For me, THIS song is actually the strongest evidence for me that Sega still used micheal jacksons songs without saying they did. Sonic 3's soundtrack just sounds totally different than the other games, being a lot more "RnB" or "Hip Hop" Driven. This song in particular just sounds so much like micheal jackson it hurts, In my mind there isn't anybody else who would create a song this groovy for a launch base level, unless sega just had a VERY particular vision.
@@sirmrman1 True lol. The very first time I heard Sonic 3's music years ago (particularly the Mid Boss Theme. That "HOO!" lol), something felt......unique and different with it's music. I paid it no mind too much still but that certain beat in Carnival Night that sounded waaaaaaaay too similar to Michael Jackson's "Jam" was what really got me suspicious. Then Ice Cap was the final straw and just made me look up was he and his team somehow involved with Sonic 3's OST and sure enough, they were indeed. Imagine my shock.

Honestly, I'm not familiar with all of MJ's material, but this is strong enough to be a release on one of his albums, with the production being higher of course, and actual lyrics. The Sonic 3 soundtrack has always seemed strange. Angel Island, Hydrocity, and Marble Garden are excellent tracks, composition and production-wise. They don't seem dated in the same way that earlier Sonic tracks are, especially those from the first game. That being said, the soundtrack changes dramatically at Carnival Night, with MJ's involvement being apparent with the heavy "new jack swing" undertones in the song. Also note that Acts 1 and 2 are not heavily differentiated under MJ as when the Japanese composers worked, probably because MJ simply could not be bothered to remix his own original material at the time. Anyways, this song is very characteristic of something MJ would release. Simplistic but interestingly unorthodox, with subtle and limited progression (MJ's songs are meant to be danced to, and so once he has established the "hook", he sticks close to it), and heavy use of vocal inserts.
You mean Brad, since like all/most singers it was a team effort and MJ's involvement has never been clear except that he was was involved in the project not how involved, whilst Brads involvement is very clear since songs were used in the game that belonged to Brad not MJ ever.

Music from Sonic 1 ,2 and CD are far better and more memorable in the Sonic franchise than Sonic 3. Till this day people love to remix songs from those games. In actuallity Sonic 3 dosent sound that good, the sound is not crisp and clear like Sonic 1 and 2 are. Its ok but not great and memorable in the Sonic franchise. In fact i considere 3 a great departure from the great music that Sonic 1 and 2 had. Just hear those tunes, their amazing.
I agree, this is one that could easily have been written by his team, or at least based on the work they did. This song also helps me understand why he could have been disappointed by the Genesis sound chip's output (aside from him having been used to professional-grade synthesizers and mixing boards that probably cost in the thousands of dollars).
This song is fantastic. I like the upbeat pop music in front, with the long and drawn out depressing music in the background. Its a song with layers, and I think it works fantastically with this zone.
There is ofically Sonic Spinball between Sonic 2 and 3. Also daytime cycle exists in Sonic 3(& Knuckles) and to this daytime cycle, it becomes night for one time after Marble Garden act 2 boss and becomes day again after Icecap act 1 boss. This shows us that rebuilding it actually took way longer than you think.
(sigh) the memories. Sonic 3 has to be one of my favorite Sonic games EVER! The music is so memorable for me. I too was a victim of the Spinning Barrel of Death in Carnival Night Zone Act 2. So you can only how imagine how happy I was when I finally gained access to both Ice Cap AND Launch Base Zone. For years I had NO IDEA what Launch Base looked like.
ha ha yeah. I just wish more people realised S3 and S&K are two halves of the same game. Maybe then more people would realise it's a better game than S2 :D
Richard Denton If it makes ya feel better. I at least always thought of Sonic 3 & Knuckles as one super game, if not S&K as an unofficial Sonic the Hedgehog 4/Sonic 3: Episode 2 of sorts. If I had access to the sound test when I was a kid, I bet I'd easily figure Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 were meant to be one game too. :)
SonicFan3642 Richard Denton Yeah man....supposedly, it goes Sonic 1,2, 3, Sonic&Knuckles serving as a continuation of Sonic 3, because Sonic & Knuckles find out that Robotnik's still alive after the Death Egg supposedly blew up, but Robotnik ends up surviving and stealing the Master Emerald, thus causing events in the game.
Man that Spinning Barrel of Death... I actually sold my game when I was a kid because I thought it was broken. Then bought it back a couple of days later when somebody finally told me what I what supposed to do.
the prototype version is good, but it doesn't exactly fit a final level of the the game. Granted, it wasn't supposed to be the final zone originally, but I think that's why they decided to use this track instead of the prototype track. Now why they didn't use the prototype tracks for Ice Cap and Carnival Night, idk.
This song had a lot of what I call... 90s swag. Especially the bass in the transition part. There's something to be said about catchy themes like these from back in the day, you know? I might rhyme over it soon Lol.
People say the MIDIs in Origins are bad, but I make the argument that even the original Genesis versions of the prototype songs weren't good. Thank god MJ and his sound team got involved and gave us masterpieces like Ice Cap and Launch Base.

