Sonic Frontiers may be a hit or miss for some, but that’s why it’s important everyone critiques the game as much as possible. That way, Sonic Team can keep building on the great aspects of Frontiers, and remove what was bad.
I mean you can see elements and ideas from Sonic Forces executed much better in Frontiers. Most notably the darker story, the shorter levels, the collectibles have meaning now, the boost is no longer as overbearing as it was in Forces, boss fights are much better, the main villain My only concern is that Sonic Team chucks everything in the bin after this and goes and does something completely different which no one asked for (see: Sonic Heroes and Sonic Lost World).
And imo most of the bad is really the game seeming like it's being HELD back by it's own potential which is a GOOD sign for constructive criticism into making a better sequel
So automation is okay when another automated level or gameplay section is nearby because there is so much of it? That’s like saying tik tok is good because these individual videos are kinda spat out just for clicks, but there’s another video if you just swipe up so you’ll just forget about it the dog shit you just watched so it’s okay because you’ll be entertained and get instant dopamine. What?
As someone who played the game, I'm 100% with you! Fantastic step in the right direction. I really hope they take the right criticism from this game and truly elevate the experience by making the needed adjustments accordingly. My main fear is that if this game doesn't end up at least going green on Metacritic that Sega scraps this all entirely
Same honestly. I still need to play the game but as someone who watched all the cutscenes, the games story is amazing, and I’m scared that if metacritic doesn’t go green, that they’ll chuck out every concept that the game introduced.
Fan reception on Metacritic is pretty much universally positive though. I wanna say that Sega would recognise that and keep the direction… but I’ve been a Pokemon fan for too long to put any faith in a company’s higher-ups.
It’s one of those games that have me thinking, “wasn’t I supposed to advance the plot?” •continues to blindly explore and complete the map and gather stuff•
I’m glad I got to watch this review! I really wanted this game to feel like the Adventure and Dark Age games, so I’m feeling really good about Frontiers! It really looks like Sonic is back for real this time and I’m so happy, I feel like I could cry tears of joy!
Honestly this is the best sonic game I’ve played in over 10 years. It’s actually fun to play! I really hope they keep with this idea. I feel this game finally brings back honor to Sonics name.
sonic team: makes an extremely unfinished, husk of a game with a terrible story and weird deviant art OCS *backlash intensifies* sonic team again: okay so what if we just do the exact opposite of that?
Sonic Team: makes another extremely unfinished, husk of a game with a terrible story, but no OCs this time Also Sonic Team: I'm pretty sure that was the problem.
Naoki Yoshida to the FFXIV team when making A Realm Reborn: "Hey everyone. Remember how you made version 1.0 frustrating and boring? Do the opposite of that"! Everyone: "OK boss".
Sonic frontiers imo is " step in the right direction" it might not be the greatest but it's definitely good. And here's hoping Sega learn from the flaws frontiers has and the next game is of same or hopefully even better quality.
I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I'm glad everyone is sharing their thoughts, but it's overwhelming with all the reviews being released. Thank you for not spoiling anything. That goes a long way for someone like me. I will be picking this game up, but I'm having to wait until Christmas to get the game, so it'll be hard for me to avoid spoilers. It's good to see someone like you speak positively about this game. I can't stop thanking you for not shoving spoilers in my face. You also explained the game really well, and didn't spoil anything. Thank you, Matt! ❤️
wow, i'm surprised to see you giving the most glowing review i've seen so far! as far as i could tell you were the most skeptical person i've seen haha. really glad to hear you liked it, i was a bit worried. i know it's silly to be worried about other people's reviews, but really i just wanted people to enjoy it and it makes me happy to know people are! have a great week dude
How we had to accept Tails being able to make a fake emerald with identical power to a real one. How Gerald re-programmed Shadow after he was detained in a cell and Shadow was under lockdown
It’s that Ian Flynn seasoning bro, it makes any Sonic branded dish taste a bit better. This is the best Sonic plot since before Pontac and Griff were hired to write Sonic Colors’ plot.
I did took me more than 30 mostly because I like runing around for the feel of speed and bouncing of because I have all control style up and fighting bosses just because I like to style on them even do I have enough gears
The game is amazing, in my opinion! A step in the right direction. Great open zone gameplay, story, combat, and the characters are finally good again! I know Cyberspace isn't integral to the game, but I wish there was more variety. C'MON SEGA! GIVE ME MY DAMN RAINY ROOFTOP RUN ZONE! Eh... that's what modders are for. And I haven't played it, so...
You already played it? Well im happy most critics agree this game is at least a 7. This game looks very flawed in areas like the art direction and pop-up and cyberspace. But i bet i could still have fun with this even if it isnt near goty. Also i like that this is the first game since unleashed to have genuinely good story and writing.
