Sonic Origins Plus is Still Not Great 

Apparently there are now 3 jump buttons. So that's nice. Doesn't change my overall verdict on the game. But it's something.

It's so weird that after 20 years Mega Collection Plus is still the best Sonic collection.

Classic Sega. One step forward and a variety of steps backward.

I feel like Tails and Knuckles are both such essential Sonic characters in the way that they expand the nature of the game and its traversal with their abilities. They fundamentally change how you spacially interact with the level design, and in many ways Advance Amy does this as well. She's in some ways restricting you and forcing you to contend with the level design at a more close-up proximity, and her very idioyncratic playstyle still yields benefits as well. Her "powers" being built around the ability to use a tool is so cool and she is basically an android.

This should have been a free update

What's going on with the Game Gear audio is they seem to be oscillating the left and right panning to create a fake stereo effect. If you set your system to output mono audio, it sounds mostly normal. So it's not 'bad' emulation, it's a weird/poor decision. Like some exec saying "make sure everything's in stereo!" At least there's a workaround on most systems.

This is just speculation, but when it comes to muffled music in S3&K, I bet Jun Senoue or Sega executive just refused to do anything to the music. Headcannon most likely would have suggest of using cleaner music tracks from emulated source and early pre-Michael Jackson tracks from S3 November 3rd, 1993 prototype, but he was protably ignored at that point. Some things might have been out of Stealth's reach.

The thing I dislike the most is in the physical copy the dlc is a download code which defeats the purpouse of having an all physical copy of the game. Sonic mania plus had it all in the cart or disc, while sonic origin plus its not even complete on the cart or disc which devalues the game physically since its not complete.

The worst part of Amy here is that her playstyle is ripped straight from Superstars, but even in that game she apparently has a double jump which isn't in Origins for whatever reason. "This collection is okay for casual players" Sadly, yes. This might be the reason why it's so low effort, casuals won't care about most of these issues.

It's nice that Amy is finally added in the game, but I have to agree that her move set is disappointing. It's such a missed opportunity to let her have interesting platforming but that's just what the Sonic series is all about! These people just cannot seem to take potential when they see it. Overall, this collection is just /okay/ and it just exists. I didn't feel any excitement with the update.

The really weird thing about Amy's implementation is that despite how half baked most of her mechanics are, the one bonus she has makes her OP against Robotnik. Whenever Robotnik moves to the top of the screen to make the fights last longer, not even insta-shield Sonic can hit him. But Amy can! So she's both worse and too good at the same time!

The "Amy in Sonic 1/2/3" ROMhacks use her Advance 1 moveset and it works perfectly, I really don't understand why they couldn't do it here

Well I almost completely regret getting the physical version of this game. I'm sure you already know this from online, but the discs and Switch cartridges only come with base Origins, not even updated and the "Plus" stuff has to be downloaded via a code. I already have base Origins digitally, but like basically everyone else who wanted to get the physical copy, we wanted ALL of the game, including the DLC in the disc or cartridge, like they did with Sonic Mania Plus. But instead we got unfinished base Origins where the value will go down for resale. I feel like I wasted my money cause I could've just bought the Plus DLC for $10 digitally and saved $30. The only thing I don't regret getting the physical copy for is the art book. It's pretty neat, but that's it. The ones who made the decisions for this game are pretty scummy.

Okay, so uh, they didn't even NEED to develop a Master System Emulator The Genesis was alredy backwards compatible with the Master System (the only thing that stopped you from playing the master system games right out of the box was the Cartridge Slot), so they could've just... Used a Genesis Emulator.

You missed a few of Amy moves mate, the hammer run can help climb steep slopes, destroying spiked enemies without taking a hit (most of the time lol), I think using the hammer jump helps you land on ledges you might have missed with other characters, and also the Hyper Hammer Toss is cool as f**k!

This collection doesn't even have multiple save files. Like Sega are you kidding me? This is one of the most basic features. (İ know that Sonic cd and 3&k has multiple save files but they are built in the game but if you play Sonic 1 and 2 when you finish your game as Sonic if you want to play it again as Sonic you have to delete your file.)

I still refuse to play this game. I had Hyper Sonic, I was in Lava Reef, I went to pick up a giant ring to get 50 rings, instead it sends me to the first ever special stage, I complete it and now the game thinks I have only one chaos emerald and can't turn super or hyper. Fuck this game

We really just waited a whole year for Amy, Knuckles in CD, and a bunch of mediocre Game Gear games, take a moment to think about that because all of that should’ve been in the base game from Day 1 No Spinball or Mean Bean Machine in 16 bit is disgraceful when Mega Collection had those many years ago and even 3D Blast which is still enjoyable in its own way.

