Second best Modern Sonic game behind Unleashed. Yeah, Unleashed is the best. It was unfairly panned on release because of the Werehog, but it is the BEST boost game mechanically hands down. The levels were super unique (day time stages were AMAZINGLY FUN) and you can tell SEGA put so much effort into making it. Sonic Frontiers is a breath of fresh air in the franchise and though it's a bit rough around the edges at times, it's something they need to build on with future Sonic titles because this new play style has potential to become absolutely awesome. Also, you mentioned Sonic's speed being an issue with 3D Sonic. This is true, but not for the reason most people think. Regardless of what people may say, speed is supposed to be EARNED in Sonic. If you play the classic games, Sonic isn't super fast right off the bat like how most modern Sonic games are like now. Mastering the stages and knowing how to play the game well was key to getting that speed in the classics. This idea is completely lost with modern games.

I disagree with your last point. Yeah you have a boost button, but if you don't use it right, you're not getting anywhere. Mastery of stages is still key, at least in the earlier boost games. Unleashed is a great example of course, as is Generations. Unless you aren't counting those then nevermind
@LookoutBroadcast
@LookoutBroadcast Год назад
@@MagillanicaLouM The boost ability itself removes a majority of the effort to obtain that speed and makes the creative mechanics for speed like spin dashing redundant. You press one button and you go from 0 - 100 instantly. Sonic Frontiers incorporates drop dashing but it's entirely redundant when you can boost, especially after figure 8 cylooping. Most of the boost games are pretty linear and boosting can plow through enemies like nothing. I love Unleashed but it's apparent that boosting to win is a legitimate statement. While things like drop dashing and spin dashing give you boosts, they are tools that need to be mastered to get that speed Sonic is known for. They don't just hand you that instant gratification of speed like modern boosting, as the speed boost from those abilities don't last very long.
@MagillanicaLouM
@MagillanicaLouM Год назад
@@LookoutBroadcast yeah but you're still getting your ass handed to you by the levels without skill. Its not the "speed as a reward" that older games had but "master the speed" is the goal of the boost games to me. Like watch any skilled video on unleashed, generations or even for Frontiers. I recommend Cyberman65, his Sonic gameplay is always cathartic
@LookoutBroadcast
@LookoutBroadcast Год назад
@@MagillanicaLouM The problem is that because most boost games are linear, it doesn't take a lot of effort and skill to get through stages quickly in general. Sonic Forces did this in the WORST way possible. The speed is supposed to be a pay off, but now it's a hand out. Sure, there's minor obstacles in boost games, but most don't require a lot of skill to get by casually. I'm saying this as someone that was speedrunning Unleashed day stages. The fact that a lot of boost game segments are automated/on rails pushes that point as well. There's not much to master, when levels are designed to spoon feed you the speed with excessive boost pads/rings, limited zone branching, etc. If you look at the gameplay for Modern and Classic Sonic, the difference in gaining speed and it's impression is significant. A casual Unleashed player will still get that speed gratification regardless of speedrun strats. Sonic 2 running demonstrates that there is a significant difference in casual speed and mastered speed.

As a huge fan of Sonic, I was skeptical about Sonic facing the modern "open whatever" trend. But seeing the game in action more, I realize that Sonic is actually the perfect franchise to go in this direction. It's still not perfect, i wouldn't even consider it a contender for my favorite 3d Sonic game, there's a lot of i guess, the vibes for lack of a better term, i love about games past that arent here but that's something that's a personal priority to me when it comes to games. However, I'm not opposed to the gameplay direction Frontiers will bring like i have been with something like breath of the wild for zelda. It probably helps 3d Sonic games experiment so much long before this lol. And of course, i enjoy the writing Ian Flynn has brought from his comic endeavours, truly helping the characters, even as someone who was never super mad at the direction the writers for the last few games have gone in. But his love for the series is much more apparent.

I appreciate the video but I hated the game, couldn't force myself to play past the first island. Sonic in open world ala Breath of the Wild/Shadow of Colossus didn't work for me at all. Even Sonic 06 I found more enjoyable. Favorite 3D sonic game is still Adventure 1
@retromuel
@retromuel Год назад
I really like adventure 1 but it's extremely buggy. You clip right through course quite frequently. It got by on its amazing sense of speed and 3d graphics which were amazing at the time. The story and the atmosphere are very cool too. It hasn't aged well though. None of the "fast" 3D Sonic games really work properly, for my money. I'm not massively keen on the tone and atmosphere of this new one, but it's mechanically pretty solid and they have the opportunity to make a great Sonic game with it (I'm not saying they will). Thanks for watching and engaging.

