So glad I was FINALLY able to cover this game for the Nintendo DS as it definitely deserves to be on the Sonic the Hedgehog playlist as I believe it is almost on par with the 16 bit Genesis games in terms of the quality of gameplay.
Sonic Rush (on Nintendo DS), comes after the Sonic Advance trilogy, once again developed by Dimps. It builds upon the Boost formula that was first introduced in Sonic Advance 2. However, the game moves away from the Genesis style and doubles down on the speed, which in my opinion was a bold yet right move as it gives Sonic Rush it's own identity.
This is my favorite Sonic game post Genesis era (except for Mania) and after playing it again, I could see why. The game is an adrenaline ride, the soundtrack is a banger and the gameplay is extremely polished. It is also more difficult than your standard Sonic game, in good and bad ways. Occasional cheap enemy placement and the excessive bottomless pits are annoying. But the bosses, one of the most consistently poorer sections in the series, are genuinely challenging and engaging encounters.
Sonic Rush follows a significantly streamlined story compared to its predecessors. It focuses on only two characters meaning two campaigns. Sonic the Hedgehog and one of my favorite newcomer characters, Blaze the Cat. I had such a great time playing this game again (except for Special Stage 7!....that stage can su.......🤣). Here is the entire playthrough in 60fps. I hope you enjoy this gem as much as I did.