The physics system can be altered, using the stage select screen at the title of whichever game, it includes the option to re enable the ground and air speed caps so for example the opening segment in marble garden zone would be fixed if you went to the stage select and changed those options, HOWEVER you cannot save your progress after you activate level select which is silly. i noticed after completing the checklist that sonic origins plus gives you to test out the new features, they give you extra tutorials on how to access the stage select. as a bonus, idk if it was in the og release of origins but in the stage select of sonic 1 you can enable 7 emeralds and go super

The fact they didn't fix the blur annoys me the most. Thats the only thing I have to use mods for and installing the modloader on the steam deck / linux is just a pain in the ass.

I was so hopeful that they would fix the issues in the base game after they announced Headcannon would be returning to work on the DLC, shame it turned out like this. I still went ahead and bought the game anyways because I really wanted to be able to play Sonic 3 on my Switch. Guess I'm part of the problem, then.

Also it’s been found out that the new models used for Amy and knuckles are taken from a Twitter artist without credit which is even more bizarre

Sonic Frontiers: New content, quality of life changes, and overall improvements to the gameplay = FREE Sonic Origins Plus: Knuckles in CD, playable Amy, and Game Gear games = $40 Make it make sense Sega.

The fan projects Forever, Absolute, and A.I.R. Are leagues better, even if there are little pluses on Origin's behalf.

They actually have rereleased the Master System versions on the Wii Virtual Console before so I don’t see why they couldn’t have just reused that emulator.

My issue with Origins Plus is that Sonic The Fighters, Sonic 3D Blast, and Knuckles Chaotix, (yes I know it’s reputation & it’s missing source files, but still), are missing from this collection.

I think the Game Gear audio is attempting to produce a fake Stereo sound effect, but instead it sounds like some genuinely bad output. But man, it really angers me how poorly handled this collection still is and that they're asking $10.99 just for me to "complete it".

So glad they fixed the roll-lock, that was actually my biggest nitpick with Sonic Origins and now it is fixed so good job Sonic Team! Edit: My next biggest nitpick is that Sonic CD doesn’t play the audio files of the characters speaking, for example Sonic saying “Yeah!” After getting an extra life and Amy squealing when Metal Sonic kidnaps her. I presume Sega did this because apparently Classic Sonic doesn’t talk but of course he talks! He has always been able to talk, generations couldn’t get a voice actor for Classic Sonic so now Sega is getting rid of any slight bit of dialogue Classic Sonic had. You can’t rewrite history, Sega. Edit 2: I don’t really count not including the MJ songs as a nitpick because 1. It is too major to be considered a nitpick 2. It would be a really big legal battle just to get really good songs back that the average customer wouldn’t even notice the change

But Sonic Origins Plus has the best Sonic game, Sonic Blast!

As soon as we knew that the Game Gear versions were being used over the Master System ones, I immediately lost interest. Sonic 2 MS is already a super difficult game, but the screen crunch of the GG version makes it borderline unplayable. I really don’t think they cared if they only released that version with no changes.

The "echo effect" on the GG games seems to be a fake stereo effect - run it thru a mono speaker and it'll sound absolutely fine. It's baffling because the Game Gear naturally has real stereo support! Seriously, I've played Sonic 2 on my real GG, and the sounds with echo effects (collecting rings, losing rings, breaking blocks...) actually pan the echo between the two speakers! And again, this is a real Game Gear I'm talking about!

The Game Gear Games also is in a 1:1 perfect Pixel Ratio but the Game Gear System itself has a 4:3 Stretch. With the GG Games being designed for that stretch. That's why Game Gear Sonic looks so thin. The only rerelease with the proper 4:3 stretch is Sonic Adventure DX Also, there was ONE Master System Release for Sonic 1, 2, & Chaos. That being the *Wii Virtual Console*

I still feel that the collection is not finished, I still want more games to be added (Knuckles and the Chaotix) and to be unique collection I think making Eggman and Metal Sonic playable and see the story from the villains prespective and that's just what I want on a surface level but yeah I hope there's more updates to the collection

I have to admit their are still problems with the games not being as good as the 2012 mobile ports. CD is missing sonics voice and the oh cutscenes for CD are desynced

Honestly, if I were to make an origins collection, I would include the original genesis roms on top of the remasters. Base sonic 3, base sonic and knuckles, and blue sphere included. With the ability to change music and sound effects between base sonic 3 or sonic 3 and knuckles. Ray and Mighty should've been playable in every game too. For other games I would include 3D Blast, Knuckles Chaotix, Ristar, Flicky, and Segasonic the hedgehog. (MAYBE Sonic the fighters and Sonic R too) Even with origins plus out now, none of these came true. And they didn't even include the infinitely better master system versions of the game gear games.

At this point, they should've juet ported mega collection plus and add gems collection with it and call it a day, wouldve been leagues better than this crap

It baffles me that after so many years of sucking off Classic Sonic, Sonic Team would allow a shoddy collection like this, and given the opportunity to fix it all, they instead add paid DLC. And between the high points of Frontiers and Superstars coming later this year, this sticks out like the sorest thumb.

