I can't wait to see Songbird come back next year! I know the Breeders' Cup tag line is The Best Is Yet To Come, but after the Distaff, I'm not so sure we didn't see the best at the Breeders' Cup already. One hell of a horse race and Songbird, Mike, Beholder and Gary made that happen! Congrats to all! Thanks for posting this footage.
I always love races whether the horse you like and/or bet, wins loses or dead heats with another horse in a thrilling race where the two horses battle for the last 1/8th of a mile with only the length of a nose separating the two. You couldn't get any better then that race, the great 3 year old filly losing by less than a nostril to the great six year old mare, who some thought after losing her last few that her best days of racing where over but I was happy I believed that she could dig down and give us one last great effort. That she did, in this year's B.C. Distaff and hats off to Songbird who might of finally lost but the Songbird team has a lot to look forward to in 2017.
There was no loser here. They both won. I wish they could have both gotten the trophy after both equally running their guts out in this race. A race for the ages.
I would just say to those at Fox Hill Farm, your filly Songbird is definitely the real deal! There's absolutely no disgrace at all in being beaten by a nose in a race this tough by a true champion mare like Beholder, no disgrace.

I've watched this hundreds of times and Songbird won by a nose. I'm not sure what kinds of regulations there are in assuring a correct decision, but this one got messed up. Songbird still undefeated.

I feel like the heart was ripped out of me, at least for now. I know that Songbird is the better horse. She's a three-year-old, still immature filly who is about two years away from reaching her peak physically, mentally, emotionally, experientially. Beholder double her age and is absolutely fully mature in every way and his been for a bare minimum of about a year and a half. The major advantage in all regards was with Beholder. But still, Songbird had the final head bob which she couldn't complete because the finish line came first. If she could have finished her final head bob she may have won. I've never felt this gutted as a result of Thoroughbred racing outside of a three-year old boy heading into the Belmont Stakes with the Triple Crown on the line and failing in the pre-Pharoah era. Otherwise, it's this. And I'm not an old-timer but I'm no newcomer either, being 32 and having followed the sport closely ever since the mid 1990s-twenty years. I've witnessed a lot of heartbreak and disappointment. The undefeated streak is over, when it came sooooooo close to being twelve for twelve. And staring next year at age four, more mature in every facet then very possibly, perhaps probably, returning for her five-year old campaign when Thoroughbreds typically are fully mature, Songbird a very legitimate chance of breaking records for undefeated streaks, heck, maybe even never losing. The latter is a bit unlikely, but Songbird is the type of racehorse who is extraordinarily rare. If her handlers entered her in the Triple Crown series-and she didn't miss a bit of time that kept her out of the Kentucky Oaks- she had a true chance of being the first female to win the Crown, especially in a year when the three-year olds in the Triple Crown series were so below par compared to past seasons. Clearly I have an emotional attachment to this filly and I may be saying some things that many, or at least a sizable number of readers will look at and say, "Yeah, right." But she's such a special filly, and I love her and am truly letdown in an enormous way. I haven't felt this kind of letdown in Thoroughbred racing since the Big Brown disaster at Belmont during the third leg of the Triple Crown.
cgarnet01 there no reason to be feel letdown by this great filly except for the bet you might of lost, but as a fan of Songbird there is no reason to feel letdown, this filly did not back down when challenged pretty much for the first time and it was by a great mare that became only the 2nd horse to win 3 B.C. races. Songbird might of lost, but there's no reason to feel letdown, this great filly will go into next year as the best dirt horse on the female side and I think your going to see some amazing races from her next year and hopefully the year after that.
Nothing about this Distaff made me feel gutted except for Corona del Inca being euthanized after fracturing her leg on the turn. Puts losing by a nose in perspective, doesn't it? Songbird ran a great race, proved that she is the real deal, and got back to the barn safe. Surely you can feel good about that (someday.) The people who own, train and ride her were absolutely thrilled with how she did. Undefeated streaks/records are overrated. I think Zenyatta's most impressive race was the one she lost, and I'd say that's also true of Songbird so far. She dueled Beholder for a quarter of a mile and did not fold, it was an amazing race, a queen vs a princess and the queen said "Not so fast, little girl." I look forward to seeing what Songbird does next year.
Songbird ISNT the better horse..the BEST horse won..Songbird could NEVER EVER do what Beholder did to the boys in the pacific classic..when Beholder was at her BEST she would have just DESTROYED songbird..Beholder is past her peak and shes still running awesome..Songbird proved today that she has NO shot at beating legit horses..Beholder at her peak would have beaten Songbird by 10 lengths instead of the nose today..Songbird had everything her OWN way in this race..from the rail..CLEAR lead..STILL couldnt hold off Beholder
Songbird proved that Beholder is a MUCH better horse..Beholder is past her prime and still beat Songbird..if Beholder was at her peak she would have passed Songbird with ease to like a 5 length victory...Songbirds times of her races are always soooo slow too..at least today we all can finally STOP lobbying for Songbird to face the top males..She would get absolutely DESTROYED..Songbird is a good little filly..but she isnt GREAT..she is no rachel alexandra or zenytta..not even CLOSE..had everything her own way..LONE speed..the rail..still lost..Songbird will go back to continue to beat up on lesser fillies..as she should..She wont be able to compete with the "real" competition
I'm a big Beholder fan and at 1st I wuz happy that she won as I thought she did,but looking at the replay in slow motion u can clearly c songbird's nose in front as they hit the finish line.....
The TV cameras are NOT directly aligned with the wire! They can be deceptive in a close finish. As I ( and james farrell a few posts above) are pointing out, the only angle that matters has to be directly facing the finish line. Look at the official photo at 9:00 here. which is *straight* with the wire. Beholder won, by the narrowest of margins. Doesn't even matter (which is quite possible) if her nose had bobbed ahead a fraction of a second before or a fraction of a second later. Nor does what we "saw" on the television matter, since the network's non-straight camera angle can create an illusion of who is ahead. Beholder's nose reached the wire first.
What a race. Shame either had to lose, but perhaps this was the best outcome; Beholder can retire on a great victory, and Songbird, with her dignity still intact but no longer needing to preserve her unbeaten record, can perhaps take more risks and try facing tougher competition in the future. A lot of unbeaten horses tend to race cautiously in order to keep their records intact. Had Songbird never lost against females she would have probably never stepped up to males. It would have been too big a risk. Maybe now she will.
*To all those typing rubbish about Songbird being robbed, just be thankful that she: (1) Didn't have to face a female of the caliber of Inside Information, Azeri, Zenyatta, or Unrivaled Belle, etc.; (2) Didn't have to face Beholder when she won the Pacific Classic; (3) Caught Stellar Wind on an off-day.*

