Songwriter REACTS to The Cranberries - Linger (First Listen!)

Dolores' incredible voice, along with the band's distinctive sound captivated me from the first listen.. They have a lot of great songs to listen to!

Do you ever listen to a song and it takes you back to a very special time in your life? This is one of those songs for me. I was still living in Ireland at the time and had the most amazing bunch of friends. I was studying for my degree and life was great. Best time of my life!

This was their breakout song off of Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? Then Zombie came along a year later off of No Need To Argue. EVERY song on BOTH albums is amazing, which is rather rare.

Linger was their First Hit in the States. I'm a Linger girl - No Zombie for me.

I wasn't in to vocals back in the 80's, 90's ... then heard O'Riordan and refocused.

I liked your comment "I actually think I like this song better [than Zombie]" after the video. That's exactly how I felt each time I heard a song by The Cranberries I hadn't heard before. I was too young to really listen or appreciate them in the 90s and only discovered them during this pandemic while in lockdown. Zombie was the first track I heard, Linger second. I would highly recommend listening to a few more of their tracks (reacting or even just to listen offline) that all sound completely different much like this song compared to Zombie. I'd recommend Dreams next (a chorus-less song that's got tempo to it and showcases Dolores' keening style of singing). Then Ode To My Family which also presents Dolores' vocals perfectly in a slower style song. My personal favourite song When You're Gone would be my final recommendation as it's another track that's completely different to all the others I've mentioned but there's many many others too. RIP Dolores, what a wonderful voice and to think she wrote Linger as a 17 year old when joining the band shows how talented her songwriting was from such a tender age. Such an underrated band but thankfully RU-vid helps new audiences discover them to enhance the band's legacy.

My three favorites are Dreams, Zombie, Twenty One. Dreams is a mini masterpiece.

This was their first hit on their first album. The song that MTV and college radio promoted like crazy. Delores was the talent of the band. Her magical voice, song writing, and music oriented family background. She played the church organ since she was 12 and also played guitar. The boys had only been playing for a few years at this point. RIP Delores ❤️

Top reaction my friend the cranberries are very underrated. Zombie has a much greater meaning as its about the loss of children during the troubles in northern ireland were over 4000 people died and nearly 50,000 maimed. It is dedicated to two little boys blown up by an ira bomb in warrington england. Dolores detested all violence from all sides no matter what affiliation relegion or nationality you held.

My favorite song from cramberries is "ode to my family ".

It's about her guy cheating on her and stringing her along as she stays faithful and fully devoted, he doesn't move on to let her go; he makes their relationship & lies linger.;)

The Cranberries are awesome. Worth listening to not just the well known hits. There are very few tracks that aren't just as good as this. Imagine being 17 years old, cheating on your girlfriend and she write a song about your betrayal that the entire world gets to hear. Apparently he subsequently apologised. RIP Dolores.

Some are confused about this song. This is from Songfacts: "Dolores O'Riordan wrote this song about her feelings following the breakup with her first boyfriend, the soldier who broke her heart. She said the song is about "the way I reacted to infatuation." Delores died by drowning due to alcohol intoxication in January 2018. And, your band sounds GREAT! I've rarely heard a better example of how some bands/"musicians" make it virtually impossible to discern what the singers lyrics are. This is quite awful; if your lyrics suck and you need vocals just hum.

There are basically 3 types of songs in classical pop music. 1. She loves him, but he doesn't love her. Those suck. 2. He loves her, but she doesn't love him. Sucks too. 3. She loves him and he loves her. Those are just total rubbish :D Dolores could really sing well, true, the genre is just not my cup of tea.. Cheers :)

Song written about the death of two children Tim Parry aged 12 and Jonathen Ball aged 3, blown up by and IRA bomb as they walked by a public bin outside McDonnald's on 26th February 1993 in Warrington England. Very Sad, Peace to us all now and forever between Ireland and the UK. And may all who died from both sides now rest in peace believing that this war between our nations is over and is gone forever.