@@retromuel for me the music is the most important part of Sonic games really and Adventure 1 has the best soundtrack by far, imo. So if Frontiers had great music I could even love it but the music is generic modern trash, sorry. The overworld theme is boring piano tune, at least one first island which I've played. The cyber stages are modern soulless pop beats. The metal ones are too metal with no melody whatsoever. The music doesn't have soul
@retromuel
@retromuel Год назад
@@alex.starostin Yeah I agree on the music. Well I wouldn't say it was trash but it's not what I personally want in a Sonic game. What I want is a "proper" Sonic game in terms of the music and the positive vibes, with similar mechanics to this one. A free roaming Sonic was the dream for many of us, back in the Mega drive/Saturn days, and we pretty much have the tech to realise it now. The intro to Sonic CD is basically what I want to play. Haha.

As a bias note I despise Zelda and Mario since forever and still to this day, and I am coming from the second Sonic generation, the one that grew up with the Dreamcast. Now you guys all seem to have given up on Sonic at this point to enjoy this sketchy failed attempt of a game, even SEGA themselves called it a " Global Playtest ". I suspect all of you to have become so desperate for a satisfying Sonic game that you are starting to really lower your standards as a long term redemption of yourselves. The thing is slow, its aesthetics has never been this much boring (Bosses are okay), the gameplay itself is a shameless copy of Zelda games being itself a copy of FromSoftware's. Even today's Pokémon games are being scoffed at for the same reasons as Sonic does today. Sonic does no suffer from a bad transition to the 3D world because both "Adventure" games were good, but instead Sonic suffers from a bad sub-genre conversion as it is trying to leave the platformer genre to dwelve in this lifeless japanese Action-RPG trend. We can sum it up that Sonic is even more in an identical crisis now that it was before this game came out. Should Sonic really follow the Zelda/FromSoftware trend while it also tries to remain a platformer in its essence ? As one wise man said : "If you try to please everyone you'll please no one." This starts a true debate on what is the essence of Sonic, this thing was first built and designed to compete against Mario in the platformer sub-genre not by becoming a Mario knockoff with a blue Hedgehog as a character but by pushing this genre to its limit thanks to speed and technical advancements. In here Sonic does nothing to the Action-RPG genre other than crawling behind already mediocre japanese games with no ambitions but at least From Software games are artistically appealing. Is the platformer era dead ? Should Sonic follow any trend that passes by ? Are fans SEGA's (Sammy) guinea pig volunteers ? Should any game in existence be an open world ?

For the fact that Sonic now does speak too much, this seems to be a cultural clash between us the europeans and the american audience who are still the biggest market. However, we are old enough to remember a time when americans still enjoyed and produced wiser content like Halo before it was handed over to 343 industries.
@retromuel
@retromuel Год назад
Why do you despise Mario and Zelda, out of interest?
@SP95
@SP95 Год назад
My first Mario was Super Mario Land, so it was pretty close to Super Mario Bros and I didn't have much gaming experience previously so I can't be biased, I think I even havn't played a Sonic game before that. It is unessesarly difficult, musics are annoying, the gameplay is poor and became quickly boring. Then the other marios that came after that, even the N64 one tired me out as it was too slow and artistically poor, and I felt already too old to appreciate whatever came next on the Gamecube & such. As for Zelda, ironically I got my hands first on Ocarina of time and once again I found it slow, uninspired, unessesarly long... Then, years later aside from its cute art style the game itself bores me out as I hate looting, grinding, and empty open worlds since forever and I can't say this has changed overtime for Zelda games, it drives me nuts to witness the masses enjoying these kind of game mechanics still today with FromSoftware games, this looks like putrid masochism to me. Oh the other hand my first encounter with Sonic was on the Dreamcast and I only got to play the Megadrive ones later, the pace of Sonic and the progression itself, its art style, and the variety of platforms and decors you run into throughout the games alongside with a more balanced difficulty is what made me enjoy all the Sonic games until Adventure 2, as I am not a Sonic fan I never kept an eye on the games that came after that, however i was able to catch up overtime. Sonic already tried to become a fighting game and does well in the olympic crossovers so yes Sega could afford throwing Sonic into a new sub-genre but Frontiers is a shameless late arrival from a company that officially doesn't even know what to do with their mascot anymore.