Great horses--great race! Beyer and Davidowitz had it right--so many things to say....the race was totally different because stellar wind was not a factor. Don't kid yourselves...beholder was by far the better horse here. Took both turns 3 wide...pace was much slower than expected because no stellar wind up front. That's really the main reason Songbird held up this well. The rest is history as they say.
Looked like songbird was going to pull away from Beholder..than it looked like Beholder was gonna go right by Songbird when Songbird didnt pull away..and Songbird held on strong..great race..but ANOTHER veryyy SLOW race for Songbird..She is a good filly..but she isnt even CLOSE to what rachel alexandra was..what a way to go out for Beholder..proving she STILL has it..all this talk about Songbird facing the boys..imagine she ran in the classic??..she would have gotten DESTROYED
The official photo finish photo must have been taken after the finish line. Just look at Gary Stevens whip. In the finish photo it is in a 95 degree angle but in the video at 6:09 when they appear to cross the finish line the whip is at a 85 degree angle.

They owed Mandela something or someone something because even Gary Stevens raised his whip in a matter of almost defeat at the final bob and almost all of the announcers called for beholder almost instantly without a photo which clearly warranted one. If you watch a race for classic empire 9/5/16 at Saratoga you'll see the margin of defeat is much greater and it was called a dead heat. I love this game with my life but sometimes you just really scratch your head.

Brian Shaw Agreed, not even a bush league track would have that kind of call. Wrona's call was better by an incalculable margin. Don't know who decided to appoint Collmus as America's announcer, his calls always sound so forced and that stumble there in the midst of the duel showed it.
I laughed at that moment of cringe. Also "Gary Stevens has not asked her to go, as of yet. Now he's starting to ask, just a bit" sounded clunky as hell. But then again, lots of people love Trevor Denman while I find him profoundly irritating, so Collmus having lots of fans doesn't surprise me. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I'm a big sports fan and baseball was the sport I was the most knowledgeable of for years. I don't follow it anymore and haven't for about five years. With each head bob the other horse's nose went in front. If the wire were another couple of feet it would have been Songbird as her nose bobbed back in front after they hit the wire. His 2nd crop hasn't done a thing and his first crop hasn't carried on from their 2yo and early 3yo seasons, just like he couldn't do. Nothing something I'd ever breed to.

Uncle Mo didn't produce a big-name horse in his 2nd crop, but he was 18th on the 2016 list of North American sires of two-year-olds. He had 16 winners, 1 stakes winner, 6 black type horses. His two-year-olds last year won $1,217,802. That compares favorably to Medaglia d'Oro, 19th on that list, with 13 winners, 1 stakes winner, 2 black type horses, with earnings of $1,188,878. Or Bernardini: 10th among sires of 2016 two-year-olds, with 20 winners, 2 black type stakes winners and 7 black type horses, with 2-year-old earnings of $1,474,780. Or Curlin, a young stallion with a rising reputation: 22nd on the list, with 7 winners, 3 black type stakes winners and 5 black type horses (from a much smaller crop, though), with earnings of $1,032.822. Eighteenth out of hundreds of North American studs is more than respectable, especially considering Uncle Mo achieved that (like Tapit in his first years) without getting the very best mares. Runners by UM out of the highest class mares won't hit the track until 2019, drawn in by his success his first year in the breeding shed.
Beholder is the better horse by a mile, but Songbird is still one of the best fillies in the past century. So refreshing to see a race with two champion horses going at it.
Highway Robbery for the Undefeated Songbird, the connections and the horse players because if you slow it down to 0.25 you will clearly see that Songbird won the race and beholder bobbed her after the wire...this is disgusting how much cheating and fuckery goes on in this sport! This is not the Sport of Kings it is the Sport of Crooks!
Songbird is greatly overrated.Just be thankful that Songbird will not have to face an in-form Paseana, Inside Information, Azeri or Zenyatta, or even an in-form Blind Luck, for that matter.Indeed, both Beholder and Stellar Wind are capable of faster times and 110+ speed figures. You're lucky that this race rates at only a 105. And those who think Songbird would have any chance against Arrogate, well... too ridiculous for further comment.
SKMRify overrated!! songbird beat all the other fillies of her 3 year old class and could have won the filly triple crown.you failed to mention songbird is half of beholders age.i bet any 3 year filly in the country would take songbirds record and money.

Anyway, we'll see what happens in 2017, but she'll have a resurgent Stellar Wind to contend with (hopefully), and she'd better do everything to stay well away from Arrogate. He would beat her by 10 or 11 lengths.
