Songbird Is a Mom now _ filly by Arrogate. One tough filly, glad Mr. Portor grabbed her away from trainer. Queen B is a Mom too with her Uncle Mo Colt. I saw Beholder close up after being saddled but no GS yet. She Had the "it " factor in Spades. I was spellbound, couldn't even take a photo. My husband took 2 photos of beholder cropped badly, but he didn't know what he was looking at. All he knew was "that horse was drawing a crowd." Life with an narcsisst .... (Unknown at that time) Even a thick Narcsisst could not erase the brilliance of Beholder's shimmer as she should in the sun .... The queen had come for her crown to take back to the breeding shed .. to show her foals from where they came. In one image you could clearly see Beholders Big Shiny Back Engine. A true Diva when it came race time ... Queen B looked over the crowd with cell phone cameras, stools & videos rolling while held high as if the Queen expected as much ... Both are Legend Equine Stars The Princess & The Queen A Great Day RK
Go back and watch how chilly Mike sits on Songbird compared to the other Jockeys movements. Your right he is amazing on a racehorse. He is motionless above leg movement.
"__ would've crushed Songbird." "Songbird is overrated, __ would beat her easily." Songbird isn't the greatest horse ever but she's an all time great for what she's accomplished in her division alone. Can only beat what you're up against. There are lots of great horses that would beat other great horses. Losing doesn't mean a horse isn't great. Certain horses always have critics. They said Songbird was bullying west coast fillies and couldn't beat Carina Mia and Cathyrn Sophia. She beats them then everyone says "well they're nothing special". Can guarantee had she lost the same people would be saying "finally she loses when she has real competition" lol. You don't have to like the horse but I don't see how you can knock a horse for winning.
AnnaNicolesDeathbed I still wonder about that photo in the Distaff lol. I've seen several angles and I'm still not completely convinced that Beholder won in some of them and others it looks obvious that Beholder won. That was the most exciting race I've seen in a while bar American pharaoh's efforts.
You people are ridiculous! Paid Up Subscriber won by open lengths, but her time was incredibly slow, even though eased down. "Songbird is just that good", you say? Go and watch the replay of Inside Information winning the Breeders Cup Distaff, or Sharp Cat winning the Beldame Stakes, etc. Those fillies would crush Songbird: They ran faster times, and put up far superior speed figures. Songbird faces a slightly over-the-hill Beholder, and then has trouble with Martini Glass, and you people continue to spin all these excuses.
SKMRify Seems to be a lot of hostility in the air these days. I don't think anyone is making excuses. Or at least not me. Rating Songbird highly doesn't mean she's the best horse ever. I just don't think it's necessary to diminish a horse's accomplishments because of what races other horses won or what times they put up. At the end of the day you can only beat who you're up against. We should enjoy watching all of these wonderful horses and give them their due credit regardless of where we rank them.
(1) She's very accomplished, but still somewhat overrated simply because the fillies/mares I mentioned were faster, and often faced stiffer competition, even female competition. (2) If she runs like she did in this race she loses to Forever Unbridled, Vale Dori, Stellar Wind, or even Abel Tasman. It's that simple.
Rick Legend: But it is necessary to point out that her grand achievements are largely against heavily overmatched competition. She's great, but she will never be Dance Smartly, Sightseek, Zenyatta, etc.
People actually were hoping this horse ran in the kentucky derby??..Songbird might have finished DEAD LAST if she did..This horse is a good filly..but if she tries to take on the boys in a "real" field she will get completely CRUSHED!..13 races and not 1 of them did she show a very fast final time..Stick with the girls
Pontificating on what one speculates might have happened if a horse had run certain races, and trying to compare horses from different eras and provoking arguments about same, is FIRST-CLASS UNADULTERATED STUPIDITY!!! Your whole negative approach and attitude, along with your illiterate, unpunctuated sentences running down Songbird, sticks in my craw. I am glad I can enjoy watching a gifted creation of God like Songbird race. That's the bottom line meaning to the sport.
This horse has ran 13 times...average at best final times..Always runs against average at best horses..Let me know when this horse actually runs against someone..Songbird got beat by Beholder as Beholder was WAY past her prime and retiring..Her comeback was a win but it wasnt special..Songbird has a LOT to prove to me
Terrific Troll:Agreed. Nothing against Songbird, but can you imagine the beating that an in-form Lady's Secret, Bayakoa, Dance Smartly, Paseana, Inside Information, Azeri, Zenyatta or even Blind Luck would inflict on her? And even at a shorter sprint distance an in-form Xtra Heat, Indian Blessing or Groupie Doll would smoke her, as well.
If Beholder was well past her prime what does that say about Stellar Wind ? Songbird runs fast enough to win, these are not time trials, they are races.
George G: They are not time trials, and Songbird is great, yes, but still quite overrated, nonetheless. All the great distaffers I mention above ran fast, impressive times on a number of occasions against better competition. Consider even a specialist sprinter like Xtra Heat, who faced a higher level of opposition repeatedly; whereas Songbird has been lucky to square off against solid, but overmatched opponents. *Surely Songbird would not now have eight G1 victories under her belt if she had to regularly run against a formidable opponent like Blind Luck or Havre de Grace, who fought it out six times within 12 months.*
We have no way of knowing how well horse from different era's would run against each other, kinda like who would win Ali or Lewis (Louis ?).. All I know is I think she is the best filly/mare running right now and that I can watch and enjoy her.
