The song was called Black Dog because there was a black dog who kept hanging out at Headly Grange, where they were in residence recording this album. They couldnt think of a title, so they just called it Black Dog. No hidden meaning.

From 1969-1971 4 albums that defined a genre, this is from the untitled 4th album, that album is a rare every single song is a masterpiece but if It were me, I'd ask you to review When The Levee Breaks next and everyone will tell you to do Stairway To Heaven which you should but Levee is a heavy metal blues that will make your bones shake.

No group gives me more chills per song than Led Zeppelin. Some groups have more meaning to me lyrically and nostalgically (Supertramp, ELO and Rush), other bands are more influential and have a greater range musically and melodically (The Beatles and Pink Floyd) but for me Led Zeppelin is the embodiment of relentless, driving blues-based mainstream rock/hard rock.

Black Dog is a term used for depression, I suffer bouts of the Black Dog from time to time, Led Zeppelin helps me get through them.

This song was named black dog because there was a stray black dog that was hanging out at the studio when Zeppelin recorded this album that's why they gave this song the title black dog because they didn't have a title for it so they decided black dog because of the new friend they made at the studio

Not in this case. It was named after a black labrador that wandered the grounds of Headley Grange. Check out Professor of Rock youtube channel.

The black dog story isn't apocryphal- they were recording the fourth album at Hedley Grange, a large country house . The stray black dog came in and they made friends with it only then to be told that it was very savage and nobody could get near it. They were working on this track but hadn't got the title or lyrics, so used black dog as a working title. They then decided to keep it when they completed the track. Altogether positive! the search you did is correct for Winston Churchill - he did call his depression his black dog - its just not the same black dog story. You will probably hear a lot about Hedley grange as the recording of the fourth album is regarded as groundbreaking. A good source for information on this is a film called "it might get loud" which features 3 guitarists Jimmy Page from Led Zep the Edge form u2 and Jack White from the white stripes. It gives the back story of each of them and then they meet up and talk and jam. Jimmy Page revisits Hedley Grange and describes all the stuff that happened there. This is a fantastic way to get to know about the band and JP in particular. The joy the man still has in playing guitar and talking about what they created is life enhancing ( i think he was in his late sixties or seventies when this was made) Also the interaction between the 3 guitarists is great - jp demonstates the riffs from whole lotta love and you can see the other two turn into 15 year old schoolboy fans!! its a 90 minute film and is on youtube also broken down into sections, its not like you've got anything else to watch!!!!

The story I heard, maybe apocryphal, was that a black dog walked into the studio when they were recording the song, that's the reason for the title, has nothing to do with the lyrics, which is hilarious, it also explains why other Zep titles are also seemingly unrelated to the actual song.

There was a black Lab that wandered the grounds of Headley Grange while they were recording music. They befriended it. Hence the name Black Dog.

And another great reaction man. Love it. I've never even thought about the meaning of it. It was just kind of a striking title and the music is just so Raw and they do their clever trickery or it almost sounds like it's in an oddball time signature like a progressive band like rush or something but it's not. They were just Masters at breaking up a straight rhythm into highly syncopated sub rhythms that kind of fool you into that Cadence and then all the sudden it's back on the beat. But if you notice kind of John Bonham is what holds that together he never changes his beat he's not playing anything different it's all straight it's just the guitar and the base and the singing and the other stuff. And so if you're dancing to it too just keep going left or right to left or right people get confused but if you just do that you will feel the Deep Groove of the music and now puts it all into hard contrast and it feels so good. It's just one of those hard rock songs but it's quirky, they are playing against a very traditional structure and just fucking it up enough to mess with you. It makes it quirky and interesting and raw.

Good ear - the drums are in 4/4 and the guitars are mostly 5/4 - that's why they start together but drift apart and back every 20 bars...

Funny note about this song, for some time they didn't have a title. But while recording, they used to see a black dog go wandering off seeking some action, and each and every day the dog would come home looking torn up and wagged out, so they ended up calling the song Black Dog, for obvious reasons.
