1975....the peak of Zeppelin's creativity. The famous Earl's Court shows (5 nights, a milestone in their career)....and the release of the great Physical Graffiti album. They had all of their first six albums on the album charts at the same time in 1975. No bigger band in the world at this time. I would suggest the acoustic set from Earl's Court for a very different sound from them.

Hi Alex! Helene here: It looks and feels “gritty” to me. This was a five-night run, and a long concert. You can see the sweat, the exhaustion, but they are still on top of it. Also, you can see some of that great communication between Plant and Page here, and appreciate that great rhythm section. YES: When I first got into RU-vid in the fall of 2019 at my advanced age (72 then), I first started out by watching Zeppelin and Floyd (my two favorite classic bands). Then I started exploring and branching out. I found that I could enjoy watching heavy metal, grunge, Tool....so many bands that I could not enjoy in my forties...and I realized after some months that it was because watching them live helped me to appreciate the high energy of this music. That kind of energy is more difficult to absorb when you are older...it makes you nervous instead of energizing you. But by watching it, it allows the energy to “wash over me” instead of getting stuck inside me.....if that makes any sense whatsoever. It is hard to explain. But you came close: to see the musicians experiencing the emotion, instead of ME having to contain it, it made it possible for me to really enjoy bands like Metallica, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Tool....even Rage Against the Machine....and fall in love with Nightwish. So RU-vid has been a great boon to me, as a lover of music, for the duration of the pandemic, as I have to stay pretty isolated due to age. THANK YOU, Alex, for doing these live reviews: yesterday’s one of Kashmir, Since I’ve Been Loving You from ‘73 MSG, and todays from Earl Court are three of my very top live Zeppelin videos. I sincerely hope that you will do a couple more.....but if not....thank you for what you’ve done.

I know you're a musician and most of your assessment is from that perspective but I never know if anything blows you away. When you did live Dazed And Confused I thought you would be like wow wow wow... I am such a Zeppelin fan and I get excited by all their stuff. Just an observation.

The Danelectro guitar Jimmy is playing has been with him since some of his earliest days. He purchased it for 45 GBP back in the day, which was extremely reasonable. He said people would look at it with a bit of wonder and it wasn't until years later that he found out that they were also sold in the Sears Roebuck catalogue (I remember that catalogue but I'm ancient). He said some couldn't believe he'd play such an instrument but when you're getting music like *that* out of it, why not use it? Another bit of the ever-present LZ improvisation is Robert throwing in a bit of Jimi Hendrix's song Hey Joe with the lyrics "so I gave her the gun and I shot her".

As Julie below said your a bit of an acquired taste because your so low key. Its' sort of fun though because I can never tell if you liked something or not. LOL. But I generally respect anyone doing these reactions as long as they are respectful to the music. And I especially respect those that react to the songs that can actually play an instrument. For the first 15 years I listened to Zeppelin I didn't care for this song much and usually skipped by it. Then when I started making myself listen to entire albums at work instead of just playing my favorite songs, surprisingly this became my favorite Zeppelin song for many years. the point being, there are three types of bands and or songs in my opinion. The ones where you like the song straight away but after hearing it a few times it loses it luster. The type where you like the song from the start and always like it. And the type where you don't like the song at first but after a few or many listens it grows on you. to me, most if not all of Zeppelins songs fit in to the last two categories. Oh, Trampled Underfoot from the same concert is killer!

Interesting...this was done on one of the other five nights of the Earl’s Court run, because it differs in some ways from the one that is usually shown...as they always mixed it up in each performance. Equally good...just different. I think I like the other one a bit better........

Yeah You are right, this song is more for the hard core Zep guys. It is long, yet you put it WELL. Bluesy tracks are more about the FEEL. Watching Jimmy play here is remarkable. Plant's Plea to let him in, are Spectacular! Pounding Drums are Great. and the John Paul Jones bass line carrying the song. Great Review.

At 7:39 Plant sings, “so, I gave her the gun and shot her.” That’s a line from Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix, in case you’re unaware, or missed that. You articulated your points well with respect to how seeing the band perform this song enhances the experience, for you. I still prefer the studio version (which was recorded live with no overdubs) by a long shot, as each member performs their respective parts with greater clarity and intensity. Bonham’s drums are pulverizing in the studio version, whereas they are subdued in this performance, thereby weakening the overall power that the former possesses. This is still a great live rendition, and Page somehow managed to pull it off with all of his various and intricate guitar parts. His guitar solo in Over The Hills And Far Away, at Earl’s Court, on the other hand, is embarrassingly bad, and is indicative of the decline that he started to face around this time.

Brilliant brilliant brilliant..... and you were OK too! 🤣 Challenge for Alex.... your not so keen on Floyd as Zepp BUT would seeing them play give things a similar lift??? One oldy, from the 1971 album Meddle - Echoes - Part 1 live at Pompeii ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LxksRFZacJI.html This has how to do epic with no audience! Or later from 1979 album The Wall - Run Like Hell - Pulse Concert. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0dB6MQlFLu8.html This is how to end a show! Would really love to see your reaction to two vastly different experiences. Echoes is the line up after Syd and was where Floyd really found their "thing". Run Like Hell - written by Roger, is performed after Roger had left.

This is not my favourite Zeppelin song, but I love the sound of the slide guitar by Jimmy Page, especially the introduction, and I love the way Robert sings it with passion.

Isn't pretty awesome. LZ really has an unmatched stage presence...and that really connects with the audience. They designed their music for live impromptu performances. You're reactions are very relatable, as I too find that their live performances at many times outweigh certain studio recordings. Another note, you'll find Earls court performances are very raw, but energy and emotion, nothing polished like their movie concert.
