S2HD shows what a real HD remaster needs to look like. New and smoothed out animations, beautiful soundtrack and gameplay that almost perfectly emulates that of the original genesis/md games. Massive props to the S2HD team.

sonic 1 had actually had at least one complete act and art, in my opinion sonic 3 hd doesn’t have all that good of art and is left not even with a finished act technically, or a finished sonic.

I feel that S2HD should be called Sonic 2 Remastered instead, as it breathes new life into an old game. It's not just the original game but not pixelated like S1HD and S3HD - it's new. With new animations, new scenery, new music remixes and the works. I wish SEGA actually picked this up - but only time will tell.

I believe there's a difference between remaster and remake. For a musical example, think of Mario Kart 7 and 8. 7 remastered retro course music, well 8 remade them. The former used the same instruments as the original track, well the remake used entirely new ones and would sometimes change the melody, beat or both slightly from the original. In the case of the Sonic HD games, I want to say they're remasters.

@@Medachod I would say S2HD is a remake. If it was a remaster, it would be more like Christian Whitehead's mobile version of Sonic 2, simply increasing the resolution and aspect ratio with a few tweaks to the physics and interface.

It's a remake, not a remaster. A remake is when you recreate a game from the ground up, often using an entirely different engine and new models and assets, while a remaster is when you port an old game to newer consoles with improved graphics, gameplay, and such.

It's such a shame to me that Sonic 3 HD was the worst of these, seeing as I like Sonic 3 more than 1 or 2. The HD artwork was okay, but not my favorite. Didn't care for the music. Bugs, untouched textures and spritework, and missing animations made me wanna pull my hair out. I would love to see something better, though of course I talk big seeing as I can't do any better myself. Sonic 2 HD, on the other hand. WOW. The graphics are absolutely gorgeous, I love the redone music and the remixed Act 2 music, the continuity between acts is awesome (I'd love to see continuity between zones as well a la Sonic 3/Mania), and the animations. My God, the animations. The new running and falling animations, the background animations, the shading in caves. And Robotnik's defeat animation in Chemical Plant actually made me SQUEE. There is so much love put into this remaster. I'm glad this is the one that's still being worked on, and I cannot wait to see it when it's finished. Sonic 1 HD was okay. Not much to say.

1 and 3 HD are very lacking in comparison to 2 HD, for 3 the swinging animation is a pixelated sprite instead of the normal model, and nothing really meshes together

As someone with a much stronger bias for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, I am glad its team not only did the most faithful remaster, as well as knowing what the definition of the word is, but went on to create a new Sonic game themselves for SEGA. My favorite of the trilogy with the best team made a Sonic game for me. I felt incredibly privileged.

The sonic 1 and 3 remake is alright, i guess, but it can't compare to sonic 2 hd. Something about the graphics of sonic 1 feel a little off too me.

I think that's because it looks like all they did was put smoothing on the OG game and make the music slightly worse. It makes it look like a flash game.

It’s pretty impressive that they got Tee Lopes to do the music for them like Emerald Hill Zone. He did the music for Sonic Mania which is officially by Sega where Sonic 2 HD is not. Maybe Sega saw the Sonic 2 HD fan game first and that’s how they found Lopes for Mania.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles: But they were first released for high quality PC's. Also, I'm more a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD than Sonic the Hedgehog HD, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles HD.

Well, Sonic 1 HD and Sonic 3K HD onoy updated the base graphics and music. Still the relatively same screen resolution, and not much to do in them. Sonic 2 HD has a much wider screen ratio, smoother and more diversified animations,(hi speed sprint, grabed by grabber, level clear) ques from Sonic 3 such as zone transitions and act 2 separate tracks, and other various quality of life changes. All within a 3 FULL ZONE demo. (Rather than just 1 level)
