Not really. It's likely that the HD intro was fully animated before the game was even done. They just probably had to pick and choose which scenes they could port down to the Sega CD. All they had to do was remove several scenes and gradually slow the clip's frame rate until it more or less matched the length of the song.

funny you mentioned that, when the OVA was made back in '96, it was intended to be a 2-part pilot episode for a Sonic anime, unfortunately as you could probably tell nowadays, the idea fell through so when they got around to dubbing and localizing the OVA for western audiences in 1999, they took the two parts of the OVA, combined it into 1 episode and called it the Sonic the Hedgehog movie
The smooth FULL scaling of the bonus stage on the new version is what it SHOULD have looked like on the Mega-CD. They screwed up and rushed that part of the game and did not use the hardware fully. The game should have been full of cool scaling and rotational effects but sadly, as with anything not made by CORE, the incredibly powerful ASCI chip was ignored as always. Nobody knew back then just how much better the M-CDs sprite handling chip was in comparison to the SFC's Mode 7. Mode 7 could manipulate only one background or one sprite at a time. The M-CD had full, arcade quality scaling and rotation of all sprites as seen in CORE's games and Batman Returns for instance.

Technically there is actually 4 versions. Original mega CD/sega CD version Windows 95 version Sonic Gems collection version (which is based on the Windows 95 version with a few changes) And the 2011 versions. As for soundtracks For Windows 95 version all regions have the US soundtrack For sonic gems collection only the japanese version has JP/EU soundtrack, the europe version has US soundtrack 2011 versions have both soundtracks.

I never noticed this before, but all of the foreground parallax is background parallax. I.E.the glowing quartz crystals are not in the foreground on the HD remake. I wonder why that is?
It's a misconception that mp3 is inferior to CD. It depends on the birate of mp3. At 128 it's noticable only if you have incredibly sophisticated mp3 equipment. At 192 it is technically inferior but the human ear is not capable of distinguishing the difference.
The D.A. Garden comparison is a bit off. You didn't showed the night and dawn/dusk of the Mega CD versions, and actually the night and dawn/dusk look better on the Mega CD version than on the 2011 version.
Supposedly two different composers made a soundtrack for the game not knowing that the other was working on it. So to not waste a perfectly good soundtrack they stuck it on the US release.
The main problem with all these SonicCD reeditions, re-makes (the Android one), and re-releases, is the fact most of them, if not all, seem to be based on the PC port of the game released three years after the original SegaCD game and, just like with Sonic DX and Adventure, or SA2 Battle and the original Adventure 2 game, I feel that while the PC port improved visually, it just didn't feel the same as before. I feel all remakes should have been based on the original SegaCD version.
Umm... i recently got Sonic CD for the Mega CD and i can say that it if you play the game through RGB looks million times better then both shown in the video.
It is painfully obvious that this was composite video captured. It's not a side by side thing either - you can tell by the numbers in the top left being all fuzzy. RGB Scart looks much better

HD version looks like a more cleaner look. that being said the Sega CD was pretty good for a 16 bit console. i mean they even included video, even if it was a rectangle.
I had original CD release on PC for some time but I bought game on steam again to support sales since game is really good, and to be able to do Let's Play on RU-vid since neither FRAPS or DXtory don't want to record original CD release on PC. If you are not a Let's Player, then It's really not needed to buy Steam version. The Original CD release on PC pretty much had all that is needed. And with custom editing you could replace soundtrack if you preffered japanese. Overall I like both OST
The Mega/Sega CD version is the only version that is downloadable for free since Mega/Sega CD games are more outdated. You'll have to purchase consoles, such as PS3 or Xbox 360, in order to download the new version, which is only available to pay in console shops.
I'm glad to go back to the past with the older sonic games.. but being spoiled by generations, I'd like to see most of the older sonic levels, redone with the 3d affects, much like how they did green hill and the chemical plant level from sonic 2. I'd pay for DLC. I'd love to see levels from sonic cd, s.t.h & k.t.e, etc. That'd be my dream come true.. and then they should make a 3rd addition to the Sonic Adventure series... I'd be happy.
if I was in Sega I would make the mania collection which is sonic+beta,sonic 2+beta, sonic 3 and knuckles+ the two betas, sonic cd+ beta, and sonic mania... +beta
well they can do it for sonic 1 and made sonic 3 and knuckle, but sonic 3, sonic 2, and sonic and knuckle are in marketplace they are not completely HD and widescreen so it looks so weird :(
as a kid I always wanted CD but never knew what system it was on at that time I owned Sonic Mega Collection on the GameCube which had a bunch of extras and I saw the Sonic Boom cutscene and it looked amazing it was many years later that I found it on the app store
Well... They did made sonic CD to steam as remake and they did put that intro from classic version but it did got one bonus from mobile version! If you buy sonic CD or already have it you get a metal sonic costume for spiral Knights! It's just promo cuz sega published spiral Knights but been developed by three rings witch are now called grey haven cuz they don't want sega put too much promotions and nearly no updates for spiral Knights
It was more or less the fact that they don't own the song, and you really can't sell a game for 5 bucks if you spent money to try and put the song back in.
Its actually the Windows 95 version (1996) that does that. The Windows 95 version of Sonic CD uses the US soundtrack on pretty much every release, including the JP and EU releases