Today they basically in a round about way confirmed that Jun is going to replace these tracks. They weren't direct but they implied that to be the case. They said they can't use all the original music in relation to certain tracks and that he working on replacing them. So probably using the beta music with some tweaks. We already know the mini boss music is covered by the Sonic 3 & Knuckles mini boss music.
This was the perfect "final" level in this game because the second you pop in, you realize what the mission really is: stop the death egg from becoming operational. I can't imagine how it felt as a little kid in the 90s who had already been playing the sonic series for a long time: all this time through this game, you thought your goal was to save your friends from being turned into robots but it wasn't, although that's partly the reason why you're there. After beating the first five stages, you pop out of the snow and are greeted with the ominous death egg, staring at you in the background. This "kid in the 90s" probably had several questions flowing through his head: "is that the death egg?" "What's it doing here?" "Didn't I destroy it?" And as you play the stage you realize that it's about to take off. The stage almost sends you into panic; you have to reach the death egg and stop it from lifting off as fast as possible. I mean, the music even tells you to "Go! Go! Go!" This game does such a great job at storytelling.
Am I the only one that thought that every time I hear the part between 00:47 and 00:50 while playing as Sonic, the vocals would say, "Go, hedgehog! Go, hedgehog!"?

actually ,I think both fit Sonic quite well. the rock music fits his carefree/do-what-I-want personality. overall the music is upbeat, just like he is :) I mean, have you heard City Escape? lol
Never was the biggest fan of this track but now with Origins coming back to this I hear a masterpiece, this is the real song for Launch base zone. MJ did such a great Job with Carnival, Ice cap and Launch and I am happy that he was a part in my childhood in sonic 3.- RIP
At 00:17 "ass wipe....ass wipe" always sounded like this when I played as a kid, and today that still stands. Never knew MJ helped with the music. But hey thats a fun fact.

I never played Sonic 3 & Knuckles.I only played sonic 3 in my childhood,and for me this theme is perfect for a last level theme.Not even close to Death egg Zone however...
Yeah this is better to me. Only the super theme, competition music, and carnival night act 2 are better in proto to me. The final kicks it's ass imo. It's just too badass, funky, and iconic.

MJ was my favorite MJ next to Michael Jordan growing up. Sonic series was my favorite and never knew until recently (2013) that MJ did LOTS of the Sonic 3 tracks. God truly does create miracles and I'm glad I was able to enjoy one of the many He has provided.
Michael Jackson did one track (the credits). The rest (ICZ, CNZ, LBZ, misc) was done by Brad Buxer specifically. They're potentially still owned by MJ's estate though as he did the work under MJ's agreement with Sega. MJ did one session of work before leaving, per Buxer.
I know I'm grave digging here, but I just heard "I Can't Wait" at Walgreens and it reminded me of Sonic. Took me a while but finally remembered that it's basically Launch Base Zone. Feels great to be a Sega nerd! :)

Unless you're playing 3&K, in which case it's saying, "Go! Can you stop the Death Egg in time?" You ultimately don't, but it gets you pumped and ready for the second part of the game in which you destroy it once and for all!
Haha! Well, the Death Egg did crash. Sonic and Tails simply land on Angel Island and need to find its crash site. I would say that the flow is all right, although it could have been better.
Dunno, though this is probably one of if not my favorite soundtrack, flying battery act 1, Icecap act 1, hydrocity act 2, sandopolis act 1 and a few more are better to me. I love this one to death though.
This track gives me major Sonic CD US soundtrack vibes. The beginning sounds like Wacky Workbench Present (where only bass and percussion plays only until the rest of the instruments drop) and so do the guitars. The trumpets in the middle of the song have an atmospheric vibe (that a lot of US tracks have), the percussion sounds as if Brad Kaiser and Armando Peraza made it together and the vocals heavily remind me of the simple female vocals from the US OST. I know Sonic 3's OST wasn't made by them, but it still gives me vibes of it.
Remember playing this as a kid back in the 90's and the playground rumour was that was Knuckles providing the backing 'Go, Go, Go' verses. Funny times man.