Developers really rely on the honeymoon phase these days. Make the first play through really good and replaying it is hell. Not saying this is the case here but it’s definitely going on with other games these days
You're serious? The prophecy wasn't a lie?! Oh _hallelujah,_ the series finally puts out the quality I always knew it could but rarely ever did! Assuming I feel the same sentiment you obviously did, but "Collectathon lover with Unleashed as favorite Sonic" describes me just as much as you, so I'm feeling hopeful!
I mean I’d say the fact this game even gave you a honeymoon phase says something. Forces immediately showed itself to be mid at best, there was no honeymoon phase
With Sonic Frontier came out, here's my list of top 10 Sonic Game: 1.) Sonic Adventure 2 2.) Sonic Adventure 3.) Sonic 3& Knuckles 4.) Sonic Mania 5.) Sonic Frontiers 6.) Sonic Unleashed 7.) Sonic Generation 8.) Sonic Advance Trillogy 9.) Sonic Rush 10.) Sonic Riders
Really fun 7/10 game which is a really good starting point for a new era of sonic, Im so happy to see the characters be themselves again, and it feels great that this game introduces a feeling of continuity to the series, I really enjoyed the new writing even if the actual story was very weak. I feel like Ian Flynn didnt have full control of the plot which is a shame, I hope next time he gets full control. Also I really hope the next game takes this gameplay style and improves it, I feel like there are two main things which the next game could improve: 1. Make the open world and its challenges use the terrain more rather than floating stage elements, it could really help fix the pop-in issue and would make the open zones feel more interesting visually. 2. Nerf Sonic's combat abilities and make more interesting enemy encounters. The combat is really fun, I enjoy that its focus is landing as many hits as possible to fill up the phantom rush gauge, however I feel like the combat mechanics are betrayed by how weak the enemies are and how strong sonic is, he has a bunch of overpowered moves and his parry can be held (Lmao why even dodge??? when you can just insta-kill enemies when they hit your guard) Also While I love the enemy types and bosses, there's not enough encounter variety , you always fight either one special enemy which wouldn't work in a group, or four regular soldiers. They should make more enemy types which can work in groups so that each combat encounter can feel more a little different. While I prefer Frontiers' combat over Unleashed's combat BUT Unleashed had way better enemy variety and those enemies could work in a group (E.g. regular enemies, shield robots, the mini-bosses, the little guys) I do really hope the next game improves on sonic frontiers because it could truly be a masterpiece if it improves what works and fixes what doesnt work
I really just have to say thank you. When I watched one of your videos for the first time that brought be back into the sonic community and I'm so excited for Frontiers. I am happy the wait is over and this game will hopefully receive positive feedback❤
I actually disagree with you, but in a very positive way. My favorite game was Sonic 3k, but this game just as you described, was the first time I played a Sonic game since that meant something when the credits finally rolled. There were even callbacks to lore from Sonic 3k, which I was so pumped about. I was smiling the whole friggin time. So good. So this game isn't just for the Adventure fans... it's for all Sonic fans 100%. It captured a lot of Sonic goodness and feeling.
12:55 That city level isn't fully original. During this whole clip that showed the city level, I saw like 10 parts of the level design that was taken straight from the original City Escape from SA2
I got a tip for you in sonic forces you need to try and have fun and see the good things like sonic being the best game play ok I promise this will help
i’m listening on the cyberspace part and yes it is true because the controls on it feels pretty bad and delayed but i still love the levels and i pretty much aced and got a S on every level only problem is the controls
@@shitanotosaurus i mean most people who played it said the same thing. hell we can see it with our own eyes from watching most of the gameplay. but i do feel like this is a good starting point and has a lot of potential
im honestly not a huge sonic fan these.i just still watch you because idk your vids are interesting and ive bee naround since the mcjuggernuggets days lol. I may try this game out though
The juxtaposition between an indivisual who has a strong liking towards the sonic series vs one who is more of an average consumer is striking. As someone who is somewhat in the middle of those two categories, I believe it will be interesting to see how the first impressions of this game unfold. From my viewpoint, it seems as if this game is heavily tailord towards one who knows all the lore and backstory behind events of past games, but I don't believe Sega is taking account the general consumers view as they would have no context to most of the story and past game references. I have a friend who is a sonic fan and game they love the game, but I also have another friend who is more of a "casual gamer" who found the game quite boring and weird. The reviews will be a mixed bag that's for sure.
Then again, they tried appealing to the "casual crowd" for a very long time, and it just never worked. Perhaps they realized that the OK from us longtime fans has become essential to the casuals even thinking of trying it?
