying to entice Robins into my garden, i have planted Dogwood and could do with more ideas on what kind of forage/plants would be ideal for them.I have a nesting box ready any advice would be great.
@MauriceBaker100
@MauriceBaker100 8 лет назад
+Gez Dodd Thanks Des, Yes in terms of the internet it is a small world. Glad to hear that you are trying to attract robins to your garden. As robins are mainly insect eaters there are not really any specific plants that I could recommend only to say that that they like plenty of cover in the form of shrubs and hedge plants with plenty of undergrowth. Don’t be to tidy, water for bathing and drinking (however small), a pile of rotting logs or small branches, insect friendly plants and flowers, all these things will encourage insects and make for an environment that will really suit the robin. And finally the magic ingredient as far as robins are concerned is mealworms, preferably live ones if you can get them.

+Maurice Baker Thanks Maurice, yes i am nearly ready and have learned a lot the only remaining question i have is regards to food. I read on the Robins birdhouse instructions not to have food too close to the box. Should i encourage feeding but in other areas of the Garden or is it a case of ignoring these instructions? also the same regarding the birdbath Thanks
@MauriceBaker100
@MauriceBaker100 8 лет назад
+Gez Dodd Yes Gez the instructions are correct, if you place the food or water too near the nest box it would attract too many other birds to that area and the robins would not use the box, so put the box in a quiet spot some distance away.

Thank you SO much for this video. Very informative and beautiful. I've read that it is very difficult to tell the difference between a male and a female robin. In your video, I've noticed that one robin is bigger than the other one, and the "skinny" one always feeds the bigger robin. Do you think that the bigger one is female? I would be very curious to hear your thoughts on that. Take care and thanks again for sharing this amazing video!

We have a bonded pair returning to the garden regularly. The female has found a spot in our garden to make a nest she keeps collecting things. I am going to put out some of our rabbits molted fur for them when it is dry

I feel like there is more to study and understand when the pairing occurs and the female approaching the male repeatedly. I wouldn't be surprised if she does things which are seductive to the male or, on the contrary, if she's evaluating the male based on its display and making her decision. I wished I knew exactly what's happening :)

can you tell me what's likely story? I've been feeding the same Robin from my hand every day since December and yesterday and today I can't even find her. she's always come to her name and a special whistle I make. I'm so upset. surely it's a bit early for molting being the beginning of June. I've been Googling for two days and can't find answers. even when she's not hungry she's always come out when I called just to say hello.
@MauriceBaker100
@MauriceBaker100 7 лет назад
Hello Penny, by the first week of June the first batch of young one may well have become independent of the parents. Most robins, but not all, will go on to have a second brood before splitting up and the female then moves on to find a new territory of her own. It is possible that she may have moved on, but I have heard of quite a few incidents of robins going missing for days, sometimes weeks and then returning with no real explanation as to why this happens.

Maurice Baker I saw a young speckled Robin come out of the tree. I'm not certain she was female but although the bird can be friendly she was very close with me to the point that she would come and find me wherever I was she would land above me and sing to let me know she was there. she even watched me install her very own bird bath sat on the branch right next to me watching. I would sing back to her and she would tilt her head listening to me. so I'm quite devastated as to where she is. I hope she does come back as I thought they tend to quieten down in July.

Hi, I have a robin popping in and out of my shed , it's october the first so will it be looking to shelter for winter? It'd def interested in the shed
@MauriceBaker100
@MauriceBaker100 5 лет назад
Hi Luanna, if it was looking in your shed in the spring it could well have been looking for a nest sight, but at this time of the year it is most likely to be looking for spiders as there are a lot about in the autumn and they tend to be looking for somewhere warmer like your shed.

Other film makers could learn from your informative video, you don't stand in front of the camera you focus on the Robin, its most distinctive flute like song, its habits, territory, then pairing. My garden holly tree close by has frequent Robin that visits.