They didn't add any new missions for Amy, they didn't give her any new level paths, her moveset is a cheap knock off of Sonic's. It's like Sega was announcing to the fanbase that they can be as lazy as they want and people will still buy their shit.

The GG games is such a strange inclusion...would have made alot more sense to approach the team that remade sonic 1 & 2 sms and the guy that remade sonic 3d blast and include those. Akin to how they approached Stealth for the genesis remakes & mania.

You probably should have experimented with Amy more. She has alot of unique properties to her Amy Rush and even the Air Hammer that remind me of the ways they made Mighty feel unique when you play as him in Mania by giving him alot of unique stage interactions for his shell and stomp. In Sonic 1, 2, and CD (But not 3 for some reason) you can use her Amy Rush off of a platform and then change direction in midair as long as you don't collide with anything. this is extremely useful in stages like Wacky Workbench to do things that even Knuckles and Tails can't do while maintaining a solid pace, but she lacks some of the speed potential the Drop Dash gives Sonic. Amy Rush isn't effected by slopes in any game and can let you scale sheer slopes, but you have to release it to go through loops. It doesn't build speed like the drop dash does, but it does offer you a very solid level of control that lets Amy do things none of the other characters really can do. Her Hammer also has a few unique interactions like Mighty's Stomp did. It can break walls (as can Amy Rush) with the exception of a few of the Knuckles Route walls. This, combined with how her Amy Rush interacts on slopes, allows Amy to rip Marble Garden Zone apart and do things none of the other characters can do in that stage. Additionally, if she hits the Spinners in that stage with her Air Hammer, it instantly activates them, allowing Amy to maintain her speed in this stage in ways that allow her to pull ahead of any of the other characters if Super Forms aren't being used. Also, using Sonic 1 level select to turn off the spindash also disables Amy Rush for that game but NOT the Air Hammer. Turning on the Sega CD Spindash in CD doesn't effect her Amy Rush in that game, however. There's alot more to the character than what you can see in under 2 hours. (Also, there's a Sound Test code for Sonic 3 to turn on Sonic's Peel Out)

The only thing they really fixed in S3&K is the launch base transition Which I mean while that’s good The physics, music and the most annoying bug in my opinion, the hidden palace soft lock Are still there and is just sad… it’s been a year since the original release

The Game Gear audio emulation itself isn’t bad, it’s the pseudo-stereo effect they’re using. If you force the audio output to mono, it sounds fine. Using the Game Gear versions at all is a crime though. Hackers over at SMS Power! have even converted Triple Trouble (and many other GG titles) to not only run on a Master System, but even take advantage of the console’s higher screen resolution. Sega just doesn’t care.

8:33 I never get this when it comes to a sonic collections. They always use the Gamegear versions when the Master System versions are right there.

I'm glad someone said that Amy's addition wasn't that impressive, honestly. I don't hate that Amy is in the game, but then she feels like a Sonic Clone with less to her base moveset since she lacks the Barriers Sonic has in place of her Hammer techniques which actually could have benefitted from a bigger hit box that was like a ring around her or if you hit an enemy with it in midair, it gave you some extra vertical height like Sonic Advance gave with Spring Hammer hits Heck, even just giving the Hammer Jump from Advance 1 would make her more interesting a character to the environments that are these games

They’re going to remake it using the Sonic Superstars assets. I guarantee it. After Sonic Frontiers they make sprite remakes and then after Sonic Superstars they will make 3D remakes.

No MJ music in Sonic 3 : NO BUY.

Sadly, Sonic Origins is just "okay," but all I wanted was the mobile ports on console and that's what we got. I had literally one criteria, and it was met, so I'm really not complaining. I do think it would've helped if they had made the games' level select options from the mobile games accessible from the main menu. You can actually customize the physics and moveset of each game (turning the speed cap on/off, using Peel Out or Insta Shield outside of their games, adding a seventh emerald and Super Sonic to Sonic 1, etc.), but only through the level select screen, and so many people don't know this.

I have a theory on why we don't have the Master System versions of the 8-bit games. Perhaps the og code of them were tossed away? This may sound silly, but there are reports of Japanese game companies tossing away source code and even cases of similar events in other forms of media (Like Toei throwing away the audio masters for Dragon Ball, hence why all the home media releases with JP audio sound muffled and bad) as well. It's just a theory though

I remember when this game was announced on the sonic Central I was excited to at least get to play sonic 3 and knuckles on the switch. After it came out the missing music made me back out on buying it. This game just made mega collection so much more valuable

Wow, all they had to do was make Amy like Sonic Advanced or Sonic Adventure Amy and they couldn’t get that right. There’s already a Amy in Sonic 1 Hack that does it better…

I don't hear a lot of people talk about this. But am I the only one who thinks Amy's sprite just looks off? Especially in Sonic 3K.