@@ShadwSonic exactly, we had a decade of games made specifically for the casual audience. If they don't wanna take the time to even look up a quick lore video then that's on them. Not every game needs to be a fresh start for these characters 🤣
Quick tip for the cyberspace: think of the dash (boost) as diagonally up instead of a precise straight line. As if together with a generation boost every time you activate it, there's also an automatic jump included. So when you are perfectly aligned to a floating ring, there's the risk you might pass on top of it instead of inside. You have to get a bit used to this new thing, which is pretty comfortable if used properly! The game is a 9/10 even for me... I'm speechless about everything. Just WOW. Playing hours upon hours and feeling proud and on the moon 🥰
I'm glad its doing ok critic wise. Like you i just got through the 2nd island and its a hard 9/10 for me. The gameplay loop does get a little repetitve, i do have to take breaks every few hours for a bit bc you are doing the same thing. However, fillnig out the map doing the little platforming challenges littered around are so much fun to get the items you need. THe open zones are well designed and are huge and i enjoy the open world and stumbling upon secrets and the koko elders and cyberspace portals. Even cyberspace is better than i expected and BIG! But i dont wanna spoil anything either but yes so far there are a lot of references i have quite enjoyed. This is the best sonic story in some time. Love the game. THe titans are all awesome too. Tho Wvyren is one of the worst designed bosses ive ever seen lol but the rest are fantastic thus far. The third islands looks like the coolest so far i do like they are not copy paste islands platoform challenges aside. Excited to progress. Also regarding Cyberspce since i know all the levels are reused i like trying to figure out which levels they reuse. Theres one on the second island that stumped me and i was like ahhh Radical Highway! There we are lol.
They finally found an engine and game style that makes playing a Sonic game feel epic again! What they should do for the next game (or as DLC) is build off of this with some other playable characters with different playstyles. Multiple characters and styles could give rise to insane multiplayer shenanigans. They could even add a Forces-style character creator with the ability to customize playstyle and appearance. Mix in the IDW/Archie canon or something similar because it's the most robust and colorful of the stories and you'll have all of the best parts of Sonic in one game! They can take the cyberspace stages and make them the Special Zones that you have to raid for Chaos Emeralds. Those beautiful assets they used in the cyberspace stages could be applied to the regular world to expand it and create new zones. Above all else, Don't cheap out on it, don't slap it together like a 6-year-old with a Gundam model, listen to some of your fans and DON'T RUSH IT! I don't know who sets the timetables for creating SEGA's games but they need to sit down, shut up and let the programmers and creatives do their jobs. I have to wait for payday to get this and I haven't been this excited to play a Sonic game since the day I brought home my first Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure.
God I'm so worried that I won't enjoy this game, especially with what I've been hearing on both sides of the spectrum, positive from you, not positive from a few other places
im not a fan of collect o thons, marip odyssey i genuinely wasnt a fan of, but THIS GAME, i absolutely love it. Its so satisfying skipping through platforms dashing through fields its so fun, my only issue is no end game content, once its done... its done.
I love the new direction they’re taking all the characters, and what they might be setting up for in the future. Whether it’s an animated series (probable) or new games (less so), it’ll be great for the characters to be explored outside of just being Sonic’s friends. Spoilers: I *especially* love Eggman and Sage. It’s a new dynamic for the series to see Eggman genuinely care for someone - especially someone who cares for both him and Sonic - and I *really* hope Sage gets brought back proper so they can expand on that. Whether he keeps up pure villainy, teams up with Somic more often or drops the grudge entirely, I just think it’ll be nice to have Sage influencing him.
Whether i will like this game or not i will admit its kinda cute hearing you praising a sonic game this much. Especially a modern sonic game that came after mfing forces
I really liked this game! I have my gripes, because it isn't even remotely close to perfect... but hey! It still gave me a good experience. 7.5/10. I think the physics need tweeking, bugs need fixing, and FIX THE FREAKING CYBERSPACE PHYSICS ESPECIALLY!!!!!
Currently, as I sit in my room, I can't help but look fixated into the timer, knowing that I will be able to play it day 1. I'm soooo excited right now, I just can't wait.
I haven’t had so much fun with a Sonic game since Mania. Frontiers was really fun and enjoyable. The only thing I don’t like about the game are the Cyberspace controls
To me all they have to fix is the popins and 30 fps cutscenes. Other then that, I’m good. Glad the cyberspace levels are short and easy. Allows me to get back to open world as soon as possible. There is one that was over 3 minutes even with speed running skill so look forward to that one I guess. Haters can complain.
I mean No offense about your Cyber Space part but I've never seen someone die that much from the controls The controls aren't great but the Chemical Plant and Sky Sanctuary footage you showed looked like easy jumps You were meant to light dash those rings when you took that left path
Just found your channel and I can say as someone who hasn’t played a sonic game in 17 years, this game blew my mind and reignited my love for sonic. It’s made me want to start playing some of the more recent titles that have released. Any recommendations?
I'm almost done with the 3rd open zone and the game is dam good. I actually like the cyberspace levels and the only flaws I have with them is the 2d ones because my god the speed becomes so dam slow compared to everything else in the game. Like iv never played a 2d level in a sonic game that was this slow before and it just feels weird. I also like how the characters are written this time around and it feels like they are just having a normal conversation and i'm happy Knuckles is not just some idiot this time around.
My biggest dilemma with this game is whether I should get it for my switch so I can play on the go, or on the pc for the eventual mods that'll be added
