Clay (w) 26:28 [10] Eddie Cox (m & w) & Blanche Merrill (m & w) [10] was one of two songs Marion Harris waxed at her very first recording date, on August 9th, 1916. The other song, "I Ain't Got Nobody", still with the tag "Much", became one of her trademark songs. This one remained a hidden gem. Joe Venuti & Eddie Lang attended to it a decade later in one of their many priced recordings.

Great information on Marion! To my knowledge, I don't think their was another female singing artist of this era that had her versatility and staying power.

One of the qualties of the music of this era was that one could not only understand the lyrics-yes,they were lyrics!-but they could raise a smile even if certain texts would now be considered non PC or even "racist"-than which there is no greater crime!Thank you for the selection.A real pleasure.

My grandfathers era! I'm from the late 50's and early 60's era my dad was the late 30's and early 40's era. I was from the first era that teens had their own music. American Graffiti. I listened to Bill Haley and the Comets, Fats Domino, Elvis, Richie Valens, The Big Bopper, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Eddie Cohcran, Dion and the Belmonts, The Del Vikings, The Platters, The Skyliners, etc. But the best two from the 50's of all time were Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. The best from my dads era was definitely Glenn Miller during the big band era. and I'm really just starting to do research on my grandfathers era my grandfather was in World War 1, my dad was in World War 2. I was lucky not to be in any War, I always thought World War 3 would be in the late 50's and early 60's, but things were innocent and we cruised and had fun, are parents hated are music and cars. I went into the Air Force right before Vietnam. But listening to music from the late 1910's early 1920's makes me feel young. and makes the 50's sound even more wild.

Bob, it’s hard to know how to describe this set - Hokey? Jokey? - but I return to it often when I want a bit of musical fun from a time without so many eardrum-destroying overblown electric guitars but a full complement of heart and sincerity that is welcome in the 21st century. Pure Americana throughout but I tip my fedora to - Nora Bayes and My Barney Lies Over the Ocean - recorded 11/16/1918.

I have two fedora's James and like to wear them. I think the music reflects the more genteel nature of society during this time.

I recognize some of these songs and the style of music from watching Bugs Bunny as a kid! Pretty interesting. In the 60's when they were making Bugs Bunny, this style of music was to them what early Rock music is to us, such as The Beatles.

There is freedom in music and 1910 and 1920 plus throw in the thirties. These decades gave us talented, groundbreaking songwriters and artists. They were inspired by their life experiences; be they good times or bad.
@SuperJackman117
@SuperJackman117 9 лет назад
Nancy Takes It lol no there isnt there is domestic violence and gamers saying "make me a sandwich" but thats it compared to the shit they did back then. in fact if you want an example of sexism in that era just go to syria or some terrorist controlled country and youll see.

why these singers sing like German or Dutch?
@CM-xs2eb
@CM-xs2eb 9 лет назад
coqui jorge davila I've often wondered that before too. I'm not sure what the real answer is, but I guess maybe many of them were immigrants to the US or else trained outside of the US. Of course it was more common back then to sing songs in different accents for comic effect, but there are just as many if not more examples (as heard here) of singers who seem incidentally to have foreign accents (often German) or else pronounce their English in ways that sound odd to our ears nowadays (e.g. rolled Rs, aspirated ch's, etc.). Not sure if that was just within the spectrum of normal variation back then.
@michaelsterckx4120
@michaelsterckx4120 6 лет назад
They had to over-enunciate in order for the trumpet to pick up the words of the song, which is why they rolled their Rs.