Amy's hammer charge also lets her climb hills because it has a fixed speed that ignores resistance against it. I found some interesting ways to use it to fight back against levels that funnel you down.

What was kinda weird for me is that it didn't come with all the dlc. I got the game digitally on Switch without owning Origins beforehand, and I only got the island view (aside from Plus stuff). No 100 coins, no mirror mode, no harder challenges, nothing.

On the Game Gear matter: It's actually worse than that. Master System and Game Gear are architecturally the same system (and share a lot of emulators as a result). Not only would the Master System versions run in the same emulator that the Game Gear versions use, it would only take minimal effort for Sega to port the Game Gear exclusives TO the Master System for the purposes of this collection. The Game Gear versions were a DECISION.

As a long time sonic fan, that is, once again, as expected.

Just by putting the audio on mono, it fixes itself. For some reason they separated mono audio into to stereo channels by taking different frequencies into one and the other, for some reason…? And totally messed it up. If you reproduce it on mono, everything comes together and sounds completely normal. I don’t know who took such a garbage decision to turn mono into stereo. If you’re 100% emulating the games, and you can’t reprogram the audio sfx files to each reproduce more on a specific side of the headphones, and pan the individual voices of the music, then just keep it mono.

What was even the point of this collection if the fan-made remakes exist?

This funny because before Origins released I wanted to have all 4 classic games on my Steam Deck but without having to buy Origins and the biggest reason was the Sonic3&K OST using the prototype versions. After I downloaded the fan versions of those games, (3 AIR, 2 Absolute, 1 Forever, and CD Restored) I have to say anyone who is interested in playing the classic games to get those fan versions. Not only you have a save file for the first two like in 3 but with mods and customizable music, these versions will allow you to play these games the way you want to.

Don't forget they also used Rafaknight's amy model for the menu and refused to credit them, the topology has been proven to be the exact same. They also lied about not using them too when it's obvious they're blatantly lying.

It is certainly hard to put faith in SEGA when it comes to re-release and remakes of older Sonic games as we can see here. I mean had we ever got good remasters of the old Sonic games? (aside from the mobile release of Classic Sonic games) As it stands, the best versions to play Classic Sonic games are Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic CD Restored, Sonic 2 Absolute, and Sonic 3 Angel Island Revisited. (or Sonic 3 Complete depending on your preference) And while Amy isn't a playable character in Sonic 1 Forever, (I think) Sonic 2 Absolute, and Sonic 3 A.I.R. There are ROM hacks and mods that make Amy playable in those games. As well as Metal Sonic, Shadow, Rouge, Cream, Blaze, Ray, Mighty, Bunnie Rabbot, Sally Acorn, and many more. Hey Pariah, have you heard of Legacy of Solaris? It's a mod that fixes many Sonic 06 issues. It's still janky and P-06 is still the better experience but Legacy of Solaris offers a full Sonic 06 experience and then some.

I was a bit surprised when i saw people complaining about the way the game looks, i've always liked bilinear filters way more than sharp pixels, it's a cool artstyle but i personally hate sharp pixels, with bilinear filters you could see how artists back then created details like shading and detail on the characters without the hard pixel lines, without worring about shimmering pixels, or integer scaling, or without filling the screen with artifacts like those unconvincing crt filters a lot of collections use so i wouldn't say that this is an issue, i think they definitely should give anyone the option to have a sharp image though.

They always want to use that smoothing filter. There is already a mod that fixes that.

Origins Plus is the epitome of the phrase "I expected nothing, and I'm still let down."

The Game Gear games in Origins sound like they do because Sega bafflingly decided to have the audio be output to stereo when native Game Gear audio is mono. When you set your console/pc's auido output to mono they sound like they're supposed to. Also I suspect that the reason Sega keeps giving us the Game Gear versions of these games is because the Master System versions of the games only released in the West, and Sega, being a Japanese company, think that the Game Gear versions are the only ones that matter because they're the only version that came out over there.

This is when you start to miss the (insert X character in any 2D sonic games here) hack roms

i found another leader board manip thing with sonic 3, in sky sancturay zone when you restart the level it doesnt reset the first two bosses so you can effectively skip them

Why couldn't they get M2 to port the Game Gear/Master System stuff? They're the ones responsible for the 3DS game Gear ports, and those came out great! Better than Nintendo's own Game Buy emulations! They would have done it perfectly, they practically already did!

The best way to play these games is through the reverse engineered and fan ports on PC .sonic 1 forever,sonic 2 absolute,sonic 3 air and sonic CD decompiled also sonic 1 and 2 gamegear/mastersystem already have fanports and most of these are also available on android.

Calling it another Sonic 06 is very overzealous and taking it a little bit too far.
